University of Houston GPA Calculator

Use this University of Houston GPA calculator to estimate your UH undergraduate GPA on the university’s 4.0 plus/minus scale. It supports current and cumulative GPA, planned-course projections, and target GPA planning. It also handles non-GPA grades and transfer work correctly, while keeping UH’s conditional first-year grade exclusion separate from ordinary repeated-course calculations.

How the University of Houston GPA scale works

UH calculates GPA by multiplying each GPA-bearing course’s semester credit hours by its grade-point value, adding the grade points, and dividing by the GPA-bearing semester hours.

GradeGrade points
A4.00
A-3.67
B+3.33
B3.00
B-2.67
C+2.33
C2.00
C-1.67
D+1.33
D1.00
D-0.67
F0.00

Grades such as S, U, I, and W do not carry grade-point values in the standard UH GPA calculation. An F does carry a value: zero points, with its GPA-bearing hours still included.

Important: This calculator is for the standard UH undergraduate institutional GPA. Transfer-admission GPA, graduate/professional GPA, financial-aid SAP, and some college or program calculations are separate.

How to calculate your UH GPA

For each GPA-bearing course, multiply the credit hours by the grade points. Add those course points, then divide by the total GPA-bearing credit hours.

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.00 grade points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.99. Together, that is 21.99 grade points over 6 hours, for a GPA of 3.665.

If you already have a cumulative GPA, enter your previous GPA and the GPA-bearing hours behind it. The calculator combines that baseline with the completed courses you add. Planned courses can then show a projected GPA, and the target tool can estimate the average you would need over future hours.

What happens when you repeat a course at UH?

An ordinary repeated UH course does not automatically erase the earlier grade. Both attempts normally remain part of the cumulative GPA calculation.

UH also has a separate First Year Grade Exclusion policy. Eligible students who entered UH in Fall 2018 or later may apply to exclude an original D+ or lower after meeting specific requirements, including timing, course-level, repeat-at-UH, quantity, and academic-honesty rules.

Calculator limitation: The calculator does not decide whether you qualify for grade exclusion. Enter ordinary repeat attempts separately. Use the “original UH attempt with approved first-year grade exclusion” course type only after UH has approved that exclusion.

Grade exclusion changes the cumulative GPA treatment of the approved original grade, but it does not retroactively undo academic or financial-aid actions that resulted from the earlier grade or semester GPA.

Do transfer grades count in your UH GPA?

No. Transfer credit can count toward your degree when accepted, but transfer grades do not become part of your UH institutional GPA. In the calculator, use the transfer/external course type when you need to record that distinction without adding the grade to the UH GPA.

UH does calculate a separate transfer GPA for admission. For applicants with at least 15 college-level hours, current admissions information lists a 2.50 cumulative transferable GPA for assured admission and 2.25–2.49 for individual review. That admissions calculation is not your enrolled-student UH GPA.

GPA and financial aid at UH

Financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is a separate eligibility calculation. Current UH standards require undergraduates to maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, complete at least 67% of attempted hours, and remain within the maximum timeframe.

Do not use the calculator alone to decide financial-aid eligibility. SAP has rules about attempted and completed hours that are different from the ordinary GPA denominator, and grade exclusion does not necessarily erase the original attempt for aid purposes.

Dean’s List and other GPA requirements

Dean’s List requirements can vary by college. Current UH college pages commonly use a 3.50 semester GPA and minimum enrolled/completed hours, with additional restrictions on grades such as I, D, F, or U. Check your own college’s current criteria rather than treating 3.50 as the only requirement.

Major admission, progression, scholarships, honors, graduation, and professional programs may also use GPA rules that differ from the general institutional calculation.

University of Houston GPA FAQs

Does UH use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. Standard undergraduate UH GPA uses a 4.0 scale with plus/minus values, including A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, and D- = 0.67.

Does an F count in my UH GPA?

Yes. An F is worth 0.00 grade points, so its GPA-bearing credit hours remain in the denominator while it adds no grade points.

Do S, U, I, and W count in the GPA?

They do not receive grade-point values in the standard UH GPA calculation. An incomplete is temporary, so use the final grade after it is resolved.

If I retake a class, does UH replace the old grade?

Not automatically. Ordinary repeats count as additional attempts. A separate first-year grade-exclusion policy can remove an eligible original grade from cumulative GPA only when its conditions are met and the exclusion is approved.

Who can use UH first-year grade exclusion?

The policy applies to eligible students who entered UH in Fall 2018 or later and meet all of the university’s requirements, including an original D+ or lower during the first 12 months, eligible course level, a timely UH repeat, course limits, and no disqualifying academic-honesty violation. Approval is not automatic.

Do transfer grades affect my UH GPA?

No. Accepted transfer credit can apply toward degree requirements, but transfer grades do not enter the UH institutional GPA. UH may separately calculate a transfer GPA for admission.

What GPA do I need for financial aid at UH?

Current undergraduate SAP standards require at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, along with a 67% completion rate and maximum-timeframe requirement. Financial-aid eligibility is not determined by GPA alone.

What GPA do I need for the Dean’s List?

Requirements depend on the college. Several current UH colleges use a 3.50 semester GPA with minimum hours and additional grade restrictions, so verify the rules for your college and term.
