How University of Delaware GPA is calculated
UD calculates GPA from quality points divided by GPA-bearing quality hours. Multiply each course’s credits by the quality-point value of the final grade, add those quality points, and divide by the credits attached to grades that count in the GPA.
| Grade | Quality points per credit |
|---|---|
| A | 4.000 |
| A- | 3.667 |
| B+ | 3.333 |
| B | 3.000 |
| B- | 2.667 |
| C+ | 2.333 |
| C | 2.000 |
| C- | 1.667 |
| D+ | 1.333 |
| D | 1.000 |
| D- | 0.667 |
| F | 0.000 |
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.000 quality points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.999. Together, those courses produce 21.999 quality points over 6 GPA credits, or about a 3.667 GPA.
Which UD grades count in GPA?
Standard A-through-F letter grades count in the GPA. An F contributes zero quality points but its credits still remain in the GPA denominator. The X academic-dishonesty failure also carries zero quality points.
Several other transcript marks do not work like ordinary letter grades. P is excluded from the GPA index. W, listener marks, accepted transfer credit, and test credit do not carry UD GPA quality points. Temporary grades such as I, S, U, and N should be replaced with the final grade when the record is resolved.
Historical note: Z was a zero-point unofficial-withdrawal grade through August 2024. UD removed Z from the grading system effective Fall 2024, so current failing/nonparticipation situations follow the current Registrar grading rules.
Do transfer grades count toward your UD GPA?
No. Accepted undergraduate transfer courses can add credit toward a UD degree, but the grades from the other institution are not included in the University of Delaware GPA. Test credit is also excluded from the UD GPA.
That distinction matters when entering a previous GPA. Use your UD GPA and its GPA-bearing UD credits rather than combining outside grades into the baseline.
How repeated courses and grade forgiveness work
UD has an undergraduate grade forgiveness policy, but it is not automatic. Qualifying students can request to have the lowest repeated grade excluded from GPA after the repeat grade is posted.
Eligibility is limited. Among the main conditions, the original course must have been taken through the term in which you reach 28 attempted UD credits, the original grade must be C- or lower, you must repeat the same UD course and earn a higher grade, and the repeated attempt must be Fall 2019 or later. Forgiveness is limited to a total of 8 credits and other restrictions apply.
Calculator limitation: The Repeat Impact tool is disabled for UD because it cannot determine whether your course is actually eligible or whether forgiveness has been requested and approved. Until forgiveness is confirmed on your record, do not simply delete an attempt from your GPA history.
Project your future University of Delaware GPA
To estimate a projected GPA, enter your current UD GPA and the GPA-bearing credits behind it, then add completed or planned courses. Planned courses let you test different grade combinations without changing your official record.
A projection is only as accurate as the baseline you enter. If your current GPA already reflects approved grade forgiveness, use the GPA and quality hours shown in your current UD record rather than reconstructing an older version of the record.
Plan for a target GPA
The target tool estimates the average grade points per credit you would need over a chosen number of future credits. Because UD’s maximum standard grade value is 4.000, a required future average above 4.000 means the target cannot be reached within the number of credits you entered.
This is a planning estimate, not an academic-standing decision. Course repeats, forgiveness, program requirements, and future changes to your record can change the official result.
GPA requirements students commonly confuse
| Purpose | Current UD context |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate good standing | Generally requires at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA |
| Undergraduate graduation | At least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, with program requirements also applying |
| Graduate degree | Graduate students generally need at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA |
| Dean’s List | Current advising guidance uses a 3.5 semester GPA plus eligibility conditions |
| Many UD merit scholarship renewals | Generally require a 3.0 cumulative GPA plus credit requirements; your aid notice controls |
| Latin honors | Cutoffs are published annually and differ by undergraduate college |
Do not use one of these thresholds as a substitute for another. Academic standing, graduation, financial aid, scholarships, honors, and graduate study are separate policies even when they use GPA.
University of Delaware GPA calculator FAQs
Does the University of Delaware use a 4.0 GPA scale?
Yes. UD’s standard grading system uses a 4.0 maximum with plus/minus values such as A-=3.667, B+=3.333, and B-=2.667.
Does an A+ give more than 4.0 at UD?
The current Registrar grading scale lists A as the highest standard final grade at 4.000; it does not list A+ as a separate GPA grade.
Does a pass/fail course affect my UD GPA?
A passing P does not calculate into the GPA index. A failing outcome can affect GPA according to the applicable grading basis, so use the final mark actually recorded on your UD record.
Do transfer grades change my University of Delaware GPA?
No. Accepted transfer credits may count toward degree requirements, but the outside grades do not enter the UD GPA.
If I retake a course, does the first grade automatically disappear from GPA?
No. UD grade forgiveness requires eligibility and a request after the repeat grade posts. If the course does not qualify or forgiveness is not applied, you should not assume the earlier grade is excluded.
How many credits can receive UD grade forgiveness?
The current undergraduate policy allows a maximum of 8 credits, subject to the full eligibility rules.
What GPA do I need to be in good academic standing at UD?
Undergraduate students are generally expected to maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA for good standing. Falling below 2.0 can lead to Academic Warning and, depending on later performance and review, suspension or dismissal processes.
What GPA do graduate students need at the University of Delaware?
Graduate students generally need a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to graduate, and graduate academic-standing rules are separate from the undergraduate calculator profile on this page.
