What the GPA converter does and when to use it
Type one grade, a percent, a letter or a GPA, and the converter shows it on every scale at once: 88% is a B+, which is 3.3 on the 4.0 scale. The 4.0 GPA leads, and the tiles under it give the letter, the percent and the 4.3 scale.
It is also a GPA and letter grade converter: type a letter like B+ to see its GPA and percent band, or a GPA like 3.4 to see the letter it falls on.
You need it when an application, a scholarship form or a transfer office asks for a 4.0 GPA and your report card shows percents. It converts grades you already have. It doesn’t convert a weighted GPA, which needs each course’s level, and it doesn’t handle country scales like the Italian 110 or the UK degree classes.
How to convert a GPA or percent with the converter
- Say what you have. Set Convert from to Percent, Letter, 4.0 GPA or 4.3 GPA.
- Type your grade. Enter it under Grade: 88, 88%, 3.4 or B+. The answer shows as you type.
- Pick the scale you need. Tap a tile, such as Letter or Estimated percent, to make it the big number.
- Add courses if you need a GPA. Press Convert multiple courses to list each course with its Credits.
How to convert percent to a 4.0 GPA: formula and a worked example
4.0 GPA = Σ (chart points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Chart points
The 4.0 value of each grade’s letter: 93–96% is an A (4.0), 87–89% a B+ (3.3).
Credits
How much each course counts; leave them all at 3 to weigh courses equally.
Σ
Add up over every course you convert.
Say your junior-year report card shows Biology 92%, Calculus 85%, English 88% and History 79%. Each percent takes its chart letter first (92% is an A−, 85% a B, 88% a B+, 79% a C+), then that letter’s points:
| Course | Grade | Grade points | Credits | Quality points | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biology (92%) | A– | 3.7 | 3 | 11.1 | |||
| Calculus (85%) | B | 3.0 | 4 | 12.0 | |||
| English (88%) | B+ | 3.3 | 3 | 9.9 | |||
| History (79%) | C+ | 2.3 | 3 | 6.9 | |||
Total quality points 39.9 Credits counted 13 GPA 3.07 | |||||||
That’s the 3.07 the converter shows for this sample, labeled “GPA calculated from individual grades”. The same four percents average 85.92%, its “Average percentage”, which on its own would be a B and a 3.00. The two aren’t equivalents: a 92% earns 3.7 while an 85% earns the same 3.0 as an 83%.
How to read your converted GPA
The big number is your 4.0 GPA, or an estimated percent when you typed a 4.0 GPA, until you tap another tile. With several courses it’s labeled “GPA calculated from individual grades”. The line under it says why: the letter your percent landed on, or which two chart letters your GPA sits between.
The tiles show the same grade every other way, and the highlighted one is the big number; your pick is kept when you save or share. A GPA turned into a percent is always an estimate, shown as a range like “≈ 86–87%”: a GPA between two letters can only be placed between their bands, and the percents behind it can’t be recovered.
Open “How your result is calculated” to check each step, and the chart under the result for every letter. Schools set their own cutoffs, so if your school prints its own table, use that.
What changes a GPA conversion: weighted, 4.3 and straight-ratio scales
Weighted GPAs. A weighted GPA can’t be converted without each course’s level, because schools add different bonuses (some give no honors points for a D or an F). The result links the 5.0 Scale GPA Calculator, which asks each course’s level.
4.3 to 4.0. On a 4.3 scale, like Cornell’s and Stanford’s, an A+ is worth 4.3. On the 4.0 scale it counts as 4.0, so anything between 4.0 and 4.3 converts to 4.00, and every other letter stays the same.
Straight ratio. Under Options ▾, Convert by can divide instead: 85 ÷ 100 × 4 = 3.40, where the chart gives a 3.0. This is a proportional estimate; your school may use a different method.
GPA normalization from another scale. To normalize a GPA out of 10, 20 or any other maximum, turn it into a percent first: 8.2 out of 10 is 8.2 ÷ 10 × 100 = 82%. Enter 82 as a Percent and set Convert by to straight ratio for the proportional 4.0 figure, 3.28, or keep the chart for the letter-based 2.7 (B−).
Numbers that don’t fit. A 95 typed with Convert from set to 4.0 GPA is flagged, “95 is above 4.0. Did you mean a percent?”, with one tap to switch to Percent. An F means below 60%, the failing band.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my percentage to a 4.0 GPA?
Find each percent’s letter on the grade chart, take that letter’s points (A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0), then average them by credits. An 88% is a B+, so it’s 3.3.
What GPA is an 85?
An 85% is a B on the standard chart (83–86%), which is a 3.0 on the 4.0 scale. By straight ratio it would be 3.40; that’s a proportional estimate, and your school may use a different method.
How do I convert a weighted 5.0 GPA to a 4.0 scale?
You need each course’s level, because the bonus differs by course and by school. The 5.0 Scale GPA Calculator asks each course’s level and works it out.
What is a 3.5 GPA as a percentage?
A 3.5 sits halfway between a B+ (87–89%) and an A− (90–92%), so it’s an estimated 89–90%. A GPA can’t give back the exact percents behind it.
Is an A+ worth 4.3 or 4.0?
Both exist. Cornell and Stanford count an A+ as 4.3; on the standard 4.0 scale it’s 4.0, the same as an A. Pick 4.3 GPA in Convert from if your school uses it.
