How to use the IU GPA calculator
Enter your previous IU GPA and GPA credit hours if you already have a cumulative record, then add your completed courses with their credit hours and final grades. You can also open Planned Courses to see a projected GPA or use the target tool to estimate the average you would need over future credits.
Important: This profile is for IU Bloomington undergraduate institutional GPA planning. Graduate and professional programs can have separate continuation and degree rules. Fresh Start also changes the official record in a way this calculator does not reconstruct course by course.
Indiana University GPA scale
IU uses a 4.0 scale, and an A+ does not exceed 4.0.

Only A+ through F are used in the ordinary IU GPA calculation. Grades such as P, S, I, R, W, NC, NR and NY do not carry GPA points. An F is different from an excluded grade: it contributes zero grade points, but its GPA credit hours still count in the denominator.
How IU calculates GPA
For each GPA-bearing course, multiply the course credit hours by the grade-point value. Add those grade points and divide by the total GPA credit hours.
GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA credit hours
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 grade points and a 3-credit B- earns 8.1. Together, that is 20.1 grade points over 6 GPA credit hours, or a 3.350 GPA.
Repeating a course and the X grade replacement policy
IU Bloomington undergraduates may be able to retake a course and use the X grade replacement process so the earlier grade no longer counts in GPA. It is not automatic. Bloomington Student Central directs students to their advisor or school record office and requires a petition; the standard limit is no more than three courses or 10 credits, whichever is less.
Calculator limitation: Use Repeat Impact only after your school confirms that the course and attempts are eligible for X replacement. Unit restrictions, misconduct grades, repeat equivalency, and other record details can change eligibility. A W, I, or NC on the retake does not trigger replacement of the earlier grade.
Transfer courses and other non-IU credit
Accepted coursework from a non-IU institution can count toward degree requirements, but its grade does not enter your IU GPA. In the calculator, choose Non-IU transfer course so the credits and grade are excluded from the GPA estimate.
Credit earned by examination or assessed prior learning is also excluded from GPA. IU policy even allows an A to denote clearly superior performance on some assessed credit, but that A is not used in GPA.
Fresh Start through academic renewal
IU Bloomington’s Fresh Start policy can remove earlier grades from the GPA of eligible returning undergraduates who meet the policy conditions, including the required time away and readmission requirements. Because this is an official record recalculation, use the GPA and GPA hours shown after IU applies Fresh Start rather than trying to remove old courses manually in this calculator.
GPA requirements depend on the purpose
Do not treat every IU GPA threshold as the same rule. Financial-aid satisfactory academic progress uses the graduation GPA requirement for your academic program, while schools and majors can set additional degree or progression requirements. Academic distinction is based on class standing within the degree-granting unit rather than one fixed university-wide GPA cutoff.
For transfer admission to IU Bloomington, the currently published minimum cumulative college GPA is 2.3 for Indiana residents and 2.5 for nonresidents. Those are admission standards for applicants, not thresholds for calculating an enrolled student’s IU GPA.

Is an A+ worth 4.3 at Indiana University?
No. At Indiana University, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points per credit hour.
Does an F count in my IU GPA?
Yes. An F is worth 0.0 grade points, and its GPA credit hours remain in the calculation.
Do P or S grades affect my IU GPA?
No. P and S are excluded from the GPA calculation. They can still have separate credit or degree implications.
Do transfer grades count in my IU Bloomington GPA?
No. Accepted non-IU transfer credit may apply toward your degree, but the external grade does not count in the IU GPA.
Can I replace a bad grade by retaking the course?
Possibly. Bloomington undergraduates may qualify for the X grade replacement process, but eligibility is conditional and requires school/unit review and a petition. The calculator’s repeat result is only an estimate for an approved replacement.
What happens to an Incomplete?
An I is not included in GPA while it remains incomplete. Under IU policy, it must be resolved within the allowed period, normally no more than one year; if no final grade is submitted by the deadline and withdrawal is not allowed, the registrar changes it to F.
Does Fresh Start erase my old courses?
Fresh Start can remove qualifying pre-return grades from the GPA, but C-or-better coursework may continue to count toward degree requirements. Use your official recalculated IU GPA baseline after the policy is applied.
What GPA do graduate students need?
Graduate expectations are program-specific and should not be inferred from this undergraduate calculator. Many IU Graduate School contexts use a 3.0/B standard, but individual schools and programs can impose their own rules.
