Arizona State GPA Calculator

Use this Arizona State University GPA calculator to estimate your
semester or cumulative ASU GPA with the current 4.33-point A+ scale. It
supports plus/minus grades, projected and target GPA planning, excluded
grades such as P and Y, and ASU’s 4.00 cumulative GPA cap. Transfer
grades and complicated repeat histories are kept out of the calculation
when ASU policy requires separate treatment.

How ASU Calculates GPA

ASU calculates GPA by multiplying each GPA-bearing grade value by the
course’s semester hours, adding those honor points, and dividing by the
total net GPA hours. The calculator uses that same credit-weighted
method for standard undergraduate ASU coursework from fall 2004 forward.

Important: An A+ is worth 4.33 grade points per credit at ASU, but
the cumulative ASU GPA is capped at 4.00. That means A+ grades can add
extra honor points without allowing the official cumulative GPA to
rise above 4.00.

ASU reports GPA to the nearest hundredth. This calculator may show extra
decimal precision for planning, so use your official ASU record for the
posted GPA.

ASU Grade Point Scale

GradeGrade pointsCounts in GPA?
A+4.33Yes
A4.00Yes
A-3.67Yes
B+3.33Yes
B3.00Yes
B-2.67Yes
C+2.33Yes
C2.00Yes
D1.00Yes
E0.00Yes
EN, EU, XE0.00Yes
P—No
Y—No
W, X—No
I, NR, Z—Not while unresolved

ASU’s standard fall-2004-and-later scale does not list C-, D+ or D- as
ordinary grades. Do not substitute a generic plus/minus scale for the
ASU table.

Worked ASU GPA Example

Suppose you take two 3-credit courses and earn an A+ and a B-:

  • A+: 3 × 4.33 = 12.99 honor points
  • B-: 3 × 2.67 = 8.01 honor points
  • Total: 21.00 honor points ÷ 6 GPA hours = 3.50 GPA

An E works differently from an excluded grade: its semester hours stay
in the GPA denominator but contribute zero honor points. A P, by
contrast, can earn credit hours without entering the GPA calculation.

Which ASU Grades Do Not Count in GPA?

A P grade earns hours but is not used to compute GPA. Y is also excluded
from GPA. W withdrawals and X audits do not enter the GPA calculation,
while I, NR and Z should not be treated as final grades while they
remain unresolved.

Incomplete warning: For an undergraduate course, an unresolved I
can automatically change to E after one calendar year. Use the final
grade on your ASU record when it is available.

Do Transfer Grades Count in Your ASU GPA?

No. ASU may consider grades from other colleges for admission and may
award transfer credit, but the ASU cumulative GPA is based on
coursework taken at ASU
. Do not add an outside college’s grade points
to the ASU cumulative GPA calculator.

This is different from a transfer-admission GPA. Transfer applicants are
evaluated using a cumulative transfer GPA under ASU admission rules,
which is a separate number from the GPA you build after enrolling at
ASU.

How Repeated Courses Affect ASU GPA

ASU does not have one simple repeat rule that can safely be applied to
every transcript. For students newly admitted in fall 2008 or later,
eligible repeats can receive highest-grade treatment within a
12-credit-hour replacement allowance. Beyond that allowance, both grades
can affect the cumulative GPA. Older admission cohorts follow different
rules.

Calculator limitation: Repeat Impact is intentionally not offered
in this ASU calculator. Eligibility depends on the original grade,
admission cohort, repeat limits and other record details, so an
automatic “replace the old grade” estimate could be wrong.

If you are repeating a D or E-family grade, check the Registrar’s repeat
policy and your My ASU record before estimating the change manually.

ASU GPA Requirements Students Commonly Ask About

These numbers apply to different purposes and should not be treated as
one universal cutoff.

Undergraduate academic good standing2.00 ASU cumulative GPA or higher
General undergraduate graduation minimum2.00 cumulative GPA in ASU coursework; some programs require more
Dean’s List3.50+ semester GPA with at least 12 graded resident hours

Undergraduate financial-aid SAP GPA standard2.00, plus separate pace and maximum-hours rules
Graduate low-GPA thresholdBelow 3.00 triggers automatic Graduate College low-GPA probation; program rules may add requirements

A calculator result does not itself determine standing, graduation,
honors or financial-aid eligibility. Those decisions can involve credit
completion, program requirements, review periods and other rules in
addition to GPA.

ASU Admission GPA Is Different From Your ASU College GPA

For first-year admission, a 3.00 unweighted GPA in ASU’s competency
courses is one way to meet the university’s aptitude requirement; ASU
also publishes alternative aptitude routes. That admission GPA is not
the same calculation as your later ASU institutional GPA.

Transfer admission uses a cumulative transfer GPA. The general threshold
is 2.50 for many applicants with 12 or more transferable
post-high-school credits, while some associate-degree pathways and
specific programs use different requirements. Always check the current
admission rule for your situation.

Academic Renewal at ASU

ASU has an academic renewal process for certain returning undergraduate
students. Among the core conditions, the student must be pursuing a
first undergraduate degree, have an ASU cumulative GPA below 2.0, have
been away for at least five consecutive years, and not have previously
received academic renewal.

Academic renewal changes how the official record is evaluated, so it
should not be simulated by simply deleting old courses from this
calculator.

ASU GPA Calculator FAQs

Is an A+ a 4.0 or 4.33 at ASU?

An A+ is worth 4.33 grade points per credit at ASU. However, ASU
caps the cumulative GPA at 4.00.

Can my ASU cumulative GPA be higher than 4.0?

No. The Registrar states that the cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00 even
though A+ carries a 4.33 grade-point value.

Does ASU have a C- grade?

ASU’s standard fall-2004-and-later grade table lists C+ and C, then D;
it does not list C- as an ordinary grade on that scale.

Does a P grade affect ASU GPA?

No. A P can earn hours, but it is not used in computing the GPA.

Does an E count in ASU GPA?

Yes. E is worth 0.00 grade points, and its GPA-bearing hours remain in
the denominator. EN, EU and XE are also treated as E-family zero-point
grades for GPA purposes.

Do transfer grades affect ASU cumulative GPA?

No. Transfer grades may matter for admission and transfer-credit
evaluation, but ASU’s cumulative institutional GPA is based on ASU
coursework.

What GPA do I need to stay in good academic standing at ASU?

Undergraduates generally need an ASU cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 for
academic good standing. Warning, probation and disqualification rules
depend on the student’s academic history and review status.

What GPA do I need for the ASU Dean’s List?

Undergraduates need a semester GPA of at least 3.50 and at least 12
graded credit hours in residence during the semester.

Does ASU replace a repeated course grade?

Sometimes, but not under one universal rule. Repeat treatment depends on
admission cohort, grade eligibility and the replacement-hour limit, so
use the Registrar’s repeat policy rather than assuming the newest grade
always replaces the old one.
