Vanderbilt’s standard undergraduate GPA uses grade points per credit hour. Engineering also uses A+, but an A+ is worth the same 4.0 points as an A.

Which Vanderbilt grades count in GPA?

Letter grades from A through F count in the GPA, with F contributing zero grade points while its GPA-bearing credit hours remain in the denominator unless a valid repeat replacement later applies. A grade of Pass does not enter the GPA. Withdrawals and temporary I or M grades are also excluded while unresolved.

Transfer credit does not affect the Vanderbilt GPA. The undergraduate GPA formula also excludes study-abroad courses, even though those courses may still matter for degree requirements or progress.

How Vanderbilt calculates GPA

The formula is:

GPA = total grade points ÷ GPA-bearing credit hours

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 grade points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.9. Together, those courses produce 21.9 grade points over 6 GPA-bearing credits, for a GPA of 3.650 in this calculator.

Repeating a course at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt generally uses the most recent final grade when an eligible course is repeated for grade replacement, while all grades remain on the transcript. Failed courses may be repeated until passed, while a passed course may generally be repeated once.

Eligibility is not identical in every undergraduate school. A&S does not allow Core 1010 or Core 1020 to be repeated for replacement, Engineering limits replacement repeats to courses with an original grade of C+ or below, and independent or directed study cannot be repeated for grade replacement. Check your school rules before adjusting a GPA estimate for a repeat.

Transfer credit and study abroad

Approved transfer courses can count toward a Vanderbilt degree without bringing the external grade into the Vanderbilt GPA. Transfer work is posted without the external institution’s grade affecting the Vanderbilt institutional GPA.

Study-abroad courses are also excluded from the undergraduate Vanderbilt GPA formula. Keep GPA inclusion separate from whether a course earns credit or satisfies a degree requirement.

GPA requirements and academic progress

Vanderbilt’s undergraduate graduation minimum is a 2.000 overall GPA and a 2.000 GPA in each academic major. Engineering also has a 2.000 requirement in specified Engineering, computer science, and data science coursework.

Academic standing is more detailed than one GPA cutoff and differs by undergraduate school and class standing. Financial-aid satisfactory academic progress is a separate standard: Vanderbilt’s undergraduate federal-aid rules use cumulative GPA thresholds along with a 67% completion-rate requirement and a maximum timeframe. Use the calculator for planning, not as an official standing or aid determination.

Dean’s List

The current undergraduate catalog describes a 3.500 semester GPA threshold for Dean’s List in the undergraduate schools, together with at least 12 graded credit hours, no temporary or missing grade, and no F. School-specific eligibility details still apply.

Graduate and professional students

For example, the Graduate School has its own grading policy and requires a 3.0 GPA for graduation, so graduate students should use their school-specific record rather than this undergraduate calculator.
