UK marks and degree classes to US GPA
UK universities mark out of 100, and 40% is the usual pass mark. The detailed table splits each class into US letters, so a 61% and a 68% come out differently; the class bands give one value per class.
| Band | UK mark | Class | US grade | By class |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 70–100%First | First | A · 4.0 | A · 4.0 |

The calculator uses the detailed table and shows the class-band GPA beside it. If you only know your degree class, pick Degree class under UK scale and enter First, 2:1, 2:2 or Third.
Note
UCL publishes its table to help students read UK marks, and says it doesn’t use it for its own admissions. US universities and credential evaluators each use their own conversion, so give the original marks when an application asks for them.
US GPA to a UK degree class
UK universities publish the US GPA they accept for each class when you apply for a master’s. The levels differ from one university to the next:
| University | First | 2:1 | 2:2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheffield | 3.7 | 3.0 | 2.7 |
| Leeds | 3.5 | 3.0 | 2.5 |
| Edinburgh | 3.67 | 3.25 | — |
| Bristol | — | 3.3 | — |
| UCL | — | 3.3 | 3.0 |
| Glasgow | — | 2.8 | 2.6 |
| Warwick | 3.7 | 3.3 | 3.0 |
| Birmingham | — | 3.2 | 2.8 |
| Nottingham | — | 3.2 | 2.8 |
| Southampton | 3.6 | 3.2 | 2.8 |
| Oxford | 3.7 | 3.5 | — |
Example
Say you have a 3.4 GPA. That meets the 2:1 level at 10 of these 11 UK universities (Oxford asks for 3.5) but not a First at any of them; Leeds sets the lowest First, at 3.5.
The US GPA → UK grade converter checks your GPA against all 11 universities and shows the class most of them give it; pick one university under Compare with to see its levels alone. Check the page of the university you apply to: some set a higher GPA for competitive courses.
How UK university marks work
Your degree class comes from your module marks, usually weighted toward the final years. The classes are:
| Band | Average mark | Class | Also written |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 70% and above | First-class honours | 1st |
| Good | 60–69% | Upper second-class honours | 2:1, 2.1 |
| Average | 50–59% | Lower second-class honours | 2:2, 2.2 |
| Low pass | 40–49% | Third-class honours | 3rd |
| Fail | Below 40% | Fail |
A full-time year is usually 120 UK credits. One UK credit is about 10 hours of study; two UK credits equal one ECTS credit (Queen Mary University of London)., split into modules of 15, 20, 30 or 40 credits.
Tip
Enter the credits exactly as your transcript shows them. You don’t need to turn them into US credits first: only the ratio between modules matters, so 20, 20 and 40 weigh the same as 1, 1 and 2.
Worked example: three modules
Say you have 72% in Literature and 65% in History (20 credits each) and 58% in a 40-credit research project. Each mark is converted first, then weighted by its credits (this is what Try a sample loads):
| Band | Module | Mark | Credits | US grade | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | Literature | 72% | 20 | A · 4.0 | 80 |
| History | 65% | 20 | A− · 3.7 | 74 | |
| Good | Research project | 58% | 40 | B · 3.0 | 120 |
| Total | 80 | 274 |
US GPA = 274 ÷ 80 = 3.425, shown as 3.43. With the class bands it is 3.38, because 65% and 58% become 3.5 and 3.0.
Myth vs fact
Myth
A 2:1 means a 2.1 GPA, and a 2:2 means a 2.2.
Fact
2:1 and 2:2 are degree classes, not decimals. A 2:1 is 60–69%, a B+ to A− on UCL’s table; a 2:2 is 50–59%, a B− to B.
A-levels and GCSEs
School qualifications aren’t on the university mark scale, so the converter doesn’t take them. US colleges read A-levels (A* to E) and GCSEs as they are, with your school report, and many ask for a credential evaluation.
For GCSEs graded 9 to 1, Ofqual set the new grades against the old letters: roughly the same share of students gets a 7 or above as got an A or above, a 4 or above lines up with a C or above, and the bottom of grade 1 matches the bottom of grade G.
Common mistake
Dividing a GCSE grade by 9 and multiplying by 4. A 7 isn’t a 3.11 GPA: it is a grade on its own scale, and colleges read it that way.
Which number to put on an application
- To a US college with UK marks: send your transcript with its marking scheme, and give a converted GPA only if the form asks for one. Some colleges want a credential evaluation instead.
- To a UK university with a US GPA: the university compares your GPA with its own level for each class. Send the transcript; a self-calculated UK class isn’t needed.
- A semester abroad in the UK: your home university decides how the marks transfer, often with its own table for that UK university.
Checklist
- Your transcript and its marking scheme (the pass mark and the class bands)
- Whether a mark is a module mark or your overall average
- Credits for every module
- The conversion the admissions office names, if it names one
Frequently asked questions
What is a 2:1 in GPA?
On UCL’s table a 2:1 (60–69%) is a B+ (3.3) for 60–64% and an A− (3.7) for 65–69%. Michigan State gives every 2:1 a 3.5. As an entry level, most UK universities ask for a US GPA of 3.0 to 3.3 for a 2:1 (Glasgow 2.8, Oxford 3.5).
What GPA is a First in the UK?
A First is 70% or more, an A (4.0) on UCL’s table. For entry, Sheffield asks for a 3.7 GPA, Edinburgh 3.67 and Leeds 3.5.
What is 65% in US GPA?
65% is an A− (3.7) on UCL’s table and a 2:1 in UK terms. Michigan State’s class bands give it 3.5.
Is a 2:2 the same as a 2.2 GPA?
No. A 2:2 is a lower second-class degree, 50–59%. On UCL’s table that is a B− (2.7) to a B (3.0); UK universities ask for a US GPA of 2.5 to 3.0 for it.
Is a 4.0 GPA a First?
On every UK table we checked, yes: a 4.0 is above the First level at Sheffield (3.7), Edinburgh (3.67) and Leeds (3.5).
