How Iowa State calculates GPA
Iowa State calculates GPA by dividing the quality points you earn by the GPA-bearing credits you attempt at Iowa State. For a normal graded course, multiply the course credits by the grade’s quality-point value, add those quality points across your courses, then divide by the total GPA credits.

Iowa State GPA formula
The basic formula is:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA credits
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.00 quality points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.99. Together, those courses produce 21.99 quality points over 6 GPA credits, for a GPA of 3.665.

How repeated courses affect your Iowa State GPA
Iowa State generally uses the most recent ISU attempt of a repeated course in the cumulative GPA instead of the previous attempt or attempts, up to an 18-credit designated-repeat limit. A newer grade can therefore raise or lower your GPA. All attempts remain on the academic record.

Repeating an Iowa State course at another institution does not replace the Iowa State grade in your ISU cumulative GPA. If the course number or credits changed, check the Registrar’s repeat-designation process before relying on an estimate.
Do transfer grades count in the Iowa State GPA?
