An AF is an Administrative Failure and is treated like an F for GPA calculation. CR and P do not carry grade points. W, AU, IC, IA, IX, and NR are not ordinary GPA-bearing letter grades.

How UNH calculates GPA

UNH multiplies each GPA-bearing grade value by the course’s graded semester credits. Add those grade points, then divide by the total graded credits.

GPA = total grade points ÷ total graded credits

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.00 grade points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.99. Together, that is 21.99 grade points across 6 graded credits.

Official precision matters: the UNH undergraduate catalog says GPA is calculated to two decimal places and is not rounded. The shared calculator shows three decimals for planning, so use your official UNH record when an exact reported GPA matters.

F, AF, Pass/Fail, and other non-GPA grades

A standard F counts as 0.00 grade points and its graded credits remain in the GPA denominator. AF is handled the same way.

The undergraduate Pass/Fail option is different. A P earns credit but is excluded from GPA, and an F under the Pass/Fail option is also excluded from GPA. In the calculator, choose UNH course, Pass/Fail option so that a Pass/Fail F is not mistakenly treated like an ordinary F.

CR and P are excluded from the GPA. Temporary or administrative notations such as IC, IA, IX, and NR should not be converted into invented grade points; use the final resolved grade when it becomes available.

Repeated courses at UNH

For an eligible undergraduate repeat, UNH removes the former course credits and grade points before recalculating the cumulative GPA, then adds the repeated course information. Both grades remain visible on the official transcript.

The ordinary repeat rule requires the course number and title to match exactly. If they do not, approval through the academic-advising and college process is required. Both the original and repeated courses must be UNH courses, and the Pass/Fail option cannot be used to repeat a course.

Calculator limitation: the Repeat Impact tool is an estimate for a straightforward eligible two-attempt repeat. It does not decide whether a course qualifies for repeat treatment or whether a petition will be approved.

Do transfer grades count in the UNH GPA?

No. Approved external transfer credit can count toward degree requirements, but the transfer grade is not calculated into the UNH GPA. Transfer work also cannot be used under the UNH repeated-course rule.

For current undergraduate transfer-credit evaluation, UNH generally requires at least C- under the current policy, with policy-period details for earlier enrollment/coursework. Credit acceptance and GPA inclusion are separate questions.

Academic standing, graduation, and financial aid

A 2.0 cumulative GPA is the minimum acceptable level for standard undergraduate coursework and graduation at UNH. Good academic standing uses both semester and cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.

Financial-aid satisfactory academic progress is a separate policy. The undergraduate SAP GPA minimum is also 2.0, but SAP includes credit-completion and time-frame requirements, so a GPA calculator alone cannot determine financial-aid eligibility.

UNH graduation honors

For bachelor’s degrees, UNH publishes Latin-honors GPA bands along with a minimum graded-UNH-credit requirement. The Registrar currently lists Cum Laude at 3.50–3.64, Magna Cum Laude at 3.65–3.84, and Summa Cum Laude at 3.84–4.00. Because honors certification also depends on graded UNH credits and the applicable graduation cycle, verify the current Registrar rules rather than relying on GPA alone.

Graduate and Law students

UNH graduate students use the same basic letter-point scale, but graduate credit requires B- or higher, graduate courses cannot be taken Pass/Fail, and repeat conditions differ. Franklin Pierce School of Law has its own academic rules. This undergraduate calculator therefore routes those records to review instead of applying undergraduate assumptions.

Does UNH use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. Standard UNH letter grades run from A = 4.00 through F = 0.00, with plus/minus values such as A- = 3.67 and B+ = 3.33.

Does an F count in my UNH GPA?

A standard F does: it contributes zero grade points while its graded credits remain in the GPA denominator. An F under the undergraduate Pass/Fail option is different and is excluded from GPA.

Does AF count in the UNH GPA?

Yes. UNH treats Administrative Failure (AF) the same as F for GPA calculation.
