How Illinois Tech calculates undergraduate GPA

Illinois Tech calculates GPA by dividing total grade points by total graded credit hours. For the standard undergraduate scale, A is worth 4 points per credit hour, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, and E is 0. The current catalog also treats NA (non-attendance) as equivalent to E for GPA calculations.

Quick example: A 3-credit A earns 12 grade points and a 3-credit B earns 9. That is 21 grade points across 6 graded credit hours, for a 3.500 GPA.

All Illinois Tech courses that carry GPA grades apply to the cumulative GPA even when a course does not apply to the requirements of a particular degree program. Illinois Tech also reports a term GPA and, for undergraduates with a declared major, a major GPA. The major GPA is a separate calculation based on the courses assigned to that major’s academic unit, so this calculator should not be treated as an automatic major-GPA audit.

Which grades do not count in the standard GPA?

Several Illinois Tech marks carry no GPA hours in the standard calculation. These include P/F and S/U grades, transfer credit, audit, withdrawal, non-graded marks, and temporary grades such as I, R, and X while they remain unresolved.

Important: An E is different from an F on Illinois Tech’s P/F basis. E is a standard failing letter grade that contributes zero grade points while its graded hours remain in the GPA denominator. The catalog’s P/F grade F does not carry GPA hours.

Do transfer grades count toward IIT GPA?

No. Illinois Tech may award transfer credit for eligible outside coursework, but transfer grades are not included in the Illinois Tech cumulative or major GPA. Transfer-credit eligibility is a separate decision from GPA treatment; undergraduate transfer courses generally need the equivalent of C or better, and C- is not accepted for transfer credit.

How course repeats affect IIT GPA

Illinois Tech undergraduates may request a repeat for grade exclusion under the university’s repeat policy. When an eligible repeat is approved, both grades remain on the transcript, but the second grade is used in the GPA calculation even when it is lower than the first.

The policy is not automatic. Undergraduate students may use grade exclusion for a limited number of courses, the same course may be repeated only once for this purpose, timing rules apply, and some repeats require adviser approval. A second grade of I, R, S, U, W, X, or AU does not produce the ordinary replacement treatment.

Calculator limitation: Use the Repeat Impact feature only to estimate an already eligible or approved undergraduate grade-exclusion repeat of the same course and credit value. The calculator cannot decide whether your repeat request will be approved.

What GPA is needed for good academic standing?

For Mies-campus undergraduates, Illinois Tech’s current academic-progress rules use three separate GPA measures. Good standing requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, a major GPA of at least 2.0, and a current-term GPA of at least 1.85. Falling below any of those levels can lead to academic probation, and programs may impose additional requirements.

These same GPA levels are part of the university’s financial-aid satisfactory academic progress framework, alongside pace-of-completion and maximum-timeframe requirements. A GPA calculator cannot determine financial-aid eligibility by itself.

What GPA is required to graduate from Illinois Tech?

Undergraduate graduation requires at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA and a 2.00 major GPA, along with the degree’s course, credit-hour, core, residency, and other requirements. Students below a required GPA after completing their curriculum may need approved additional coursework to raise it.

Graduation honors

Undergraduates need at least 60 graded credit hours completed at Illinois Tech to receive Latin honors. The current catalog lists cum laude at 3.50–3.699, magna cum laude at 3.70–3.849, and summa cum laude at 3.85–4.00. Only Illinois Tech courses are factored into this honors GPA.

Undergraduate, graduate, and Chicago-Kent GPAs are different contexts

This calculator profile is designed for the standard Mies-campus undergraduate cumulative GPA. Illinois Tech graduate students use the same basic 4.0 framework but have separate academic rules: a 3.0 cumulative GPA is the general satisfactory standard and is required for a graduate degree, and graduate repeat limits differ from undergraduate rules.

Chicago-Kent College of Law must be treated separately. Chicago-Kent publishes its own J.D. and LL.M. GPA calculators and uses plus/minus grade-point mappings that are not the standard Mies-campus A/B/C/D/E undergraduate scale. Law students should use Chicago-Kent’s Registrar resources rather than this calculator.

Does IIT use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. For standard Illinois Tech undergraduate GPA calculations, A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and E=0 per graded credit hour. NA is also treated as the equivalent of E for GPA calculations.

Does Illinois Tech use plus and minus grades for the standard undergraduate GPA?

Does an NA count in GPA?

Yes. Illinois Tech states that, beginning in Fall 2023, NA is equivalent to the failing grade E for GPA calculations.

Do S/U courses affect IIT GPA?
