How to Use the Tufts GPA Calculator

Enter each completed Tufts course with its semester-hour units (SHUs) and final grade. If you already have a cumulative GPA, you can enter that GPA with the matching GPA-bearing SHUs, then add newer courses without rebuilding your entire transcript.

Important: This calculator is for Tufts undergraduate Arts & Sciences and Engineering GPA planning. Tufts does not compute an official GPA for Graduate School of Arts and Sciences or graduate School of Engineering records, and Tufts professional schools can use different rules.

Tufts GPA Scale

Tufts uses a 4.0 undergraduate scale and weights grades by semester-hour units. A+ is capped at 4.00, while plus and minus grades use 0.333-point steps.

Tufts multiplies each grade value by the course’s SHUs, adds the quality points, and divides by the total GPA-bearing SHUs. The university computes the average to three decimal places and reports semester and cumulative GPAs rounded to two decimal places.

Pass/Fail matters: A Pass does not affect your GPA, but an F in a course taken Pass/Fail is averaged into your GPA.

SMFA Studio Courses

BFA studio courses use CR/NC grading, and those grades do not affect GPA. Letter-graded non-studio undergraduate courses can use the standard Tufts undergraduate scale.

How Tufts Calculates GPA

Suppose you earn an A- in a 3-SHU course and a B+ in a 4-SHU course.

24.333 ÷ 7 = 3.476. Using Tufts’ reported precision, that semester GPA is 3.48.

An F works differently from an excluded grade. A 3-SHU F adds zero quality points but still adds 3 SHUs to the GPA denominator, so it can lower the GPA substantially.

Repeating a Course at Tufts

Tufts does not use a simple grade-replacement rule for ordinary undergraduate repeats. The effect depends on the first grade and whether the course is repeatable for credit.

Calculator limitation: Repeat Impact is disabled for Tufts because a single replacement formula would give incorrect results. Check the duplicate-course policy before entering a repeated course. For an F or D-range repeat that Tufts counts in GPA, both counted attempts can be entered as separate completed rows.

Transfer Credit and Study Abroad

Approved coursework from another undergraduate institution can earn Tufts credit with the required approval and a qualifying grade, but the external grade does not enter the Tufts GPA. The same general exclusion applies to approved external study-abroad programs.

Tufts Programs abroad are different: their grades appear on the Tufts transcript, calculate into the Tufts GPA, and can count toward Latin honors. Choose the Tufts Program abroad course type in the calculator when that treatment applies.

Academic Standing and Financial Aid

A GPA number can have different meanings depending on the policy. Do not use a calculator result alone to decide academic standing, aid eligibility, or graduation status.

For Arts & Sciences BA/BS students, satisfactory semester progress includes a term GPA of at least 2.0 along with the applicable credit requirements. Engineering academic probation can also be triggered by a term GPA below 2.0, low earned credits, or insufficient progress toward the degree. The faculty Committee on Academic Standing reviews student status.

For undergraduate federal and state financial aid, Tufts publishes a 2.00 cumulative GPA requirement together with separate pace requirements. Passing the GPA test alone does not establish satisfactory academic progress for aid.

Dean’s List and Latin Honors

Dean’s List rules differ by undergraduate school. Arts & Sciences BA/BS students generally need at least a 3.4 semester GPA plus the required graded course load and no incomplete work. Engineering students generally need at least a 3.2 semester GPA plus their required enrollment and letter-graded load.

Latin honors also use school-specific rules. Engineering lists GPA thresholds of 3.20 for cum laude, 3.50 for magna cum laude, and 3.80 for summa cum laude, subject to faculty approval and other conditions. Arts & Sciences lists 3.50, 3.65, and 3.80 respectively, with additional major-grade, recommendation, and conduct requirements depending on the honor.

Does an A+ give you more than a 4.0 at Tufts?

No. Tufts caps A+ at 4.00 for undergraduate GPA calculations.

What is an A- worth at Tufts?

An A- is worth 3.667 grade points per semester-hour unit. A B+ is 3.333, and the same 0.333 step pattern applies through the D range.

Does Pass/Fail affect your Tufts GPA?

A Pass does not affect your GPA. A failing grade under Pass/Fail is averaged into the GPA at zero grade points.

Does an F count in the Tufts GPA denominator?

Yes. An F earns zero quality points but its semester-hour units remain in the GPA calculation, even though those hours do not count toward graduation credit.

Does Tufts replace a bad grade when you repeat a course?

Not generally. F and D-range repeats can leave both grades in the cumulative GPA, while a repeat after C- or better generally does not add the later grade to the cumulative average for a non-repeatable course.

Do transfer grades count toward the Tufts GPA?

Approved external transfer grades do not calculate into the Tufts GPA. Transfer credit can still apply toward the degree when Tufts approves it.

Do study-abroad grades count toward the Tufts GPA?

It depends on the program. Tufts Programs abroad post grades that calculate into the Tufts GPA, while approved external-program grades generally do not.

Do Tufts graduate students have an official GPA?

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and graduate School of Engineering transcripts do not compute an official GPA. Graduate and professional programs also have different academic standards, so this undergraduate calculator should not be used as an official graduate GPA calculator.
