How UMass Amherst calculates GPA

UMass Amherst calculates GPA by multiplying each GPA-bearing course’s credits by its grade-point value, adding those grade points, and dividing by the total graded credits. The official calculation is rounded to the nearest thousandth.

Formula: GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing credits.

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 grade points and a 4-credit B+ earns 13.2. Together, 25.2 grade points ÷ 7 credits = a 3.600 GPA.

Which grades count in your UMass GPA?

F counts in GPA with zero grade points, so its credits remain in the denominator. For undergraduates, an INC also counts as zero until it is resolved; if it remains unresolved past the deadline, it becomes IF and continues to carry zero points.

Grades such as P, NR, Y, AUD, and W do not affect the cumulative GPA. If your transcript has a temporary or unusual notation, use the notation actually recorded in SPIRE rather than guessing the eventual grade.

Important: An unresolved undergraduate INC can lower the GPA because UMass counts it as an F until it is resolved.

How Pass/Fail affects GPA

Elective Pass/Fail at UMass Amherst is unusual because the instructor still submits a letter grade. An F always remains an F and counts as 0.0. For a passing grade, the Registrar can record the letter grade when it improves the cumulative average; otherwise P can be recorded, and P does not enter GPA.

For the calculator, enter the grade that is actually shown on your academic record. Do not assume every course elected Pass/Fail will ultimately appear as P.

Repeating a course at UMass Amherst

Undergraduates may ordinarily repeat a course once without permission when the original grade was C-, D+, D, or F. All attempts remain visible on the transcript, but the last grade normally replaces the earlier grade in the GPA calculation.

The calculator’s Repeat Impact tool is intended for a straightforward same-credit UMass Amherst repeat. A third attempt requires prior approval from your undergraduate dean, and repeating an Amherst course at a Five College school, another UMass campus, or another institution does not produce Amherst grade substitution.

Repeat warning: A lower repeat grade can make your GPA worse because the last grade is the one normally calculated. Academic-honesty sanctions and approved exceptions can also change the usual treatment.

Do transfer grades count toward UMass Amherst GPA?

No. Accepted transfer credits can help satisfy degree requirements, but grades from other institutions do not enter the UMass Amherst cumulative GPA. UMass generally requires at least a C- for college coursework to transfer, subject to university and department rules.

This is different from Five College Interchange work, whose grades and credits are included in the Amherst undergraduate record.

Fresh Start and older UMass records

Eligible students returning after an absence of at least three years may choose Fresh Start, which can exclude prior Amherst work from the cumulative GPA while leaving that work visible on the transcript. Because eligibility and the resulting record are determined officially, this calculator does not reconstruct a Fresh Start GPA from old courses.

Does UMass Amherst use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. Current undergraduate courses use a 4.0 scale with A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and F = 0.0.

Does an incomplete affect GPA at UMass Amherst?

For undergraduates, yes while it is unresolved. INC is counted as an F for GPA purposes until a final grade replaces it, and an unresolved incomplete later becomes IF.

Does a P grade affect UMass GPA?

No. A recorded P carries no quality points and does not enter the cumulative GPA. An F earned in a Pass/Fail course still counts as 0.0.

Does repeating a class replace the old grade?
