How to Use the Case Western GPA Calculator

Case Western GPA Scale
CWRU’s general undergraduate GPA uses five evaluative letter grades.

A key detail is that NP is not treated like an ordinary F for GPA purposes. An NP earns no credit, but CWRU states that both P and NP are excluded from GPA. An ordinary F, by contrast, contributes zero quality points while its credit hours remain in the GPA calculation.
How Case Western Calculates GPA
CWRU multiplies each evaluative grade’s quality-point value by the course’s credit hours. Add those quality points and divide by the total credit hours attached to A, B, C, D, and F grades.
GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA-bearing credit hours
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12 quality points and a 3-credit B earns 9. Together, the courses produce 21 quality points over 6 credit hours, for a 3.500 GPA.
Transfer credit, AP/IB/proficiency credit, and P/NP courses are not included in this undergraduate GPA calculation.
Repeated Courses at Case Western
Quick answer: Repeating an undergraduate course does not replace the original grade in your CWRU GPA. Both the original grade and the repeated grade are included in semester and cumulative GPA, each weighted by the course credit hours.
Because the shared calculator’s Repeat Impact tool is designed for grade-replacement policies, it is disabled for Case Western undergraduate GPA. To estimate a repeat, enter the original graded attempt and the repeated graded attempt as separate completed courses unless one of those attempts is already included in the previous-GPA baseline you entered.
CWRU generally awards degree credit for the repeated course only once. If a student repeats a course for which transfer or test credit had already been awarded, the university removes that original credit and awards credit for the CWRU course instead.
Do Transfer Grades Count Toward Case Western GPA?
No. CWRU states that grades for courses taken at other institutions are not entered on the student’s CWRU record and are not computed in the CWRU GPA. Transfer-credit approval and GPA inclusion are separate questions.
The calculator therefore provides an external-transfer course type that excludes those courses from the GPA estimate. AP, IB, proficiency, and similar examination credit are excluded as well.
Academic Standing, Graduation, and Financial Aid
These thresholds answer different questions and should not be treated as one universal GPA rule.

Graduate and Professional GPA Rules Are Different
CWRU’s university-wide grading key includes plus/minus grades for specified graduate and professional schools, and Graduate Studies uses a different repeat policy from the general undergraduate rule. Graduate students may, with approval and within policy limits, repeat certain courses so the first grade is removed from the GPA calculation and the new grade is used.
That is materially different from the undergraduate count-all repeat rule. Use this calculator only for the supported general undergraduate record.
Case Western GPA FAQs
Does Case Western use plus and minus grades for undergraduate GPA?
The general undergraduate grade scale published in the CWRU Bulletin uses A, B, C, D, and F without plus/minus values. Plus/minus grades shown in the university-wide grading key apply only to specified graduate and professional schools.
Does an F count in my Case Western GPA?
Yes. An F is worth 0 quality points, and its credit hours remain in the GPA denominator.
Does NP count as a 0.0 like an F?
