Mexican grades to US GPA
On UNF’s table a Mexican 8 is a B, not a B− or a C. The University of North Florida publishes how it reads grades from UDLAP, and the calculator uses that table for 0–10 grades:
| Band | Mexican grade | US letter | US points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 9–10 | A | 4.0 |
| Good | 8–8.9 | B | 3.0 |
| Average | 6–7.9 | C | 2.0 |
| Fail | Below 6 | F | 0.0 |
Tec de Monterrey marks out of 100 instead. Pick 1–100 scale under Mexican scale: Illinois State University counts 90–100 as an A, 80–89 as a B, 70–79 as a C and anything below 70 as an F.
Exception
Tec de Monterrey’s pass mark is 70 out of 100, higher than UNAM’s 6 out of 10. A 6.5 at UNAM passes and counts as a C, but a 65 at Tec is a fail and counts as an F.
US GPA to a Mexican grade
Mexican universities state their entry minimums on their own scale and check foreign grades one by one. The US GPA → Mexican grade tab reads UNF’s UDLAP table the other way and gives the band of the highest US letter your GPA reaches:
| Band | US GPA | US letter reached | Mexican grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 4.0 | A | 9–10 |
| Good | 3.0–3.9 | B | 8–8.9 |
| Average | 2.0–2.9 | C | 6–7.9 |
| Fail | Below 2.0 | F | Below 6 |
Example
Say you have a 3.0 GPA from a US college. It reaches a B, so it reads as 8–8.9. That matters for a master’s in Mexico: UNAM’s business graduate school and ITAM both ask for an average of at least 8.0.
How Mexican university grades work
Each course gets a whole-number grade, and your average can carry decimals. UNAM and Tec de Monterrey use different scales:
| University | Course grades | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| UNAM | 6–10 pass; 5 fails; NP = exam not taken | 6 |
| Tec de Monterrey | 1 to 100, whole numbers | 70 |
Tip
Older UNAM records may show words instead of numbers: MB (muy bien) counts as 10, B (bien) as 8 and S (suficiente) as 6. Enter the number.
Worked example: four courses
Say four 6-credit courses ended with 9.2, 8.4, 9.6 and 7.5 (this is Try a sample):
| Course | Grade | US grade |
|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 9.2 | A · 4.0 |
| Physics | 8.4 | B · 3.0 |
| Programming | 9.6 | A · 4.0 |
| Economics | 7.5 | C · 2.0 |
US GPA = (4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 2.0) ÷ 4 = 13 ÷ 4 = 3.25. The Mexican average is 8.675, which the calculator shows cut to one decimal (dropped, not rounded) as 8.6.
Myth vs fact
Myth
An 8 out of 10 is 80%, so it must be a B− in the US.
Fact
Mexican grades don’t follow US percentage letters: UNF reads every grade from 8.0 to 8.9 as a plain B.
High school grades (preparatoria)
Preparatoria grades also run from 0 to 10. Texas State University counts 9–10 as an A (4.0), 8 as a B (3.0), 6–7 as a C (2.0) and 0–5 as an F, so pick High school (preparatoria) under Mexican scale. The calculator reads an 8.5 as a B, between Texas State’s 8 and 9.
Which number to put on an application
- Applying to a US college with Mexican grades: send your certificado de estudios with its 0–10 scale; convert to a GPA only if the form asks, since some colleges recalculate it or want a credential evaluation.
- Applying to a Mexican master’s with a US degree: expect to show that your average reaches the programme’s minimum. UNAM asks for an official certificate that your average is equivalent to at least 8.0.
- A semester abroad in Mexico: your home university sets the transfer rules; Illinois State, for one, has a sheet just for Tec de Monterrey.
Frequently asked questions
What is an 8 in Mexico in GPA?
A B, 3.0. The University of North Florida reads 8.0–8.9 as a B, and James Madison University treats an 8 average as a 3.0.
What is a 9.5 in Mexico in US grades?
An A, 4.0. Every grade from 9 to 10 is an A on UNF’s UDLAP table and on Texas State’s table.
Is 6 a passing grade in Mexico?
At UNAM, yes: 6 is the lowest pass and 5 is a fail. At Tec de Monterrey the pass mark is 70 out of 100.
What is a 3.5 GPA in the Mexican scale?
Somewhere in 8–8.9. UNF gives an A only from 9, so a 3.5, which tops a B without reaching an A, lands in its B band.
What average do I need for a master’s in Mexico?
Often 8.0 out of 10. UNAM’s business graduate school and ITAM both ask for at least 8.0, and UNAM may accept down to 7.0 by committee.
