Yale GPA Calculator

Yale College uses a 4.00 GPA scale with A worth 4.00 points and no A+ grade. Use this Yale GPA calculator to estimate your current or cumulative GPA, add planned courses, and test a target GPA for standard whole-credit Yale College courses, while accounting for Credit/D/Fail, failing grades, repeats, and transfer-work rules.

How to Use the Yale GPA Calculator

Enter your previous Yale GPA and the Yale course credits behind it if you want a cumulative estimate. Then add completed courses with their course-credit value and final grade. Once you have a valid GPA-bearing baseline, you can add planned courses or set a target GPA.

Calculator limitation: Yale courses can carry fractional course credit, including 0.5 and 1.5 credits. The current calculator interface does not safely accept those fractional values, so do not round a fractional-credit course to 1 credit. Calculate that case manually until fractional-credit entry is added.

This calculator is designed for the standard Yale College undergraduate letter-grade system. Professional schools can use different grading systems, and some do not calculate GPA at all.

Yale GPA Scale

Yale College’s GPA scale tops out at 4.00. There is no A+ grade.

GradeGrade points
A4.00
A-3.67
B+3.33
B3.00
B-2.67
C+2.33
C2.00
C-1.67
D+1.33
D1.00
D-0.67
F0.00

A D- is a passing letter grade. An F contributes zero grade points when the course is GPA-bearing.

Which Yale Grades Count in GPA?

MarkGPA treatmentWhat to know
A through FCountUse Yale’s official grade-point value.
CRExcludedCredit earned through Credit/D/Fail does not enter GPA.
PExcludedA Pass in a Pass/Fail course does not enter the Yale College GPA.
WExcludedWithdrawal is neutral and carries no course credit.
TITemporaryWait for the final grade.
ABXTemporaryWait for the final grade after the postponed exam.
NMDo not assign pointsNo Mark should not be converted to a made-up grade value.
SAT/NSATDo not assign pointsThese can appear in credit/year sequences; use the eventual transcript treatment.

Important: Credit/D/Fail does not turn every result into CR. Yale converts A through C- to CR, but D+, D, D-, and F remain the reported letter grades. That means a low grade in a Credit/D/Fail course can still affect GPA.

How Yale GPA Is Calculated

For a standard Yale College course, multiply the course credit by the grade-point value. Add the grade points for all GPA-bearing courses, then divide by the total GPA-bearing Yale course credits.

GPA = total Yale grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing Yale course credits

For example, a 1-credit A contributes 4.00 grade points and a 1-credit B+ contributes 3.33. Together, the GPA is 7.33 ÷ 2 = 3.665.

The calculator displays three decimal places for planning. Your official record controls whenever its calculation or display differs.

Repeated Courses at Yale

Yale does not use ordinary grade replacement for the Yale College GPA. If you take the same or an equivalent course twice, both grades appear on the transcript and both grades are included in the GPA and General Honors calculation, although course credit is ordinarily awarded only once.

Quick answer: Enter both graded attempts as separate completed rows. Do not remove the first grade or replace it with the second grade in an ordinary Yale College GPA estimate.

The calculator’s Repeat Impact button is therefore not offered for Yale because that shared tool models replacement rather than Yale’s count-both rule.

Transfer and Outside Courses

Accepted transfer work can help satisfy Yale degree-credit requirements, but outside grades should not be added to this Yale College GPA calculation. Yale’s transfer-student transcript records the prior institutions, accepted credits, and course titles without listing the grades earned there, and General Honors GPA is based on courses taken at Yale.

Study abroad and other outside-credit situations can have separate academic and financial-aid rules. Treat credit acceptance, GPA inclusion, major credit, and financial-aid pace as separate questions.

Academic Good Standing and Financial Aid

Yale College academic good standing is not defined by one universal GPA cutoff. It is based largely on course-credit progress by term, and a record with three F grades in a term or over two or three successive enrolled terms also fails the good-standing standard.

Federal financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is different. Yale’s current undergraduate SAP policy requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, a cumulative completion rate of 67%, and completion within the maximum timeframe. SAP also has its own rules for withdrawals, temporary grades, repeats, and outside credits.

Important: Do not use the ordinary Yale College repeat rule to predict federal-aid SAP. For SAP’s qualitative GPA, Yale’s current policy says only the higher grade from a repeated course counts, while the ordinary Yale College GPA includes both grades.

Yale Honors and GPA

General Honors at graduation are class-relative rather than fixed GPA cutoffs. Yale awards General Honors to no more than 30% of the graduating class: no more than 5% summa cum laude, the next 10% magna cum laude, and the next 15% cum laude.

Distinction in the Major is a different system. The general Yale College standard uses A or A- performance in three-quarters of major credits plus the required senior work, with department or program nomination and additional program-specific details.

CR can also behave differently across honors systems: it is excluded from the ordinary GPA used for General Honors but can count as a non-A grade for Distinction in the Major and Phi Beta Kappa calculations.

Different Yale Grading Systems

The Yale College 4.00 scale should not be applied automatically to every Yale school. For example, Yale School of Public Health uses Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail and states that it does not compute GPA or class rank.

Yale College students taking graduate or professional-school courses should use the grade actually recorded for the Yale College record. If the course uses a nonletter professional-school system, confirm the transcript treatment before entering it in a numerical GPA calculation.

Yale Admissions GPA Context

Yale Undergraduate Admissions does not publish a minimum first-year GPA. Admissions describes academic strength as essential but evaluates grades in the context of the applicant’s school and record rather than applying one required GPA number.

Transfer and Eli Whitney applicants likewise should not treat the Yale College 4.00 enrolled-student GPA as an admissions conversion formula. Yale reviews prior college work in its original context and publishes separate rules for transferable credit.

Yale GPA FAQs

Does Yale have an A+?

No. Yale College’s letter-grade scale begins with A at 4.00, followed by A- at 3.67.

Does Credit/D/Fail affect my Yale GPA?

A CR does not enter the GPA, but D+, D, D-, and F are not converted to CR and remain letter grades. Those letter grades therefore keep their normal GPA treatment.

Does a Pass count in Yale GPA?

A P in a Pass/Fail course is excluded from the Yale College GPA. Do not assign it a 4.0 or any other numerical value.

Does Yale replace a grade when I repeat a course?

Not for the ordinary Yale College GPA. Both grades are included, even though course credit is ordinarily awarded only once.

Do transfer grades count in Yale GPA?

Do not add grades from prior institutions to this Yale College GPA estimate. Accepted outside work can count for degree credit without becoming a Yale GPA grade.

What GPA do I need for Yale financial aid SAP?

The current Yale College federal-aid SAP policy requires at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, along with a 67% completion rate and other progress requirements. SAP is separate from ordinary academic good standing.

What GPA is needed for Yale honors?

Yale does not publish one fixed GPA cutoff for General Honors. Honors are limited by graduating-class percentages, so the effective GPA boundary can vary by class.

Can I use this calculator for Yale Law, Medicine, Public Health, or another professional school?

Not automatically. Yale schools can use different grading systems; use this calculator only when the Yale College A-through-F grade-point system actually applies to your record.
