Can you still get an A+?
Only the final exam left?
Use your current course percentage, the final exam’s weight and your target to find the exam score you need. This is for a course still in progress.
First, check whether your course awards A+ and what earns it. The calculator’s preset goals stop at A, so choose Exact % and enter your syllabus’s A+ cutoff. The example below uses 97%.
Check your current average
Enter the percentage before the final. Leave the ungraded final out of that average.
Find the final’s weight
Use the percentage in your syllabus. For an exam worth 20% of the course, enter 20.
Choose Exact %
Enter your course’s A+ cutoff, such as 97. Do not select A if you need a higher A+ boundary.

From 96% to an A+: your final-exam target
You have 96% before a final worth 25%. Your course awards A+ at 97%. Here is what you need:
| Goal | Course cutoff | Final score needed |
|---|---|---|
| Keep an A | 93% | 84% |
| Reach A+ | 97% | 100% |
| Reach a 98% cutoff | 98% | 104% — above a 100% maximum |
How the calculation works
Your completed work contributes 72 points: 96 × 0.75. To reach 97, you need 25 more points. With a final worth 25%, that requires 100%: 25 ÷ 0.25.
The linked Final Grade Calculator lets you change the current grade, exam weight and goal. A result above 100% is out of reach on an exam capped at 100%, unless a published policy changes the calculation.
What percentage is an A+?
On the example scale here, A+ starts at 97%. Some courses set another cutoff or do not award A+ at all. A high percentage does not create an A+ unless the course’s grading rules allow it.
Check the rounding rule
A 96.5% becomes 97% only if your course rounds to the nearest whole percent. Without that policy, 96.5% is still below a 97% cutoff. Extra credit, curves and instructor discretion also need an explicit course rule.

How many GPA points is an A+?
There is no single GPA value for A+. These official scales show why it helps to check before putting extra study time toward the plus:
| School | Grade-point value |
|---|---|
| UC Berkeley | 4.00 — the same as A |
| Stanford — general scale | 4.30 |
| University of Iowa | 4.33 |
Does A+ raise your GPA more than A?
Suppose you have a 3.85 GPA over 60 GPA credits and add a 3-credit course. The result depends on how your school counts that A+.
| A+ point value | New course grade points | New cumulative GPA |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00 | 12.00 | 3.86 |
| 4.30 | 12.90 | 3.87 |
| 4.33 | 12.99 | 3.87 |
Use credits already included in your GPA, and add only new courses. Keep credit units consistent; do not mix semester and quarter credits without converting them.
Already received your final course grade?
Use the GPA Calculator to combine this grade with your other course grades and credits. It calculates your semester or cumulative GPA—not the percentage within this one class. If your starting GPA already includes this course, do not add it again.
How LSAC and AMCAS count an A+
For law-school applications, LSAC’s letter-grade conversion assigns A+ 4.33. For medical-school applications, AMCAS assigns both A+ and A 4.00. These are separate calculations from your college’s GPA.
Use the grade actually reported on your transcript. Do not turn a high-scoring A into an A+ yourself. A service’s conversion rules and your transcript determine how the grade is counted.

A+ grade questions
Is an A+ always a 4.33?
No. UC Berkeley assigns A+ 4.00, Stanford’s general scale assigns 4.30, and the University of Iowa assigns 4.33.
What if A+ is missing from the final calculator?
Choose Exact % and enter your course’s A+ cutoff. For a 97% cutoff, enter 97. A numerical target does not guarantee your course awards the A+ letter.
Is an A+ better than an A for GPA?
Only where the scale assigns A+ more points. At UC Berkeley, both count as 4.00. At Stanford, A+ is 4.30 and A is 4.00.
Can an unweighted GPA be above 4.0?
Yes, if the school’s scale awards more than 4.00 for A+. That is different from a high school adding honors or AP weighting. Check the scale and any overall GPA cap.
Can I reach 97% from 95% with a 20% final?
Not with a final capped at 100% under the ordinary weighted-average formula. You would need 105%; a perfect final would leave you at 96%.
