What a DO school GPA calculator does and when to use it
This calculator estimates the overall, science and non-science GPAs that AACOMAS reports to osteopathic (DO) medical schools. You enter your transcript one course at a time, and it files each grade into the right group as you go.
Definition
Verification is the step where AACOMAS checks the courses you entered against your official transcripts and works out the GPAs schools receive.
It is most useful before you submit, when you want to know how verification could change the GPA your college printed. AACOMAS counts every attempt at a repeated course, so a retake can leave your AACOMAS number below your school’s.
How to use the DO school GPA calculator
Pick the year
Each block starts with a year picker. Set it to Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Post-baccalaureate or Graduate.
Add your courses
Fill in Grade and Credits for each row and choose a Subject. Press + Add class whenever you need another row.
Watch three GPAs
The overall result sits on top, with Science GPA and Non-science GPA below it. Add year, under Options, starts the next block.
How AACOMAS calculates your science GPA
Science GPA = science quality points ÷ science credits
Science
Biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics and other sciences such as geology.
Non-science
Math and every other subject on this calculator.
Grade values
A+ and A are 4.0, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3.
Take a sophomore with two lab sciences, a geology elective, calculus and a speech class.
| Course and subject | Grade · value × credits | Quality points |
|---|---|---|
| BIOL 220 Microbiology Biology | B · 3.0 × 4 | 12.0 |
| GEOL 101 Physical Geology Other science | A · 4.0 × 3 | 12.0 |
| CHEM 142 General Chemistry II Chemistry | C+ · 2.3 × 4 | 9.2 |
| MATH 152 Calculus II Math | B− · 2.7 × 4 | 10.8 |
| COMM 110 Public Speaking Non-science | A · 4.0 × 3 | 12.0 |
Science adds microbiology, geology and chemistry: 12.0 + 12.0 + 9.2 = 33.2 over 11 credits, so 33.2 ÷ 11 = 3.018, shown as 3.02.
Your non-science GPA comes from calculus plus public speaking: 10.8 + 12.0 = 22.8 over 7 credits, or 3.26.
Overall, 56.0 quality points ÷ 18 credits = 3.111. The calculator reads Undergraduate GPA (AACOMAS) 3.11, Science GPA 3.02 and Non-science GPA 3.26.
How to read your AACOMAS GPA result
Your headline figure is the undergraduate overall GPA, built from freshman through post-baccalaureate courses. A 3.11 shows a B badge and the words “a solid B average.”

Science GPA and Non-science GPA split that same set of courses in two, so their credits always add up to your GPA credits. A Graduate GPA appears only when you add a Graduate year, and it is kept apart from the rest.
If your science number trails the overall, the by-year table in Show how it’s calculated shows which year pulled it down. To set a goal, Open GPA planner, pick your undergraduate or science GPA and type the GPA you’re aiming for.
What changes your AACOMAS science GPA
Other sciences count as science. Geology, astronomy and environmental science join biology, chemistry and physics in the AACOMAS science GPA. That is why the A in Physical Geology raised the example’s science number.
Math stays outside science here. This calculator files calculus and statistics under non-science for AACOMAS. To compare, open your courses in the AMCAS (MD) calculator with the link under your result. There, the example’s calculus joins biology and chemistry in a BCPM GPA of 2.67, and geology moves to AO.
No grade replacement. AACOMAS keeps the first grade and the retake. A D and then a B in a 4-credit chemistry course give (4 + 12) ÷ 8 = 2.0 for those credits.
P, NP, W and WF. Pass, no-pass and plain withdrawal grades add nothing to any AACOMAS figure, while WF is scored like an F.
Quarter calendar. AACOMAS multiplies quarter hours by 0.667; switch on My school uses quarter credits in Options and every course is converted before the math.
Frequently asked questions
How does AACOMAS calculate science GPA?
AACOMAS multiplies each science course’s grade value by its credits, adds those quality points and divides by the science credits. Biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics and other sciences all count.
Does AACOMAS still use grade replacement?
No. AACOMAS counts every attempt at a repeated course, so both grades stay in your GPA. Your college may still show only the newer grade on its own transcript GPA.
Is math a science course on AACOMAS?
On this calculator, math and statistics count toward the non-science GPA. AACOMAS assigns each course a subject during verification, so match the Subject to what your application shows.
Is AACOMAS GPA different from AMCAS GPA?
The grade values match, with A+ capped at 4.0 in both. The difference is grouping: AMCAS reports BCPM and AO, while AACOMAS reports science and non-science.
Do post-bacc classes count in AACOMAS GPA?
Yes, post-baccalaureate undergraduate courses count in your undergraduate GPA. Graduate courses get a separate Graduate GPA instead.
