How the University of Miami GPA scale works
For the standard undergraduate University of Miami GPA, each letter grade earns quality points per credit hour. Your GPA is total quality points divided by total credit hours attempted for GPA.

Important: At UM, A+ is worth 4.00, not more than 4.00. F, XF, IE, and IF carry zero quality points while their GPA-attempted credits count under the university’s published rules.
CR earns credit without quality points and does not enter the UM GPA. NC, I, IP, W, and NG also do not enter the GPA while they have those symbols.
How to calculate your UM GPA
Multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by its grade value, add the quality points, then divide by the GPA-attempted credit hours.
UM GPA = total quality points / total GPA-attempted credit hours
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 quality points and a 3-credit B+ earns 9.9. Together, that is 21.9 quality points across 6 attempted credits, for a GPA of 3.650.
If you already have a cumulative GPA, enter both your previous GPA and the matching GPA-attempted credits. A rounded GPA without its correct attempted-credit total can make a projection less accurate.
Which grades do not count in the UM GPA?

An NG that is not resolved can later change under university policy, so calculate with the final posted grade once it appears.
How repeated courses affect your University of Miami GPA
UM has more than one repeat rule, so the repeat result depends on which rule applies.
Repeat Rule warning: The calculator’s Repeat Impact tool is only for a course that qualifies for the Undergraduate Repeat Rule and for which you elect that rule. Do not use the replacement estimate for an ordinary General Repeat Rule case.
Under the Undergraduate Repeat Rule, an undergraduate may elect to repeat up to two UM courses originally graded D, D+, or F. The repeat must be the same UM course, may be repeated only once under this rule, and must be completed within two regular semesters enrolled after the original course. When the rule applies, only the second grade is used in the UM CGPA calculation, even if the second grade is the same or lower. The first grade remains on the transcript. An XF from an academic-integrity violation is not eligible for this rule.
Under the General Repeat Rule, qualifying repeats can instead leave both the original and repeat grades in the CGPA. Schools and programs may add their own repeat restrictions, so confirm eligibility before treating a repeat as grade replacement.
Repeat example
Suppose an eligible 3-credit course originally has a D, worth 3 quality points. If the approved Undergraduate Repeat Rule repeat earns an A, the replacement estimate uses 12 quality points for that course instead of 3. The calculator can estimate the GPA effect, but it cannot decide whether your repeat request satisfies every timing, course, school, or filing requirement.
Do transfer grades count in the University of Miami GPA?
Accepted transfer courses can count toward degree credit, but their grades and quality points do not enter the standard UM cumulative GPA. Undergraduate transfer courses generally need a C or higher to be eligible for transfer credit, subject to the university’s other transfer requirements.
There is an important exception for University Graduation Honors: UM compares the UM cumulative graduation GPA with a combined GPA that includes graded work taken at UM and elsewhere, and uses the lower result for Latin-honors eligibility. That honors calculation is different from the ordinary UM institutional GPA shown by this calculator.
Academic standing and GPA requirements
UM’s academic-standing thresholds are not one universal 2.0 cutoff for every undergraduate at every point in the degree.

Academic dismissal has additional rules, including continued probation and very low CGPA conditions. Individual schools and programs can impose higher progression or graduation requirements, so use your degree audit and school policies for program decisions.
Graduation honors use a different GPA test
Latin Honors thresholds are set separately by school or college and change each academic year based on the prior graduating class. UM awards Summa Cum Laude to the top 5% within each school or college, Magna Cum Laude to the next 10%, and Cum Laude to the next 10%, subject to the published GPA criteria.
For honors, the GPA is not rounded and UM uses the lower of the UM cumulative graduation GPA or the combined average of graded work completed at UM and elsewhere. Because that is not the same as the standard UM institutional GPA, this calculator does not claim to determine Latin-honors eligibility.
Graduate and professional students
Graduate students use the same published A-through-F quality-point values, but graduate academic rules differ: a B average (3.0) is required for a graduate degree, transfer credits do not enter the UM graduate GPA, and graduate repeat treatment does not use the standard undergraduate replacement rule. Law, medicine, Miami Herbert graduate programs, and other professional programs can have separate grading or progression policies.

Is an A+ a 4.3 at the University of Miami?
No. For the standard UM GPA, both A+ and A are worth 4.00 quality points per credit hour.
Does an F count in my UM GPA?
Yes. An F is worth 0.00 quality points, and its attempted credit hours count in the GPA denominator.
Does an XF count in GPA?
Yes. XF is a zero-point failure for GPA purposes. It also cannot be retaken under the Undergraduate Repeat Rule when the failure resulted from an academic-integrity violation.
Does CR/NC affect my GPA?
CR and NC do not enter the University of Miami GPA. CR can award earned credit, while NC awards no credit.
Do transfer grades change my UM cumulative GPA?
No. Accepted transfer grades do not enter the standard UM cumulative GPA. They can matter in the separate combined-GPA calculation used for University Graduation Honors.
Can I replace a D or F by repeating the course?
Possibly. The Undergraduate Repeat Rule can replace the original GPA effect for up to two eligible UM courses originally graded D, D+, or F, but timing, same-course, one-repeat, and other restrictions apply. Other repeats can fall under the General Repeat Rule and may count both grades.
What GPA do I need to graduate from the University of Miami?
The university-wide bachelor’s baseline requires a C average, or 2.0, both overall and for work completed at UM. Your school, college, major, or program may require a higher GPA or additional grade thresholds.
What GPA is required for financial aid SAP?
For undergraduate federal and institutional need-based aid, UM publishes a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, a 67% credit-completion rate, and a maximum-timeframe standard. Merit and state aid have separate renewal rules.
What GPA does a transfer applicant need?
UM’s current undergraduate bulletin states that transfer candidates need at least a 2.0 GPA to be eligible for review, while competitive candidates are expected to be well above that minimum. This admissions GPA is separate from the GPA of an enrolled UM student.
