How UC Davis Calculates GPA

UC Davis calculates GPA from GPA-applicable letter-graded University of California coursework. Add the grade points earned in each counted course, then divide by the total attempted UC units included in that GPA. The same basic math can be used for a quarter, a selected group of courses, or your overall UC GPA as long as you choose the correct courses.

A 4-unit A- earns 14.8 grade points, while a 4-unit B+ earns 13.2. Together, those courses produce 28.0 grade points over 8 attempted units, or a 3.500 GPA.

Which Grades Count in Your UC Davis GPA?

Letter grades A+ through F normally carry grade points. P, NP, S, U, IP, NG, Y, and I do not enter the ordinary GPA calculation while they remain those marks. An F is different from an excluded mark: it earns zero grade points but its letter-graded units remain in the denominator unless an approved repeat later excludes that attempt.

Important: An Incomplete is excluded from the ordinary GPA while pending, but UC Davis has separate rules involving Incomplete units for graduation and academic standing. Use your official record or adviser guidance for those decisions.

Do Transfer Grades Count at UC Davis?

It depends on where the course was taken. GPA-applicable letter-graded coursework from another UC campus can contribute to the overall UC GPA, and qualifying UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education coursework can also appear in UC totals. Grades from non-UC transfer institutions do not enter the cumulative UC GPA even when the units are accepted toward the degree.

How Repeated Courses Affect UC Davis GPA

UC Davis allows eligible undergraduate repeats, but grade replacement is limited. For the first 16 eligible repeated units, the most recent grade can replace the earlier grade in the GPA. After that limit is reached, or when a repeated course only partially fits within the remaining limit, both attempts can be included. Repeating a course more than once requires approval.

Calculator limitation: Repeat Impact is intentionally disabled. The shared tool cannot know how many repeat units you have already used or whether a partial-limit rule applies. For a cumulative calculation, use the attempted units and grade points shown on your official transcript after repeat processing.

Graduate repeat eligibility is different: graduate students can repeat certain C+ or lower/U work under a separate three-course framework and approval rules.

Academic Standing, Graduation, and Financial Aid

These are separate policies even when they use GPA. Undergraduate academic notice normally applies if either your term or cumulative GPA is below 2.0. UC Davis also identifies disqualification triggers that include a term GPA below 1.5 or remaining on academic notice for two consecutive terms without reaching a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

For a bachelor’s degree, the university scholarship requirement is a 2.000 GPA in University coursework, alongside all other degree and college requirements. Financial-aid SAP is evaluated separately: the published cumulative GPA standards are 2.0 for undergraduates, 3.0 for graduate students, and 2.0 for veterinary medicine students, plus pace and maximum-timeframe requirements.

UC Davis Admission GPA Is a Different GPA

Do not compare your enrolled UC GPA directly with an admissions threshold. For regular transfer admission, UC Davis lists a minimum 2.40 GPA in UC-transferable coursework for California residents and 2.80 for nonresidents, along with unit and course requirements. Selective majors and Transfer Admission Guarantee pathways can require higher GPAs.

Graduate applicants generally need at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA or an approved exception. Once enrolled, graduate good standing generally requires both term and cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher plus satisfactory degree progress.

Graduation Honors at UC Davis

UC Davis graduation-honors GPA cutoffs are not one permanent campuswide number. The university sets percentage-based honors levels and publishes GPA cutoffs by college for a particular graduating cycle.
