How WashU calculates GPA
For the traditional undergraduate record, WashU calculates GPA from total grade points divided by total letter-graded credit units attempted. A and A+ are both worth 4.0 points per unit, while F is worth 0.0 and still counts as letter-graded attempted credit.
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+, A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Quick answer: Multiply each letter grade’s point value by the course credit units, add the grade points, then divide by the total letter-graded units included in GPA.
Worked example
Suppose you earn an A in a 3-unit course and a B in a 4-unit course. The A contributes 12.0 grade points and the B contributes 12.0, for 24.0 total points across 7 GPA units. Your GPA for those courses is 24 ÷ 7 = 3.429.
What does not count in the WashU GPA?
WashU excludes several grades and transcript notations from GPA while they remain in that excluded status. These include Pass, No Pass, Incomplete, Withdrawal, No Grade Reported, retaken-course notation, successful and unsuccessful audits, exam credit, transfer credit, and courses not transferred.
| Grade or notation | GPA treatment |
|---|---|
| P / Pass | Excluded |
| NP / No Pass | Excluded |
| I / Incomplete | Excluded while unresolved |
| N / No grade reported | Excluded while unresolved |
| W / Withdrawal | Excluded |
| R / Retaken-course notation | Excluded attempt |
| L / Successful audit | Excluded |
| Z / Unsuccessful audit | Excluded |
| Exam credit | Excluded |
| Transfer credit | Excluded |
Important: An unresolved I or N is not permanently harmless to GPA. Under the general undergraduate policy, an unresolved I or N can automatically become F after the university’s deadline. Use the final posted grade once the record changes.
How repeated courses affect WashU GPA
For the standard undergraduate retake policy, eligible courses may be retaken and the higher grade is used in the GPA. The other attempt remains visible on the transcript with an R notation, and credit is awarded once.
The calculator’s Repeat Impact button is intentionally disabled for WashU because the shared repeat estimator models a simpler replacement rule and could be wrong when a retake is lower than the original grade. To model a completed eligible retake, include the higher attempt as the GPA-bearing course and select Retaken attempt marked R for the excluded lower attempt.
Calculator limitation: Retake eligibility and procedures can depend on the student’s school and course. The calculator estimates GPA treatment; it does not decide whether you are permitted to retake a course.
Do transfer grades count toward WashU GPA?
No. Approved transfer courses can provide WashU credit, but grades and grade points from the other institution do not enter the Washington University GPA. This distinction matters when you are estimating a cumulative WashU GPA: do not enter an outside letter grade as though it were a WashU grade.
Transfer-credit eligibility is a separate question from GPA treatment. Individual schools may impose minimum grades, preapproval rules, residency requirements, or limits on how transfer credit applies toward a degree.
WashU academic standing and the 2.0 GPA threshold
The general undergraduate policy uses a 2.0 semester and cumulative GPA as key minimum academic-standing indicators, together with progress in completed units and the student’s area of study. A first semester below 2.0 can trigger Academic Concern review; a cumulative GPA below 2.0 or repeated semester performance below 2.0 can trigger Academic Notice review.
For federal financial-aid satisfactory academic progress, WashU’s general undergraduate policy also states a minimum 2.0 GPA, alongside pace and maximum-time-frame requirements. A calculator result by itself does not determine standing or aid eligibility because those decisions use additional criteria and school review.
Olin students also have a professional GPA requirement: the undergraduate business policy states that professional, semester, and cumulative GPAs must each be at least 2.0 for good academic standing.
Graduation GPA requirements
A 2.0 overall GPA is a common undergraduate degree threshold at WashU, but school and program requirements still matter. Arts & Sciences requires an overall GPA of at least 2.0, Olin requires a 2.0 overall GPA plus a 2.0 GPA in professional coursework, and McKelvey specifies a 2.0 cumulative GPA in applicable WashU courses plus a 2.0 overall engineering GPA.
Do not use one cumulative-GPA number as a substitute for a major, professional, engineering, scholarship, or other program-specific requirement.
WashU Law uses a different grading system
The main calculator is not a WashU Law GPA calculator. The School of Law uses a separate numerical grading system, including values above 4.0, so applying the undergraduate A–F table to a Law record would be inaccurate.
Graduate and other professional programs can also have separate standing, repeat, or program-GPA rules. Use the calculator for the traditional undergraduate record described on this page unless your program confirms that the same GPA architecture applies.
How to use the WashU GPA calculator
- Enter your previous cumulative GPA and the GPA-bearing credit units behind it if you want a cumulative estimate.
- Add completed WashU courses with their credit units and final grades.
- Use the appropriate course type for transfer credit or a lower retaken attempt that carries the R notation.
- Add planned courses to see a projected GPA.
- Open the target-GPA tool to estimate the average needed across a chosen number of future units.
If the required target average is above 4.0, the target is not mathematically reachable within the number of future units you entered. Increasing the future-unit window may make the target feasible.
Frequently asked questions
Is an A+ worth more than an A at WashU?
No. For the traditional undergraduate GPA, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points per credit unit.
Does an F count in WashU GPA?
Yes. An F contributes 0.0 grade points, but its letter-graded credit units remain in the GPA denominator unless another policy later excludes that attempt, such as an eligible retake treatment.
Does Pass/No Pass affect WashU GPA?
Pass and No Pass are ignored in the GPA calculation under the general undergraduate grading table. Degree rules can still limit when Pass/No Pass may be used or whether the course satisfies a requirement.
Do transfer grades affect WashU GPA?
No. Transfer credit may appear on the record and count toward degree requirements, but the outside grade and grade points do not enter the WashU GPA.
Which grade counts if I repeat a course?
Under the standard undergraduate retake policy, the higher eligible attempt is used in GPA and the other attempt is marked with R. Because retake eligibility has conditions, confirm the course with your school before relying on a projected repeat outcome.
What GPA do I need to be in good academic standing at WashU?
The general undergraduate policy uses a 2.0 semester and cumulative GPA as key minimum indicators, together with unit progress and school-specific requirements. Falling below a threshold can trigger review rather than a calculator making an automatic standing decision.
What GPA is required to graduate from WashU?
A 2.0 overall GPA is a general undergraduate benchmark and appears in major school degree policies, but some schools and programs add separate GPA or minimum-grade requirements. Check the requirements for your specific degree and major.
Can I use this calculator for WashU Law?
No. WashU Law uses a different numerical grading system. The main 4.0 undergraduate calculator should not be used for a Law GPA.
