How to use the UW GPA calculator

Enter your previous UW GPA and the numerically graded credits behind it if you want a cumulative estimate. Then add completed UW courses with their quarter credits and final numeric grades. You can also add planned courses to see a projected GPA or use the target tool to estimate the average you would need over future graded credits.

Important: This profile is for standard UW Seattle undergraduate residence GPA. Graduate and professional programs can use different grading rules, and UW Bothell or Tacoma students should confirm campus-specific policies before relying on the result.

UW grading scale

UW’s standard undergraduate grades are numeric, not fixed letter grades. Numeric grades begin at 4.0 and decrease by one-tenth to 0.0. That means the safest calculator input is the exact numeric grade shown on your UW record.

Letter labels on the transcript legend cover ranges rather than one universal point value. For example, an undergraduate A- spans 3.8 through 3.5, so converting every A- to one number would be inaccurate.

An NS or NC can still matter for credit completion, prerequisites, degree progress, or financial-aid pace even though it does not add grade points to the GPA.

How UW GPA is calculated

For each numerically graded course, multiply the course’s UW quarter credits by its numeric grade. Add those grade points, then divide by the total numerically graded credits.

UW GPA = total grade points ÷ total numerically graded credits

For example, a 5-credit course with a 4.0 earns 20 grade points. A 5-credit course with a 3.0 earns 15. Together, the GPA is 35 ÷ 10 = 3.500.

If you enter a previous cumulative GPA, remember that the calculator reconstructs prior grade points from the GPA and credits you provide. A rounded prior GPA can make a projection differ slightly from an official record based on underlying course-level data.

Repeating a course at UW

For a standard undergraduate repeat, UW counts both the original grade and the second grade in GPA, while course credit is counted only once. The calculator’s Repeat Impact button is therefore disabled because the shared repeat tool is designed for grade-replacement policies, not UW’s rule.

To estimate one ordinary repeat, enter the original attempt and the second attempt as separate completed rows. Do not remove the original grade from the GPA calculation.

Third-or-later attempts need special handling. Under the current undergraduate repeat policy, grades from a third or later taking are not included in GPA. Select the calculator’s third-or-later repeat course type so the numerical result pauses for review instead of counting that attempt incorrectly.

Do transfer grades count in the UW GPA?

No. Transfer coursework can earn UW transfer credit and Admissions can calculate a separate transfer GPA, but transfer grades are not included in the UW institutional GPA. In this calculator, use the external transfer course type so those credits and grades are excluded from the UW GPA estimate.

A department or selective major may still review transfer coursework or calculate its own admission GPA differently. That is separate from the cumulative UW GPA shown here.

Academic standing and financial aid

A cumulative UW GPA below 2.00 is important for undergraduate academic standing: UW’s current status definitions use 2.00 for academic alert/warning and recovery to good standing. This calculator can help you model a cumulative GPA, but it cannot determine your official standing.

Financial-aid satisfactory academic progress is a different test. For undergraduates, UW Financial Aid currently requires at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, at least 80% completion of cumulative attempted credits, and completion within the 225-attempted-credit maximum timeframe. A GPA calculator does not evaluate all of those requirements.

Dean’s List and baccalaureate honors

The Quarterly Dean’s List requires a quarterly GPA of at least 3.50 in at least 12 graded credits while pursuing a first undergraduate degree. The Annual Dean’s List has additional quarter-by-quarter requirements.

Baccalaureate-honors cutoffs are not one permanent UW-wide GPA. UW sets them annually by campus and school or college. For Seattle graduates in Autumn 2025 through Summer 2026, the published cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude thresholds vary across schools, so check the current honors table for your graduation year and school.

Graduate and professional students

Do not use the standard undergraduate profile as an official graduate or professional GPA calculator. UW’s transcript legend documents different graduate grade thresholds, and schools such as Law, Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy have program-specific grading histories or systems.

If your record is graduate or professional, use the calculator’s manual-review course type as a reminder to confirm the correct program rules rather than forcing the undergraduate scale onto the record.

University of Washington GPA FAQs

Does UW use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. UW numeric grades run from 4.0 down to 0.0 in 0.1 increments. The exact numeric grade is the GPA value used for a standard UW course.

What is an A- at UW?

UW does not assign one fixed GPA value to every A-. The undergraduate transcript legend associates A- with the numeric range 3.8 through 3.5, so use the exact numeric grade on your record.

Does an S or NS affect my UW GPA?

No. S and NS grades are excluded from GPA. They can still affect credit completion, degree requirements, prerequisites, or financial-aid progress.

Does a 0.0 count in UW GPA?

Yes. A numeric 0.0 contributes zero grade points while its numerically graded credits remain in the GPA denominator, so it can lower the GPA substantially.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade at UW?

Not for the ordinary undergraduate first repeat. Both the original and second grades are computed in GPA, while credit is counted once. Grades from third-or-later takings are not included in GPA under the current repeat rule.

Do community-college or transfer grades count in my UW GPA?

No. Transfer grades are not included in the UW institutional GPA, although Admissions may calculate a separate transfer GPA and departments may review transfer work for their own requirements.
