How UC Berkeley calculates GPA
UC Berkeley calculates GPA from grade points multiplied by semester units. Add the grade points from all GPA-bearing courses, then divide by the total GPA-bearing units.

An A+ does not raise the scale above 4.0. An F contributes zero grade points, but its units still remain in the GPA calculation.
Quick example: A 4-unit A earns 16.0 grade points. A 4-unit B+ earns 13.2. Together, 29.2 grade points divided by 8 GPA-bearing units gives a 3.650 GPA.
Which Berkeley grades do not count in GPA?
For undergraduates, P and NP grades are excluded from grade-point computation. Temporary or unresolved marks such as I, IP, NR, M, and RD also do not contribute grade points while they remain in those statuses.
That does not mean every excluded grade has the same effect on degree progress or financial aid. For example, P/NP courses can matter for unit limits and financial-aid pace even though they do not change the GPA itself. S and U grades are also left out of the GPA.
How repeated courses affect your Berkeley GPA
Berkeley’s repeat rule cannot be reduced to a simple “new grade always replaces old grade” rule. For the first 12 graded units of repeated courses, the most recent eligible grade generally replaces the earlier deficient grade in the GPA. Once the graded repeat-unit threshold is exceeded, both grades are included in the GPA.
Calculator limitation: Repeat Impact is intentionally disabled in this calculator. The correct treatment depends on your cumulative repeat history, the original grade, the repeat attempt, and whether the course falls inside the first 12 graded repeat units. Use the GPA already shown on your Berkeley record as your prior baseline, or confirm repeat treatment with your college adviser.
Both attempts remain on the transcript. Degree credit for a repeated course is generally awarded only once, and additional attempts have separate approval rules. You can repeat a course only if your first grade was a D+, D, D-, F, NP or U. Repeating the same course more than once needs approval from your dean.
Do transfer grades count in the UC Berkeley GPA?
It depends on where the course was taken. Ordinary transfer grades from community colleges, private universities, out-of-state institutions, and similar non-UC sources generally do not enter the Berkeley GPA even when the units transfer.
Grades from coursework at other UC campuses can enter the Berkeley GPA. UC Berkeley Extension XB courses completed after you have matriculated at Berkeley can also carry grade points into the Berkeley GPA. Check your Transfer Credit Report in CalCentral before adding this work as GPA-bearing coursework.
UC Berkeley Current, Projected, and Target GPA
To estimate a cumulative GPA, enter your current Berkeley GPA and the GPA-bearing units behind it, then add completed courses that are not already included in that baseline. The calculator combines the existing grade points with the new course grade points.
For a projected GPA, add planned courses and the grades you want to test. For a target GPA, enter the cumulative GPA you want and the number of future GPA-bearing units you expect to take. If the required future average is above 4.0, the target is not mathematically reachable within that number of units.
UC Berkeley GPA requirements students often confuse

These are different GPA concepts used for different purposes. A calculator estimate does not determine admission, academic standing, financial aid, honors, or graduation eligibility.

UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate GPA are not identical contexts
This calculator is designed for the standard undergraduate Berkeley institutional GPA. Graduate Division defines its GPA using upper-division and graduate coursework taken in graduate standing and applies a 3.0 minimum for good standing and degree award, with some programs setting higher standards.
If you are a graduate student, use your official graduate record and program requirements rather than assuming every undergraduate course or transfer rule applies the same way.

Is an A+ worth 4.3 at UC Berkeley?
No. Berkeley awards 4.0 grade points per unit for both A+ and A. An A- is 3.7.
Does a P raise my Berkeley GPA?
No. An undergraduate P is excluded from grade-point computation, so it does not raise or lower GPA.
Does an NP lower my Berkeley GPA?
NP is excluded from undergraduate GPA computation. It can still matter for credit, academic progress, repeat eligibility, and financial-aid pace.
Does an F count in the Berkeley GPA?
Yes. An F is worth 0.0 grade points, and its units are included in the GPA calculation.
Does retaking a failed class replace the old grade?
For eligible repeats within the first 12 graded repeat units, the most recent grade generally replaces the earlier deficient grade in GPA computation. Beyond that threshold, both grades count, so you need your repeat history to know the correct treatment.
Do community college grades count in my Berkeley GPA?
Generally no. The course may transfer for units or requirements, but ordinary non-UC transfer grade points are excluded from the Berkeley GPA.
Do grades from another UC campus count?
They can. Berkeley’s Central Evaluation Unit states that grades from coursework at other UC campuses are calculated into the Berkeley GPA when processed as qualifying transfer work.
What GPA do I need to graduate from UC Berkeley?
All undergraduates need at least a 2.00 overall GPA for graduation, along with the university, campus, college, major, unit, and residence requirements that apply to their degree.
