Notre Dame GPA Calculator

Use this Notre Dame GPA calculator to estimate your semester or cumulative GPA on the University of Notre Dame's 4.0 scale, add planned courses for a projected GPA, and see the average you may need for a target GPA. It also reflects Notre Dame's treatment of pass/fail grades, transfer work, and repeated undergraduate courses.

How to use the Notre Dame GPA calculator

Enter your previous cumulative GPA and GPA credit hours if you want a cumulative estimate, then add completed Notre Dame courses with their semester credit hours and final grades. You can also add planned courses to see a projected GPA or use the target tool to estimate the average needed over future credits.

Important: The calculator is designed for standard undergraduate Notre Dame institutional GPA. Law uses a separate grading code, and graduate or graduate-business records can have different academic rules.

Notre Dame GPA scale

Notre Dame uses quality points per semester credit hour. The standard grade values are:

GradeQuality points
A4.000
A-3.667
B+3.333
B3.000
B-2.667
C+2.333
C2.000
C-1.667
D1.000
F0.000

The Registrar also lists X, I and F* at 0.000. Because X and I can later be resolved through a grade change, use the final posted grade when you are planning from a completed record.

Grades S, U, V, W, P and NR are not included in the GPA calculation. A W also does not count in GPA hours attempted or earned.

How Notre Dame calculates GPA

For each GPA-bearing course:

quality points for the grade x course credit hours = course quality points

Add the course quality points and divide by the total GPA credit hours attempted.

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.000 quality points and a 3-credit B earns 9.000. Together, 21.000 quality points divided by 6 GPA credits gives a 3.500 GPA.

Do repeated courses replace the old grade at Notre Dame?

No. For standard undergraduate repeats, Notre Dame includes both grades in the GPA. The transcript identifies the repeated course, while only one instance ordinarily counts toward degree requirements.

That is why this calculator does not show the shared replacement-style Repeat Impact tool. If you repeat an eligible course, enter each graded attempt as its own completed course unless an attempt is already included in the previous GPA baseline.

Repeat eligibility itself is more restrictive than the GPA math. The Undergraduate Academic Code generally allows a non-repeatable course to be repeated after a failing grade, or after a D with required approval and limits. Check with your dean before assuming a course may be repeated.

Do transfer grades count in the Notre Dame GPA?

Grades from ordinary external transfer courses do not enter the Notre Dame GPA, even when the credits are accepted toward the degree. Transfer credit generally requires approved coursework and an acceptable grade, but credit acceptance and institutional GPA treatment are separate questions.

There are important exceptions for work treated as Notre Dame coursework. Grades from University-sponsored study-away programs while the student maintains Notre Dame enrollment, and grades in the Saint Mary’s College co-exchange program, can be included in the Notre Dame GPA.

Academic standing and financial aid GPA

Do not treat every 2.0 threshold as the same rule. Undergraduate academic good standing is based on semester GPA: first-semester first-year students must earn at least 1.850, while students beyond the first semester must earn at least 2.000. The Academic Code uses warning and probation processes when those semester standards are not met.

Federal financial-aid satisfactory academic progress uses a different test. Undergraduate students need at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA, must complete at least 67% of cumulative attempted hours, and must remain within the federal maximum timeframe.

Dean’s List and Latin honors

Notre Dame’s Dean’s List does not use one permanent university-wide GPA cutoff. An undergraduate needs at least 12 graded credit hours and must meet the current cutoff for the student’s college or school. The published thresholds are designed around the top 30% of students in each college or school and can change by academic year.

Latin honors are also percentile-based by college or school. Cum laude corresponds to the top 30%, magna cum laude to the top 15%, and summa cum laude to the top 5%. The Registrar determines annual GPA cutoffs to the third decimal and does not round a student’s GPA up to meet a cutoff.

Notre Dame admission GPA context

Notre Dame states that there is no minimum GPA required for first-year admission because high schools use different grading systems and methods. For transfer applicants, Notre Dame says recent admitted students have averaged a college GPA of 3.75 or higher; that is competitive-admission context, not a guaranteed admission threshold or a rule for calculating an enrolled student’s Notre Dame GPA.

Notre Dame GPA FAQs

Does Notre Dame use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. Standard Notre Dame grades use a 4.000 maximum, with A- at 3.667, B+ at 3.333, B- at 2.667, C+ at 2.333 and C- at 1.667.

Does Notre Dame have an A+ grade worth more than 4.0?

The current Registrar grading scale does not list A+ as a separate GPA grade. A is 4.000.

Does a pass/fail course affect my Notre Dame GPA?

A P is excluded from the GPA calculation. Pass/fail courses also do not count as graded credits for Dean’s List eligibility.

Does a W lower my Notre Dame GPA?

No. A W is not included in GPA hours attempted or earned, so it does not directly change the GPA calculation.

If I repeat a class, does Notre Dame replace my first grade?

No. Both undergraduate grades are included in GPA. Repeat eligibility and degree-credit rules are separate, so confirm the repeat with your dean.

Do community college or other transfer grades count in my Notre Dame GPA?

Ordinary external transfer grades do not enter the Notre Dame GPA. Accepted transfer credits can still apply toward degree requirements.

What GPA do I need for the Dean’s List at Notre Dame?

There is no single permanent cutoff. You need at least 12 graded credits and the published semester GPA cutoff for your college or school.

What GPA do I need to stay in good academic standing?

For undergraduates, the semester standard is at least 1.850 in the first semester and 2.000 after the first semester. Academic warning and probation rules add context beyond the number alone.
