How the University of Rochester GPA works
For College undergraduates, Rochester multiplies each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by its grade-point value, adds those grade points, and divides by the total GPA-bearing credit hours. An E or XE contributes zero grade points but still counts the course’s credit hours in the GPA denominator.
Important: This calculator is for the College undergraduate grading system used in Arts & Sciences, Hajim, and undergraduate Simon coursework. SAS/Hajim graduate programs use different grading rules and do not issue an official GPA.
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| E / XE | 0.0 |
Hajim note: Hajim courses do not use D+ or D-. Select the Hajim course type in the calculator so those grades are not offered.
Which grades count in your Rochester GPA?
Normal letter grades A through E count in the undergraduate cumulative average. XE also carries zero grade points. Grades such as S, F under the S/F option, P, W, and credit/no-credit notations do not add grade points to the cumulative average; incomplete or missing grades should not be treated as final grades until resolved.
External transfer grades are also excluded. Rochester may award transfer credit for approved outside coursework, but the grade from the other school does not become part of your University of Rochester GPA.
GPA formula and example
Use this formula:
GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing credit hours
For example, a 4-credit A earns 16.0 grade points and a 4-credit B+ earns 13.2. Together, that is 29.2 grade points over 8 credit hours, for a GPA of 3.650.
If you enter a previous cumulative GPA and previous GPA-bearing credits, the calculator converts that baseline into estimated grade points before adding your new Rochester courses. Because a displayed cumulative GPA may already be rounded, a planning result can differ slightly from the official record.
Repeating a course at Rochester
For the standard policy covering courses first taken in fall 2014 or later, a student may repeat a course for a new grade after an original C-, D+, D, or E. Hajim does not use D+, so that option does not apply to Hajim courses.
When an eligible course is repeated at Rochester, the second grade replaces the first grade in the GPA even if the second grade is lower. Both attempts remain on the transcript, and course credit is earned only once.
Calculator limitation: Use Repeat Impact only for an eligible two-attempt Rochester repeat under the current policy. Courses first taken before fall 2014 and special exceptions, including certain writing-course situations, need individual advising review.
Transfer credit and courses at other colleges
Approved outside coursework can earn Rochester transfer credit, but grades from other institutions do not enter the Rochester GPA. The same general principle applies to grades earned through Rochester-area inter-institutional registration: the outside grade is not included in the University of Rochester GPA.
This distinction matters when planning your cumulative GPA. Do not enter an external transfer grade as though it were a Rochester letter grade just because the credits were accepted toward your degree.
GPA requirements students often ask about
| Purpose | Published Rochester standard |
|---|---|
| Dean’s List | Generally 3.4 semester GPA plus the published credit, letter-grade, and incomplete-grade conditions |
| College graduation | At least 2.0 overall, plus at least 2.0 in the major and required divisional clusters |
| Arts & Sciences major acceptance | Specified prerequisites with a 2.0 or higher average; departments may add requirements |
| Latin honors | Based on final cumulative GPA and class-specific cutoffs; Class of 2026 bands are 3.75–3.85 cum laude, 3.86–3.96 magna, 3.97–4.0 summa |
These standards serve different purposes. A calculator result by itself does not determine academic standing, graduation clearance, honors, financial-aid eligibility, or admission decisions.
University of Rochester GPA FAQ
Does the University of Rochester use a 4.0 GPA scale?
Yes. The College undergraduate grading system assigns A=4.0 and E/XE=0.0, with plus/minus values between them. The cumulative GPA is weighted by credit hours.
Does Rochester count an E in GPA?
Yes. An E carries 0.0 grade points, so its credit hours remain in the GPA denominator and can lower the cumulative GPA.
Does an S or F under the S/F option affect GPA?
No. Rochester’s undergraduate advising guidance says S, F, and P do not affect the cumulative point-hour ratio. Their credit and degree-requirement consequences are separate questions.
Do transfer grades count in the University of Rochester GPA?
No. Approved outside coursework may transfer as credit, but grades from other schools do not transfer into the Rochester GPA and cannot replace a Rochester grade.
If I repeat a class, does Rochester keep the better grade?
Not under the standard current repeat rule. For an eligible repeat, the second Rochester grade is the one factored into GPA, even when it is lower than the first.
Can I repeat any course to replace the grade?
No. For courses first taken in fall 2014 or later, the standard policy generally limits grade-replacement repeats to an original C-, D+, D, or E, with exceptions and special cases handled separately.
Does Hajim use D+ and D- grades?
No. The Registrar’s undergraduate grading scheme states that Hajim does not give D+ or D- grades. The calculator’s Hajim course type removes those options.
What GPA do I need for the Dean’s List at Rochester?
The general semester GPA threshold is 3.4, along with the published credit-hour, normal-letter-grade, and incomplete-grade conditions. Seniors, Take Five students, and part-time students have additional or different credit conditions.
Do Rochester graduate students use this same GPA calculator?
SAS/Hajim graduate students should not treat this undergraduate calculator as an official graduate GPA. The graduate school states that graduate programs do not calculate an official GPA because of their grading structure, although an estimate may sometimes be requested.
