What the 7.0 scale GPA calculator does and when to use it
Australian universities grade each unit from 1 to 7, and your GPA is the credit-weighted average of those grades. This calculator works out that 7-point GPA from your results and shows what it comes to on the US 4.0 scale.
Use it before an honours or postgraduate application, when a scholarship or honours program sets a GPA cutoff, or when a US school wants a 4.0 figure. It reads your university’s grades as QUT publishes them, so check that your own table uses the same marks.
How to work out your GPA out of 7
The calculator needs three things from your academic record:
Keep the Scale line on 7.0
Scale: 7.0 · Australian university is set for you. Switching scales keeps every unit you have typed.
Add your units
Under Grade type the number (6), the letters (HD, D, CR, P) or your mark (78). Set Credits to the unit’s credit points: 12 at QUT, 6 at many other universities.
Read the GPA and its 4.0 value
The result gives your GPA out of 7 and the 4.0 scale value. Options ▾ switches the 4.0 conversion to a straight ratio.
The 7-point GPA formula, with one worked example
GPA = Σ (grade × credit points) ÷ Σ credit points
Grade
The unit’s result from 1 to 7: High Distinction 7, Distinction 6, Credit 5, Pass 4, and 3 to 1 for fails.
Credit points
The unit’s weight on your transcript. Units of equal size count equally.
GPA
The average, out of 7. Failed units stay in it.
Take a first-semester business student with four 12-credit-point units: a High Distinction in Marketing, a Distinction in Accounting, a Credit in Business statistics and a Pass in Economics.
| Unit | Result | Grade | Credit points | 4.0 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing | HD | 7 | 12 | 4.0 |
| Accounting | D | 6 | 12 | 4.0 |
| Business statistics | C | 5 | 12 | 3.0 |
| Economics | P | 4 | 12 | 2.0 |
Multiply each grade by 12 and add them: 84 + 72 + 60 + 48 = 264. Divide by the 48 credit points and the GPA is 5.50 out of 7.
The 4.0 value is worked out unit by unit in the same way: 4.0, 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0 average to 3.25. Show an example loads these four units, and How your GPA is calculated lists every step.
How to read your 7-point GPA
The big number is your GPA out of 7, and the line under it names the grade band it falls in, such as between a Credit and a Distinction. Compare it with the cutoff your faculty or scholarship publishes, since honours entry lines differ between universities.
4.0 scale is the US-style equivalent. It follows a US graduate admissions table, Andrews University’s, which treats both a High Distinction and a Distinction as an A. Credit points counted is the total weight behind the average.
This table shows each grade with QUT’s marks and the 4.0 value the calculator uses. Universities set their own mark ranges, so check yours.
| Grade | Name | Mark at QUT | 4.0 value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | High Distinction | 85–100 | 4.0 |
| 6 | Distinction | 75–84 | 4.0 |
| 5 | Credit | 65–74 | 3.0 |
| 4 | Pass | 50–64 | 2.0 |
| 3 | Marginal Fail | 40–49 | 0.0 |
| 2 | Fail | 25–39 | 0.0 |
| 1 | Low Fail | under 25 | 0.0 |
For a goal, press Open GPA planner. Moving the student above from 5.50 to 6.00 over the next 48 credit points needs a 6.50 average, such as High Distinctions in half the units and Distinctions in the rest.
What changes a 7-point GPA
Fails count. QUT’s policy puts every numeric attempt into the GPA, so a 3, 2 or 1 drags the average down even after you pass the unit on a retake. A withdrawn fail, graded K, counts as a 1.
Mark ranges. At QUT a High Distinction starts at 85, while Andrews University’s table lists 80 for Australian transcripts. When you type marks, check that the grade under the row matches your transcript, and type the grade number if it doesn’t.
Unequal units. A 24-credit-point capstone weighs twice as much as a 12-point unit. Set Credits per unit, because a blank cell counts as 12.
The 4.0 conversion. Credential evaluators such as WES convert each grade and then average them, as the calculator does. A straight ratio (5.5 ÷ 7 × 4 = 3.14) gives a lower figure than that table, which is why Options labels it unofficial.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 7.0 GPA?
A 7.0 is the top of the Australian 7-point scale: a High Distinction in every unit. A Pass average works out to 4 and a Distinction average to 6.
What is the 7-point grading scale?
It turns each unit’s result into a number: 7 for a High Distinction, 6 for a Distinction, 5 for a Credit and 4 for a Pass. Grades 3, 2 and 1 are fails, and the GPA averages them all by credit points.
How do I convert a 7-point GPA to a 4.0 GPA?
Convert each unit first, then average: a US admissions table counts HD and D as 4.0, Credit as 3.0 and Pass as 2.0. Dividing the whole GPA by 7 and multiplying by 4 is simpler but usually lower.
Do failed units count in an Australian GPA?
At QUT they do, because every attempt with a numeric grade goes into the GPA. Passing the unit later adds a new grade but doesn’t erase the fail.
What does HD mean on an Australian transcript?
HD stands for High Distinction, the top grade, worth 7 on the GPA scale. At QUT it means a mark of 85 or more.
