How Clemson calculates GPA
Clemson’s undergraduate GPA is based on quality points divided by GPA hours. Multiply each course’s credit hours by the grade value, add the quality points, and divide by the total GPA hours included in the calculation.

Important: Clemson’s calculator is for undergraduate Clemson GPA. Graduate grading uses a different scale, including plus/minus grade values, so graduate students should use their graduate record and Graduate School rules instead.
Clemson GPA formula
Clemson GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA hours
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12 quality points and a 4-credit B earns 12 quality points. Together, those courses produce 24 quality points over 7 GPA hours, or a 3.429 GPA.
If you already have a cumulative GPA, the calculator uses your previous GPA and GPA hours as the baseline, then adds the courses you enter. Using the GPA hours and quality points from your Clemson transcript is the safest way to match your official record closely.
What happens to an F or Incomplete at Clemson?
An F earns zero quality points but still affects the GPA because its course hours are included. That means an F can lower your cumulative GPA substantially even though it contributes no quality points.
An I is temporary. Clemson treats an unresolved Incomplete as an F in the GPA until the required work is completed and a final grade replaces it. If your I has already been changed to a final grade, enter the final grade instead.
Do P/NP courses affect Clemson GPA?
No. P and NP grades do not earn quality points and do not affect the Clemson GPA. Do not treat an NP as a zero-point F when estimating your institutional GPA.
Do transfer grades count in Clemson GPA?
No. Clemson may accept credit from another institution, but the outside grade does not enter your Clemson GPA. The calculator therefore excludes courses entered as external transfer work.
This distinction matters for other purposes. A scholarship, professional school, graduate program, or transfer-admission review may consider grades from other institutions even though Clemson’s institutional GPA does not.
Repeated courses and Academic Forgiveness
Clemson’s Academic Forgiveness Policy can remove eligible D or F courses from the GPA calculation, but it is not automatic. Enrolled degree-seeking students may request forgiveness for up to two eligible Clemson courses, and the policy includes restrictions involving timing, academic integrity, prerequisites, graduation requirements, transfer credit, and financial aid.
Calculator limitation: The Repeat Impact button is not offered for Clemson because a generic grade-replacement model would be misleading. Enter repeated Clemson attempts as separate courses unless Clemson has officially approved Academic Forgiveness for an attempt. Only then should you mark that attempt as an officially forgiven Clemson course so it is excluded.
A forgiven grade remains visible on the academic record even though its GPA effect is removed. If the course is required for graduation, Clemson may still require it to be repeated satisfactorily.

Does Clemson use plus and minus grades for undergraduate GPA?
The standard undergraduate GPA calculator uses A, B, C, D, F, and I rather than plus/minus grade-point values. Clemson graduate grading is different and uses a separate plus/minus scale, so do not use this undergraduate profile for a graduate GPA.
Does an F count in Clemson GPA?
