How University of Iowa GPA is calculated

For standard University of Iowa letter-graded coursework, multiply each course’s semester hours by the grade-point value, add the grade points, and divide by the GPA-bearing semester hours.

An F contributes zero grade points, but its semester hours remain in the GPA denominator. That makes an F different from a mark that is excluded from GPA entirely.

Which Iowa grades do not affect GPA?

Marks such as P, N, S, U, successful or unsuccessful audit marks, W, and unresolved record marks such as I or IP do not enter the standard GPA calculation while they remain those marks. If a temporary mark later becomes a final letter grade, use the final grade when recalculating.

Important: Do not enter a P, S, W, or unresolved incomplete as if it were a zero-point F. A true F counts its semester hours at 0.00 points; excluded marks contribute neither GPA points nor GPA hours.

Repeating a course and the Second-Grade-Only option

A repeated Iowa course is not automatically grade replacement. For example, CLAS students may be able to request the Second-Grade-Only (SGO) option for eligible University of Iowa courses. When an approved SGO is placed on the record, the first grade remains visible but is no longer included in GPA calculations; the second grade is used instead.

Until the SGO is actually requested and applied, both attempts may continue to count. SGO rules and procedures depend on the student’s home college, and colleges can impose additional restrictions. For that reason, this calculator does not offer an automatic Repeat Impact estimate.

Does transfer credit count in your University of Iowa GPA?

Iowa keeps transfer-related GPA concepts separate from the standard UI cumulative GPA. Admissions calculates a transfer GPA from eligible transfer coursework and may include grades such as D and F in that transfer calculation. That does not mean you should mix transfer grades directly into this calculator’s UI cumulative GPA.

Academic standing and financial aid

A calculator result alone does not determine academic standing or financial-aid eligibility. For undergraduate federal financial-aid SAP, Iowa publishes a minimum 2.0 UI GPA plus a 67% pace requirement. Academic-standing rules can also depend on your college, earned hours, and term GPA.

For CLAS students, the published good-standing rules include cumulative GPA requirements that vary by earned hours and a UI term GPA requirement of at least 1.50. Always check the rule for your own college and current record rather than treating one GPA number as a universal cutoff.

Graduation with distinction

For eligible undergraduates, Iowa publishes three GPA bands for graduation with distinction:

Additional residence and graded-semester-hour requirements apply, so reaching the GPA band by itself does not establish eligibility.

When this calculator is not the right one

Calculator limitation: The College of Law uses numeric course grading rather than the standard letter-grade system used here. Graduate records also need separate treatment: the Graduate College uses the same letter-grade point values, but states that the cumulative average is truncated so it cannot exceed 4.00.

Transfer/overall GPA calculations and college-specific repeat decisions also require their own policy context. Use this calculator for the standard undergraduate UI cumulative GPA unless your program tells you a different GPA definition controls.
