Use this University of Nebraska–Lincoln GPA calculator to estimate your undergraduate semester or cumulative GPA on UNL’s 4.0 scale, project future grades, and work toward a target GPA. It uses Nebraska’s official plus/minus grade points and excludes P, N, I, W, and NR from GPA math. Repeat replacement is explained separately because UNL’s rule has eligibility conditions the calculator does not automate.

How to use the UNL GPA calculator

Enter your completed UNL courses with their semester credit hours and final letter grades. If you already have a cumulative GPA, add your previous GPA and GPA-bearing hours so the calculator can estimate an updated cumulative result. You can also add planned courses to see a projected GPA or enter a target GPA to estimate the average needed over future hours.

Calculator limitation: Do not use the Repeat Impact feature for UNL. Nebraska’s undergraduate repeat policy includes grade eligibility, course-equivalency, credit-hour, timing, and processing rules that are not fully represented by the shared repeat estimator.

P, N, I, W, and NR do not carry GPA weight. An F is different: it earns zero grade points but its credit hours remain in the GPA denominator.

Precision note: UNL’s current official pages agree that GPA is reported to the thousandth, but one Registrar page describes the operation as truncation while another says rounding. Treat MyRED as the authority for your official GPA; this calculator is a planning estimate.

How UNL GPA is calculated

For each GPA-bearing course, multiply the course’s credit hours by its grade-point value. Add those grade points, then divide by the total GPA-bearing credit hours.

For example, a 3-credit A− earns 11.01 grade points and a 3-credit B earns 9.00. Together, 20.01 grade points ÷ 6 credit hours = 3.335.

Pass/No Pass, incompletes, withdrawals, and no reports

A P means pass and an N means no pass, but neither contributes grade points to GPA. I, W, and NR also carry no GPA weight while they remain those symbols. If an incomplete later changes to a final letter grade, use the final posted grade when updating your estimate.

Repeating a course at Nebraska

UNL’s undergraduate repeat policy can remove an earlier C−, D+, D, D−, or F from the cumulative GPA after an eligible repeat. The earlier grade remains on the transcript, but its grade factors can be removed from cumulative GPA once the repeat qualifies and is processed.

The repeat must be the same University of Nebraska course and have the same or greater number of credit hours. A P or N repeat cannot be used to remove the earlier below-C grade. Some cases—including certain UNO/UNK/UNMC equivalents, cross-listed courses, variable-credit courses, older attempts, and late grade changes—need Registrar processing rather than automatic treatment.

Important: If a repeat has already been reflected in the cumulative GPA shown in MyRED, do not manually subtract the old attempt again when entering your previous GPA baseline.

Transfer courses and the UNL GPA

Transfer credit can help satisfy degree requirements without becoming part of the UNL GPA. The Registrar specifically notes that community-college grades do not apply toward the Nebraska GPA and cannot replace a low Nebraska grade. NU-system equivalents can have different repeat implications, so use the Registrar’s repeat process rather than treating every outside course the same way.

Academic warning, dismissal, and financial aid

UNL places undergraduates on Academic Warning when the term or cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. Dismissal is more complicated: the thresholds depend on attempted NU credit hours, prior cumulative GPA, semester GPA, cumulative GPA, and consecutive semesters on warning. A calculator result by itself cannot determine dismissal status.

Financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is a separate policy. Undergraduate students generally need at least a 67% completion pace and, by the fourth semester of enrollment, at least a 2.000 cumulative GPA, along with the maximum-timeframe and academic-status requirements.

Graduation and college GPA requirements

A 2.0 cumulative GPA is a common undergraduate graduation minimum across UNL colleges, but some programs impose higher GPA or course-grade requirements. Check your specific college, major, and catalog year rather than assuming the university-wide planning GPA is the only graduation standard.

Graduate students

Graduate courses use the published UNL letter-grade values for course credit rules, but the Registrar’s grading FAQ states that graduate students do not have an official GPA. This calculator profile is therefore designed for the standard undergraduate UNL GPA and should not be used to invent a graduate official GPA.

No. At UNL, both A+ and A are worth 4.00 grade points per credit hour.

Does an F count in my UNL GPA?
