How UVA calculates undergraduate GPA

UVA calculates undergraduate GPA by multiplying each letter grade’s point value by the course credits, adding those grade points, and dividing by the total credits that count in GPA.

Quick answer: An A+ does not raise the UVA scale above 4.0. Both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points per credit.

Worked example

Suppose you earn an A in a 3-credit course and a B+ in another 3-credit course. The A contributes 12.0 grade points and the B+ contributes 9.9. Your GPA for those six credits is 21.9 ÷ 6 = 3.650.

Which UVA grades count in GPA?

Standard letter grades from A+ through F count when the course is part of the undergraduate GPA. An F contributes zero grade points but still matters because the letter-graded credits remain in the GPA calculation.

Grades and notations such as CR/NC, S/U, audit, withdrawal, and incomplete do not enter the GPA while they remain non-GPA marks. If an incomplete or other temporary notation later becomes a final letter grade, use the final posted grade.

Do transfer grades count toward your UVA GPA?

No. Credit accepted from another institution can count toward your degree, but the external grade does not become part of your UVA GPA.

Study abroad exception: UVA distinguishes transfer-credit programs from direct-credit programs. Direct-credit study abroad can affect the UVA GPA, so use the grade actually posted to your UVA record rather than treating every abroad course as ordinary transfer credit.

Repeating a course at UVA

UVA’s current undergraduate repeat policy is not a simple “replace every old grade” rule. For qualifying courses originally graded D+, D, D-, or F, a repeat attempted in Fall 2025 or later can use the higher of the two grades in GPA, subject to conditions and a limit covering the first 9 repeated credits.

If the original grade was C- or higher and the course is repeated, the first grade remains in the GPA calculation. Repeating a course that already has transfer credit is treated differently again.

Current, projected, and target GPA

For a current or cumulative estimate, enter your existing UVA GPA and GPA-bearing credits if you have them, then add new completed courses. For a projected GPA, add planned courses with the grades you want to test.

The target tool works backward from your current GPA and credits to estimate the average grade points per credit you would need over a chosen number of future credits. If the required average is above 4.0, that target is not reachable within the entered number of credits on UVA’s standard undergraduate scale.

GPA requirements depend on your school and purpose

A GPA number can mean different things under different UVA policies. Student Financial Services uses a 2.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA as part of satisfactory academic progress for financial aid, alongside completion-rate and maximum-timeframe requirements.

Academic standing is school-specific. For example, full-time College of Arts & Sciences students generally need at least a 1.800 semester GPA, at least 12 credits, and no more than one grade below C- to meet the College’s Good Academic Standing criteria. The College also requires at least a 2.0 GPA on graded UVA courses offered for the degree.

Dean’s List and graduation honors vary by undergraduate school. Do not use one school’s cutoff as a university-wide requirement.
