How Columbia College calculates GPA

Important: This calculator is scoped to Columbia College. Columbia University has school-specific grading systems; for example, Columbia Business School uses a different grading scale. Worked example

A 4-credit A earns 16.00 grade points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.99. Together, 25.99 grade points divided by 7 GPA-bearing credits gives an estimated GPA of 3.713.

What counts in your Columbia College GPA?

Standard Columbia College letter grades count. A grade of P does not enter the GPA. W, R, and unresolved temporary marks such as IN or YC also do not contribute while they remain non-qualitative marks.

Under the Pass/D/Fail option, a grade of C- or higher is covered by P and excluded from GPA. A D or F is not covered: it remains on the record and counts at 1.00 or 0.00 respectively.

Transfer credit and study abroad

Outside credit and GPA are not the same thing. Eligible transfer coursework can help satisfy degree-credit requirements without its external grade becoming part of your Columbia College GPA.

Columbia-sponsored study-abroad programs are different: their grades can appear as direct Columbia credit and enter the cumulative GPA. Approved programs run by other institutions are generally treated as transfer credit, so their grades do not enter the Columbia College cumulative GPA.

Columbia College’s retake treatment is conditional. If you retake a course after earning credit, the first instance generally controls degree credit and the degree-audit GPA treatment. A failed first attempt has different consequences because the first attempt did not earn credit. Check your Degree Audit in Vergil and confirm unusual retakes with your advising dean instead of assuming ordinary grade replacement.

Projected and target GPA

For a projection, add planned courses with the grades you expect to earn. The calculator combines their grade points with your current GPA-bearing record.

For a target, enter the GPA you want and the number of future credits you plan to take. The result is the average grade-point value you would need over those credits. If the required average is above 4.33, that target is not mathematically reachable in the entered number of credits.

Does a Pass count in my Columbia GPA?
