How Penn calculates undergraduate GPA
For Penn’s standard undergraduate scale, GPA is total quality points divided by GPA hours. For a typical course, multiply the course-unit value by the grade-point value, add the quality points from all GPA-bearing courses, and divide by the total GPA-bearing course units.
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+, A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
Quick answer: Penn’s standard undergraduate scale tops out at 4.0. An A+ does not raise a course above 4.0, and there is no D− on this undergraduate scale.
Worked example
Suppose you earn an A in a 1 c.u. course and a B+ in another 1 c.u. course. The courses produce 4.0 + 3.3 = 7.3 quality points across 2 c.u., so the GPA for those courses is 3.65.
Which grades count in a Penn GPA?
Letter grades from A+ through F on the standard undergraduate scale are GPA-bearing. An F contributes zero quality points but still affects the denominator, so it can lower the GPA substantially.
A P from a pass/fail course is not included in the cumulative GPA. If the underlying result is an F, however, Penn records the F and it affects the cumulative GPA. Incompletes and other unresolved notations should not be converted into made-up grade points; use the final posted grade when the record is resolved.
| Mark or situation | Calculator treatment |
|---|---|
| A+ through F | Count using Penn’s grade points |
| P | Exclude from GPA |
| I / II / NR / GR / PR | Wait for the final grade |
| W / AUD | Exclude from GPA |
| External transfer or ordinary credit-away grade | Generally exclude from Penn cumulative GPA |
| Penn-approved study abroad | Review the posted Penn treatment before calculating |
Repeating a course at Penn
Penn does not have one simple grade-replacement rule that is safe to apply to every undergraduate repeat. In the College, if you retake a course after an F, both the original F and the new grade are tabulated in the final GPA. If you repeat a course you already passed, the College says the second grade is recorded but is not counted in the cumulative average and no additional credit is awarded.
Wharton likewise states that an F remains in the cumulative GPA when a failed course is retaken, and the new grade also counts. Because repeat treatment depends on the original result and school rules, this calculator does not offer the shared Repeat Impact estimator. Confirm unusual repeat cases with your undergraduate school or advisor.
Do transfer courses count toward your Penn GPA?
Grades from ordinary external transfer credit generally do not appear on the Penn transcript and are not used to determine the Penn cumulative GPA. Credit approval is a separate question from GPA treatment.
Penn-approved study abroad can work differently: Penn states that grades from approved programs become part of the transcript and are calculated into the Penn GPA. For that reason, the calculator sends study-abroad coursework to manual review rather than treating every external course the same way.
Penn GPA requirements depend on the purpose
A calculator result does not by itself determine standing, graduation, financial aid, honors, or program eligibility. Penn’s undergraduate schools have their own academic-standing and degree rules.
| Purpose | Verified Penn rule/context |
|---|---|
| Federal undergraduate aid SAP | 2.00 cumulative GPA after the first academic year and at the end of each term thereafter, plus pace and time-frame requirements |
| College of Arts and Sciences graduation | 2.0 overall GPA and at least 2.0 in major courses, unless the department requires more |
| Wharton graduation | 2.0 cumulative GPA and 2.5 in concentration courses |
| Graduation honors | Summa 3.8+, magna 3.6–<3.8, cum laude 3.4–<3.6, with additional eligibility rules |
| Wharton satisfactory progression | Expected minimum 2.0 semester GPA and 2.0 cumulative GPA, plus other progress requirements |
Important: Do not use one threshold for a different purpose. A school’s academic-standing rule, a concentration requirement, federal-aid SAP, and graduation honors are separate policies even when they all refer to GPA.
Penn schools can use different grading systems
The University Registrar’s transcript key states that Penn’s schools and divisions use different grading systems, and not every Penn school uses GPA in the same way. The calculator on this page is designed for the standard undergraduate 4.0 scale used by the main undergraduate schools for ordinary letter-graded work.
Graduate, Law, Dental, Medical, Veterinary, and other professional records can have materially different grades or GPA treatment. Use the rules for your actual transcript level rather than forcing those records into this undergraduate calculator.
UPenn GPA calculator FAQs
Is an A+ worth 4.3 at Penn?
No. On Penn’s standard undergraduate scale, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points.
Does Penn have a D- grade?
Not on the standard undergraduate scale used here. Penn lists D+ as 1.3 and D as 1.0, followed by F at 0.0.
Does pass/fail affect my Penn GPA?
A P does not enter the cumulative GPA. An F in a pass/fail course does affect the GPA because the F remains a failing grade at 0.0.
Does retaking a failed class replace the F?
No simple replacement rule applies. College and Wharton guidance both keep the original F in the cumulative GPA when a failed course is retaken, while the new counted attempt can also affect GPA.
Do transfer grades count in my Penn GPA?
Ordinary external transfer grades generally do not. Penn may award credit without placing the external grade on the Penn transcript or using it in the cumulative GPA.
Do study-abroad grades count at Penn?
They can. Penn says grades from approved study-abroad programs become part of the transcript and are calculated into the Penn GPA, so check the posted Penn grade and course-unit treatment before entering them.
What GPA do I need to graduate from Penn?
It depends on your undergraduate school and program. For example, the College requires a 2.0 overall GPA plus its major-GPA rule, while Wharton requires at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and 2.5 in the concentration courses.
What GPA qualifies for Penn graduation honors?
Penn’s undergraduate graduation-honors bands are summa cum laude at 3.8 or higher, magna cum laude at 3.6 to below 3.8, and cum laude at 3.4 to below 3.6, subject to the University’s additional eligibility conditions.
