A+ does not raise the scale above 4.0. UMD assigns both A+ and A a value of 4.0 quality points per credit.

Which UMD grades count in GPA?

P, S, I, W, and NGR are not included in the GPA calculation. F and XF are different: they contribute zero quality points but their GPA-bearing credits remain in the denominator.

For the pass/fail option, a passing result is recorded as P and excluded from GPA. A failing outcome is not converted to P; the applicable low letter grade remains on the record and is treated under the normal GPA rules.

How UMD GPA is calculated

For each GPA-bearing course:

course quality points = course credits × grade value

Then:

GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA-bearing credits

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 quality points and a 3-credit B+ earns 9.9. Together, the GPA is 21.9 ÷ 6 = 3.650.

Repeated courses at UMD

UMD normally includes graded attempts of a repeated course in the cumulative GPA. However, the New Student Provision can change that treatment for qualifying courses taken early in a student’s UMD career. Eligibility depends on when the original course was taken and other policy conditions.

Calculator limitation: The Repeat Impact tool is disabled for UMD because a simple universal replacement rule would be inaccurate. If a repeated course may qualify for the New Student Provision, use the manual-review course type and confirm the treatment with your advising college or the Registrar.

UMD also limits undergraduate repeats: students generally may repeat no more than 18 credits, and additional attempts of the same course can require a dean’s exception.

Do transfer grades count in UMD GPA?

No. Accepted transfer courses may provide degree credit, but the grades from those courses are not included in the UMD cumulative GPA. In the calculator, choose External transfer course so those credits and grades are excluded from the GPA estimate.

Transfer grades can still matter for purposes such as admission, entry to certain programs, and degree requirements, so GPA exclusion does not mean the external grade is irrelevant everywhere.

Academic standing and financial aid

For undergraduate academic performance, a cumulative UMD GPA below 2.0 results in academic probation. Graduation and program requirements can include additional rules, and individual colleges, majors, minors, or certificates may require at least a 2.0 GPA or a higher standard.

UMD’s financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress review also requires undergraduate students to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, along with separate pace/completion requirements. Academic standing and financial-aid eligibility are related but are not the same decision.

Dean’s List and Latin Honors

For Semester Academic Honors (Dean’s List), undergraduates generally need at least 12 credits under the regular grading method and a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher during fall or spring.

Latin Honors are awarded by college or school to the top 10% of graduating students: the highest 2% receive summa cum laude, the next 3% magna cum laude, and the next 5% cum laude. UMD publishes college-specific GPA cutoffs for each graduating cycle, so there is not one permanent university-wide honors cutoff.

Graduate GPA is different

Graduate students should not use this undergraduate profile as an official graduate GPA calculator. UMD graduate GPA rules differ in important ways, including the treatment of D-range grades and repeats, and the Graduate School uses a 3.0 cumulative GPA standard for good standing.
