Michigan Tech GPA Calculator

Michigan Technological University uses a 4.0 GPA scale with half-step
grades such as AB, BC, and CD. Use this Michigan Tech GPA calculator to
estimate your current or cumulative GPA, project future grades, set a
target GPA, and model an ordinary eligible repeat where the most recent
final grade replaces the earlier attempt.

How to use the Michigan Tech GPA calculator

Enter your previous GPA and previous GPA credits if you already have a
cumulative baseline, then add your completed Michigan Tech courses with
their credits and final grades. You can also add planned courses to
estimate a projected GPA or use the target tool to see the average you
would need over a future number of credits.

Important: Michigan Tech says its official GPA is calculated by
dividing grade points by grade-point hours and truncating the
result. The calculator displays three decimals for planning, so use
your official Michigan Tech record for decisions near a cutoff.

Michigan Tech GPA scale

Grade Grade points per credit Counts in GPA?

A 4.00 Yes
AB 3.50 Yes
B 3.00 Yes
BC 2.50 Yes
C 2.00 Yes
CD 1.50 Yes
D 1.00 Yes
F 0.00 Yes
F* 0.00 Yes
X 0.00 while conditional Yes

Michigan Tech does not use the common A-/B+/B- sequence for its standard
point scale. The half-step grades AB, BC, and CD are the important
distinctions.

Which Michigan Tech grades do not count in GPA?

Several transcript marks carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA
while they remain in that status. These include I, IS, M, N, P, Q, W,
CR, S, E, E*, V, U, U*, SCV, LCV, and ECV.

Two temporary grades deserve special attention. An I is not included
while incomplete, but it converts to F if it is not completed within the
required time; an I remaining at graduation is treated as F for the
final GPA. An X, by contrast, is already computed as an F while it
is unresolved and therefore contributes zero grade points with its
credits in the GPA denominator.

How Michigan Tech calculates GPA

Michigan Tech GPA is credit-weighted:

GPA = total grade points ÷ total grade-point hours

For each point-bearing course, multiply course credits by the grade
value. A 3-credit A contributes 12 grade points, while a 4-credit AB
contributes 14. Together those courses produce 26 grade points over 7
grade-point hours, or about 3.714 in this calculator’s planning display.

Quick answer: An F and an unresolved X both contribute 0 grade
points
, but their credits still count as grade-point hours. That is
different from S, E, W, I, and other excluded marks, which do not
enter the GPA calculation while they remain in those statuses.

Repeating a course at Michigan Tech

For an ordinary eligible repeat, Michigan Tech uses the most recent
grade
to calculate GPA, credits earned toward graduation, and class
standing. The earlier attempt remains visible on the transcript but is
excluded from those calculations. This rule can lower your GPA if your
newest grade is worse than the earlier one.

The calculator’s Repeat Impact tool is appropriate only for a
straightforward two-attempt repeat with the same credits and final
point-bearing grades. A W or I does not replace the previous grade. A
third attempt requires permission from the Dean of Students Office and
academic advisor, and repeating a course in which you already earned C
or higher requires an advisor repeat waiver. Courses repeatable for
credit and approved “similar repeats” need individual review.

Transfer credit and Michigan Tech GPA

Transfer credit can help satisfy degree requirements, but the external
grade does not transfer into the Michigan Tech University or
departmental GPA. Michigan Tech generally evaluates transfer courses
completed with C (2.0) or better, but acceptance of the credit and
inclusion in GPA are separate questions.

If you are entering transfer work in this calculator, choose the
approved external transfer course type so its credits and grade are
excluded from the Michigan Tech GPA estimate.

Academic Renewal

Michigan Tech has an Academic Renewal option for certain undergraduate
students returning after an absence of at least five years. If renewal
is officially granted, all courses in the elected renewal terms are
excluded from the University GPA and no course credit is granted for
those terms.

Do not remove old coursework from a GPA estimate merely because you plan
to request Academic Renewal. Use the renewal course type only after the
University has officially granted it.

eligibility.

Graduate GPA at Michigan Tech

Graduate students use Michigan Tech’s institutional point scale, but
graduate academic standards are different from undergraduate standards.
The Graduate School requires a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.0
for good standing, along with satisfactory research progress, continuous
enrollment, and required exams. Graduate degree-schedule coursework also
has separate grade standards, so graduate students should check their
program and Graduate School rules before treating a projected GPA as a
degree-eligibility decision.

Michigan Tech GPA FAQs

Does Michigan Tech use plus and minus grades?

No standard A-/B+/B- point sequence is used in the published Michigan
Tech grading scale. Instead, the point-bearing sequence includes A, AB,
B, BC, C, CD, D, and F.

Is AB a 3.5 at Michigan Tech?

Yes. AB is worth 3.50 grade points per credit. BC is 2.50 and CD is
1.50.

Does an X hurt my Michigan Tech GPA?

Yes, while it remains an X. Michigan Tech computes a conditional X as an
F, so it contributes zero grade points while its credits remain in the
GPA denominator. If the required work is completed, the X is changed to
the grade earned.

Does an S or E grade affect GPA?

No. Under the pass/fail option, both S and E carry no grade points and
are excluded from GPA, although their credit/degree consequences differ.

If I repeat a class, does Michigan Tech average both grades?

No. For an ordinary repeat, the most recent grade replaces the previous
grade in GPA, earned-credit, and class-standing calculations. The newer
grade controls even if it is lower.

Do transfer grades count in Michigan Tech GPA?

No. Accepted transfer credit is recorded, but transfer grades and
transfer GPAs are not used in the University or departmental GPA.

What GPA do I need to graduate from Michigan Tech?

For an undergraduate baccalaureate or associate degree, Michigan Tech
requires at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA and at least a 2.00 GPA in the
designated major department. Individual programs, minors, certificates,
or other requirements can add conditions.

Is a 3.0 GPA required for Michigan Tech admission?

Michigan Tech’s current first-year admissions page does not state 3.0 as
a universal admission minimum. It uses the GPA reported by the high
school, and applicants below 3.0 may be asked for test scores or other
documentation. Transfer admission is different: the published minimum
cumulative college GPA is major-specific at 2.5 or 2.75.
