Interactive test score lookup table
This grade chart lists the percent for every possible score on a test of 3 to 30 questions, a column for each test length and a row for each number right, so one glance turns “17 out of 20” into 85% without a calculator. The first 10 rows show at once, and Show all opens the rest in place.
Teachers keep it beside a stack of quizzes to grade fast and the same way every time; students use it to check a score the moment a test comes back. Switch Show to Percent + letter to add the letter grade beside each percent, or switch Rows to Wrong when you count the misses instead of the right answers. Type a test length in Questions and the chart highlights that column and scrolls to it, growing past 30 for tests of up to 100 questions.
Your Show, Rows and Questions settings come back by themselves next visit. Save keeps a setup, with any score you tapped, on this device under My saves. On a phone, Add to home screen puts the chart beside your apps for the next stack of quizzes.
How to use the grade chart
Find the test length
Run along the top row to the total number of questions on the test.
Find the score
Run down the left column to the number right, or the number wrong if you switched Rows.
Read where they meet
The cell where the row and column cross is the percent. Point at it or tap it to light up both lines.
Say a quiz has 25 questions and a student gets 20 right. Type 25 in Questions and that column lights up; run down it to 20 right and the cell reads 80%. Tap it and the line above the chart repeats it in words: 20 right out of 25 = 80% B−.
A tapped score stays lit until you tap it again, so you can scroll away and come back to it. Copy link in Options shares the chart with that score already picked, which is handy for a parent email or a class page.
How to work out a test percentage
Percent = Number right ÷ Questions × 100
Every cell in the chart comes from this one line. Here it is for 18 right on a 25-question spelling test.
| Step | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Share of the test right | 18 ÷ 25 | 0.72 |
| Turn it into a percent | 0.72 × 100 | 72% |
| Find the letter | 72 is in 70–72 | C− |
When you count misses instead, take them away from the total first. Three wrong on a 20-question test leaves 17 right, and 17 ÷ 20 × 100 is 85%. A quicker way to think about it: each wrong answer costs 100 ÷ 20 = 5 points, so three misses take 15 points off 100.
Most results aren’t whole numbers. Two right out of 3 is 66.666…%, which the chart rounds to 67%. Rounding always goes to the nearest whole number, with a half going up, and the letter is read from the rounded number, so a cell never shows 90% beside a B+. Choose One decimal under Options to see 66.7% instead; on that setting 66.7% is a D, because it sits under the 67% line for a D+.
Standard letter grade and percentage scale
The letters in the chart follow the plus/minus scale used across this site. A+ and A both count as 4.0 grade points.
| Letter | % range | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100 | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96 | 4.0 |
| A− | 90–92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 |
| B− | 80–82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76 | 2.0 |
| C− | 70–72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 |
| D | 63–66 | 1.0 |
| D− | 60–62 | 0.7 |
| F | 0–59 | 0.0 |
Plenty of classrooms grade on a simpler 10-point scale with no plus or minus: 90–100 is an A, 80–89 a B, 70–79 a C, 60–69 a D and below 60 an F. Pick 10-point under Grading scale in Options and every letter in the chart switches to it.
Your school’s own policy decides the final word. Some districts write their rounding rule down; Fairfax County Public Schools, for one, rounds a grade on a 100-point scale up to the next whole number at 0.5 or above, which is the same rule the chart uses.
Calculate custom test sizes with our EZ Grader
A fixed table stops working when a test doesn’t fit it: 120 questions, half credit on a short answer, or a whole class to score at once. The EZ Grader takes any number of questions, accepts half points, and scores every paper you enter with a class average, highest and lowest.
One case neither tool covers is a test where questions carry different points, such as 2-point multiple choice with a 10-point essay. There, add up the points earned, divide by the points possible and multiply by 100: 41 of 50 points is 82%, a B−, however many items were missed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my grade on a grade chart?
Find the number of questions on the test along the top and the number you got right down the side. The cell where that row and column meet is your percent. Switch on Percent + letter to see the letter grade in the same cell.
How do you grade a test by the number of questions missed?
Subtract the misses from the total, divide by the total and multiply by 100. Four wrong on a 16-question quiz is 12 ÷ 16 × 100 = 75%. Switching Rows to Wrong lets you read it straight from the chart.
What is the formula for a test percentage?
Percent equals the number right divided by the number of questions, times 100. For 27 right out of 30, that is 0.9 × 100 = 90%.
What letter grade is a 67?
A 67% is a D+ on the plus/minus scale, where D+ covers 67 to 69. On a 10-point scale with no plus or minus it is a D, since 60 to 69 is a D.
What is 20 out of 25 as a letter grade?
Twenty out of 25 is 80%, which is a B− on the plus/minus scale and a B on a 10-point scale. Each of the 5 missed questions cost 4 points.
