How Duke Calculates GPA
Duke undergraduates in Trinity and Pratt use a 4.0 scale. Your GPA is credit-weighted: multiply each GPA-bearing course’s Duke course credits by its grade-point value, add the grade points, and divide by the total GPA-bearing course credits.
Quick answer: A+ and A are both worth 4.0 at Duke. Duke does not use a 4.3 value for A+ in the undergraduate GPA.

Duke’s Registrar describes semester GPA as the GPA for one semester and cumulative GPA as the summary of Duke courses across your career. Duke does not calculate an official GPA within a major, minor, or certificate.
Which Duke Grades Count in GPA?
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading needs special attention. An S is excluded from GPA, while U carries 0.0 grade points in Duke’s undergraduate GPA table. Temporary or administrative notations such as I, X, Z, W, N, AD, and WA should not be converted into made-up grade points; update the calculator when a final GPA-bearing grade is posted.

Duke GPA Example
Suppose you complete two 1.0-credit Duke courses and earn an A and a B. The A contributes 4.0 grade points and the B contributes 3.0, so your GPA is:
(4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 2.0 = 3.500
For a half-credit course, weight the grade by 0.5. A 0.5-credit B-, for example, contributes 0.5 × 2.7 = 1.35 grade points.
Do Transfer Grades Count in Duke GPA?
No. Grades from approved external transfer courses are not included in Duke GPA. Duke may award transfer credit when its requirements are met, but the outside grade itself does not become part of the Duke GPA calculation.
Duke-credit study-away courses are different. When a study-away course carries Duke credit and a Duke grade, that grade can factor into GPA. If your program mixes Duke credit and transfer credit, check the credit type before entering the course.
How Repeated Courses Affect Duke GPA
Duke does not use a simple grade-replacement rule for undergraduate repeats. For an approved repeat of a D-, D, or D+ course, both the original grade and the repeated grade are generally calculated in GPA, even though course credit is not simply earned twice for graduation purposes.
Calculator limitation: The Repeat Impact button is disabled for Duke because the shared repeat tool models grade replacement, which would be wrong here. For an eligible D-range repeat, enter the two GPA-bearing attempts as separate completed rows.
A retake after an original F needs different treatment. Duke’s faculty policy says that when a previously failed course is retaken for credit and passed, the original F remains in GPA while the passing retake is not factored into GPA. Select the calculator’s Retake after an original F course type so the tool pauses the numerical result instead of applying ordinary count-all math.
Projected and Target Duke GPA
For a projected GPA, add your planned Duke courses with expected grades. The calculator combines those projected grade points with your current GPA-bearing record.
For a target GPA, enter the cumulative GPA you want and the number of future Duke course credits you expect to take. The calculator estimates the average grade points per course credit you would need. If the required average is above 4.0, that target is not mathematically reachable within the number of credits entered.
Planning note: If you enter a rounded prior GPA rather than the underlying Duke grade-point totals, a projection can differ slightly from DukeHub’s eventual calculation.
Academic Standing and Financial Aid Are Separate
Do not use one GPA number as a substitute for every Duke academic rule. Trinity continuation and probation consider course-credit progress and D/F/U patterns, not just cumulative GPA. A Trinity student on probation can clear probation with a C (2.0) semester average or with no grade below C- for that probationary semester.
Federal undergraduate financial-aid SAP is a separate standard. Duke currently lists a cumulative GPA requirement of at least 1.6588 after the second academic year and at later SAP reviews, together with pace and maximum-time requirements. That number should not be presented as Duke’s universal academic-standing or graduation GPA cutoff.
Duke Honors and Dean’s List
Duke publishes honors and Dean’s List cutoffs by school, class year, and term, so there is no single permanent GPA threshold to build into this calculator. The Registrar also notes that GPAs used in its honors tables are truncated to three digits to the right of the decimal.
Check the current Duke honors table for the semester and school that apply to you rather than relying on an older cutoff.

Is an A+ worth 4.3 at Duke?
No. For Duke undergraduates, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points.
Is a D- worth less than a D at Duke?
No. Duke assigns both D and D- a value of 1.0. D+ is 1.3.
Does an S affect my Duke GPA?
No. An S is excluded from the GPA calculation. A U is different: Duke’s undergraduate GPA table assigns U a value of 0.0.
Do transfer grades count toward Duke GPA?

Does repeating a Duke course replace the old grade?

What GPA do I need to get off Trinity academic probation?
For the probationary semester, Trinity states that you clear probation by maintaining a C (2.0) average or having no grade below C-. Other continuation requirements still apply.
