How to use the UIUC GPA calculator
Enter your previous Illinois GPA and its GPA-bearing semester hours if you already have a cumulative GPA. Then add completed Illinois courses with their semester hours and final grades. You can also add planned courses to estimate a projected GPA or set a target GPA to see the average you would need over future hours.
Calculator limitation: This profile is designed for the standard undergraduate Illinois GPA. Transfer/overall GPA calculations and Illinois grade replacement require additional record-specific rules, so those situations should be checked against your official record and current university policy.
UIUC grade scale
Illinois uses a four-point grading system with plus and minus grades. A+ does not exceed 4.00.

Credit/no-credit and other non-point symbols such as CR, NC, S, U, PS, PP, NP, PZ, PX, and W do not receive grade points and are not included in the GPA. Temporary symbols such as I, DFR, NR, and NV should not be treated as final GPA grades while they remain unresolved.
How Illinois calculates GPA
For GPA-bearing courses, multiply each course’s semester hours by the grade-point value, add the grade points, and divide by the total GPA-bearing semester hours.
GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing semester hours
For example, a 3-hour A earns 12.00 grade points and a 4-hour B+ earns 13.32. Together, that is 25.32 grade points over 7 hours, for an estimated GPA of 3.617.
Repeated courses and grade replacement
An ordinary undergraduate repeat generally leaves both the original and later grade in the GPA, while course credit is counted once when the course applies toward graduation. Illinois also has a campus grade-replacement option for eligible undergraduates, but it is not automatic.
Important: Grade replacement is limited to eligible courses and requires the student to file an election during the first half of the repeat term. The policy is limited to four distinct courses and no more than 10 semester hours, and the first grade generally must be C−, D+, D, D−, or F. Failed replacement attempts and other exceptions can cause both grades to count.
Because those conditions cannot be inferred from course grades alone, the calculator does not offer a UIUC Repeat Impact estimate. If an approved replacement has already been processed, use the recalculated GPA on your Illinois academic record as your baseline.
Transfer GPA and overall GPA
Illinois students with transfer coursework can have three different GPAs: an Illinois GPA for Illinois coursework, a transfer GPA for transfer coursework, and an overall GPA combining applicable work. Transferable grades are not simply discarded because another institution used grade forgiveness or replacement.
This calculator’s main record estimates the Illinois GPA. Do not mix transfer grades into that record unless you are deliberately reconstructing a separate overall GPA from the grades and hours Illinois recognizes.
Academic standing, graduation, and financial aid
These rules use related but distinct GPA concepts, so a calculator result by itself does not determine your status.

Dean’s List and University Honors
Dean’s List is not based on one permanent campus-wide GPA cutoff. Each college sets a semester GPA level that identifies approximately the top 20% of eligible students, and students generally need at least 12 semester hours taken for letter grades.
For students graduating through Spring 2030, Bronze Tablet University Honors requires at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA through the term before graduation plus placement in the top 3% of the college graduating class, with additional transfer-student rules. Illinois has already approved a different Bronze Tablet standard beginning with students graduating Summer 2030 and later, so students in that future cohort should use the policy that applies to their graduation date.
UIUC GPA FAQs
Is an A+ worth more than an A at UIUC?
No. Both A+ and A are worth 4.00 grade points per semester hour.
Does a D- count in the UIUC GPA?
Yes. A D- is worth 0.67 grade points per semester hour under the standard Illinois scale.
Does an F count in the GPA?
Yes. An F contributes zero grade points, but its GPA-bearing semester hours remain in the calculation.
Do CR, NC, S, U, or W affect GPA?
They do not receive grade points and are excluded from the GPA calculation. They can still matter for credit, progress, degree requirements, or financial-aid pace.
Does repeating a class automatically replace the first grade?
No. Without an approved grade-replacement election, ordinary repeat rules generally count both grades. Grade replacement has eligibility, filing, course/hour limits, and outcome-specific exceptions.
Do transfer grades count in my UIUC GPA?
Not in the Illinois-only GPA. Illinois separately reports an Illinois GPA, transfer GPA, and overall GPA for students with transfer work.
What GPA puts an undergraduate on Academic Warning?
A semester GPA below 2.0 and/or cumulative GPA below 2.0 can trigger Academic Warning, and colleges or programs may impose additional academic requirements.
What GPA is required to graduate from UIUC?
The general bachelor’s rule requires at least a 2.0 average on Illinois credits counted for graduation and at least a 2.0 average on combined applicable Illinois and transfer credits. Some curricula have higher requirements, and the Student Code also describes limited alternate graduation-average methods.
What GPA is needed for the Dean’s List?
There is no single permanent UIUC Dean’s List GPA cutoff. The threshold is set by each college to identify approximately the top 20% of eligible students for that semester.
What GPA do transfer applicants need?
Transfer expectations vary by college and major rather than using one campus-wide number. Current published guidelines range by program, so applicants should check the Transfer Handbook and current admissions requirements for their intended major.
