University of Oklahoma GPA Calculator

Use this University of Oklahoma GPA calculator to estimate the Norman-campus undergraduate retention/graduation GPA on OU’s 4.0 scale. Enter credit hours and A–F grades to calculate current or cumulative GPA, add planned courses for a projection, or work backward from a target GPA. The guide also explains transfer work, neutral grades and OU’s current academic-forgiveness rules.

How to use the OU GPA calculator

Enter your previous retention/graduation GPA and the GPA-bearing credit hours behind it if you want a cumulative estimate. Then add completed courses with their credit hours and final grades. You can also open Planned Courses to estimate a future GPA or use the target tool to see the average needed over a chosen number of future hours.

Important: This calculator is designed around the undergraduate retention/graduation GPA used at OU’s Norman campus. OU also displays other GPA types, including an OU-only GPA and cumulative figures without academic forgiveness, so make sure the GPA and hours you enter come from the same GPA definition.

University of Oklahoma GPA scale

OU uses a standard 4.0 grade-point scale for A–F coursework.

GradeGrade points per credit hourGPA treatment
A4.0Counts
B3.0Counts
C2.0Counts
D1.0Counts
F0.0Counts; hours remain in the GPA denominator
P—Excluded
S—Excluded
I—Excluded while unresolved
X—Excluded
U—Excluded
N—Excluded
NP—Excluded
AW—Excluded
W—Excluded

P and NP are neutral for GPA purposes. Under OU’s Pass/No Pass option, the lowest letter grade that converts to P is C, but the resulting P itself does not enter the GPA.

How OU calculates GPA

For each GPA-bearing course, multiply credit hours by the grade-point value. Add those grade points and divide by the total GPA-bearing credit hours.

GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing credit hours

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12 grade points and a 3-credit B earns 9. The combined GPA is 21 ÷ 6 = 3.500.

The calculator shows three decimals for planning. Use your official OU record for the GPA the university actually reports and applies.

Do transfer grades count in an OU GPA?

They can count in the undergraduate retention/graduation GPA. OU states that this GPA is based on attempted work from both OU and transfer institutions, after applicable academic-forgiveness adjustments. Credit completed elsewhere can affect the retention/graduation GPA when it is recorded by Academic Records.

That is different from the OU GPA, which is based on OU coursework. When entering a previous GPA, do not combine an OU-only GPA with hours from the broader retention/graduation record.

Repeated courses and academic forgiveness

Calculator limitation: Do not use a simple “replace the old grade with the new grade” assumption for OU repeats. The current undergraduate policy can consider as many as four attempts and use the highest attempt when grade forgiveness applies, with additional equivalency and eligibility requirements.

Because that rule is more complex than a two-attempt replacement, Repeat Impact is not offered in this calculator. For the closest cumulative estimate, use the retention/graduation GPA and GPA hours from your OU record after approved forgiveness has been posted.

OU also has academic reprieve and academic renewal. When officially approved, affected coursework remains on the transcript but is excluded from the applicable GPA. Do not exclude a course merely because you expect a reprieve, renewal or repeat request to be approved.

Academic standing and graduation GPA

OU’s general undergraduate retention standards depend on attempted hours. These are minimum university standards; individual colleges can impose higher requirements.

PurposeGeneral OU standard
Retention, 0–29 attempted hours1.70 cumulative retention/graduation GPA
Retention, more than 30 attempted hours2.00 cumulative retention/graduation GPA
Academic Notice1.70–1.99 with 0–29 attempted hours
Undergraduate graduationAt least 2.00 retention/graduation GPA, subject to higher college requirements

Students on academic probation have additional semester-GPA requirements. A calculator result alone does not determine official standing because OU applies the full academic record and policy context.

Financial aid GPA is a separate check

Financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is not the same as academic standing. OU’s published undergraduate SAP rules generally require a 2.0 GPA plus a cumulative completion requirement; an exception may apply to students with no more than 30 attempted hours who meet the published 1.70 GPA and completion conditions. Maximum-timeframe rules also apply.

Use the Student Financial Center’s official SAP record for aid decisions rather than treating a calculator estimate as an eligibility decision.

Graduate students use separate OU rules

The Graduate College also uses the A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 scale, but graduate GPA precision, repeat eligibility, transfer treatment and academic standards differ from the undergraduate retention/graduation profile. This calculator therefore does not automate a graduate record.

University of Oklahoma GPA FAQs

Does OU use plus and minus grades for GPA?

OU’s published university grade-point system lists A, B, C, D and F with values of 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0. This calculator follows that official mapping and does not invent plus/minus values.

Does an F count in my OU GPA?

Yes. An F contributes zero grade points, but its GPA-bearing credit hours remain in the denominator unless an official academic-forgiveness policy later excludes that attempt from the relevant GPA.

Does a P or NP affect my GPA?

No. OU treats P and NP as neutral grades for GPA computation, although P may earn credit while NP does not.

Do transfer grades affect the OU retention/graduation GPA?

Yes, transfer work can be included in the retention/graduation GPA after it is recorded by OU. That does not make it part of the separate OU-only GPA.

Which repeated grade counts at OU?

For eligible undergraduate academic forgiveness under the current Registrar policy, students may repeat a course up to four times and the highest attempt is used while lower graded attempts are forgiven. Eligibility and equivalency requirements matter, so confirm the posted result on your OU record.

What GPA do I need to graduate from OU?

The university-wide minimum retention/graduation GPA is 2.0, but a degree-recommending college may require a higher standard. Degree requirements involve more than GPA alone.

What GPA puts an OU undergraduate on academic probation?

Students with more than 30 attempted hours and a cumulative GPA below 2.0 are placed on academic probation; students below 30 attempted hours are placed on probation below 1.70. OU separately defines Academic Notice for students with 0–29 attempted hours and a 1.70–1.99 GPA.

What GPA is needed for transfer admission to OU?

OU lists assured transfer admission for students with at least 24 non-remedial credit hours and a minimum 2.5 GPA, while some colleges require more. An Oklahoma community-college AA or AS can also satisfy an assured-admission route.
