University of Vermont GPA Calculator

Use this University of Vermont GPA calculator to estimate your UVM undergraduate GPA on the official 4.0 quality-point scale, project how planned courses could change it, and work backward from a target GPA. It also reflects UVM’s post-2020 standard-course repeat rule and keeps transfer grades out of the institutional GPA calculation.

How to Use the UVM GPA Calculator

Enter your previous UVM GPA and the GPA-bearing credits behind it if you want a cumulative estimate. Then add completed UVM courses with their credits and final grades. You can also add planned courses to see a projected GPA or use the target tool to estimate the average you would need over future credits.

Important: UVM says official GPA calculations that extend beyond two decimal places are truncated, not rounded. The calculator displays three decimals for planning, so your official transcript GPA may display differently.

This profile is designed for the standard undergraduate UVM GPA. Graduate students have different grade and repeat rules and should use their official Graduate College record rather than applying the undergraduate repeat tool.

UVM GPA Scale

UVM uses quality points per credit. An A+ does not raise the scale above 4.0.

GradeQuality points per credit
A+4.00
A4.00
A-3.67
B+3.33
B3.00
B-2.67
C+2.33
C2.00
C-1.67
D+1.33
D1.00
D-0.67
F0.00
AF0.00
XF0.00

AF and XF are treated like F for GPA and academic standing. A zero-point grade still contributes its GPA-bearing credits to the denominator.

Grades that do not enter the UVM GPA

AU, INC, P/NP, R, S/U, SP/UP, W, ANP, and AUP are not used in the GPA calculation. An incomplete can later be replaced by a final grade, so use the final posted grade once the incomplete is resolved.

How UVM Calculates GPA

The basic formula is:

UVM GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA-bearing UVM credits

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.00 quality points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.99. Together, those courses produce 21.99 quality points over 6 credits, or 3.665 before UVM applies its official truncation rule.

If you enter a previous cumulative GPA, remember that multiplying a displayed GPA by previous credits is an estimate when the displayed GPA has already been truncated. Your official record remains the authoritative calculation.

Repeating a Course at UVM

For an undergraduate standard course repeated after August 30, 2020, UVM replaces the initial grade with an R and recalculates the GPA using only the repeated grade. The new grade is used even if it is lower than the original grade; UVM does not simply keep the higher grade.

Calculator limitation: Use the repeat estimate only for a straightforward two-attempt, same-credit standard course completed under the post-August-30-2020 undergraduate policy. Do not use it for older repeats, an original I/W/XF, repeatable-for-credit courses, additional attempts, or Academic Reprieve.

A standard course may generally be repeated once without approval. Additional repeats require the discretion of the dean of the student’s college or school. Courses officially designated repeatable for credit follow their own repeat limits and can have multiple grades count in GPA.

Do Transfer Grades Count in the UVM GPA?

No. UVM transfers eligible credit, not the external grade, into the institutional GPA. If you add an external transfer course in the calculator, select the transfer-course type so it is excluded from GPA math.

This is separate from whether the course is accepted for transfer or satisfies a degree requirement. Those decisions depend on UVM’s transfer-credit and academic-program rules.

GPA Requirements to Keep Separate

Different UVM policies use GPA for different purposes, so one number should not be treated as a universal cutoff.

PurposePublished UVM context
Good academic standingGenerally cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above, plus program-specific progression requirements
Undergraduate graduationUniversity minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00; college/school requirements may be higher
Financial-aid SAPProgram-specific cumulative GPA minimums; current undergraduate table ranges from 2.00 to 3.00, plus pace/timeframe rules
Admission scholarship renewalGenerally 3.0 cumulative GPA unless the specific award states otherwise
Graduate degreeMinimum 3.00 cumulative GPA, with some programs requiring more

Your calculator result is a planning estimate, not an academic-standing, aid, scholarship, or graduation decision.

Academic Reprieve

UVM’s Academic Reprieve policy can allow eligible returning undergraduate students to restart the GPA calculation under specific conditions after a qualifying absence. It applies to the prior UVM record as a whole rather than letting a student select individual courses to erase.

If Academic Reprieve applies to you, use the cumulative GPA and GPA-bearing credits shown on your current official UVM record as the calculator baseline. Financial-aid SAP evaluates reprieved coursework under separate rules.

Graduate Students

Graduate students should not use the undergraduate repeat rule. UVM graduate grading does not award D grades, graduate degree candidates generally need at least a 3.00 overall GPA, and a graduate course may be repeated for credit only when failed and only once, with the second grade used in GPA.

Program-specific graduate requirements can be higher, so check your program and Graduate College rules.

University Honors

Beginning with the 2025-2026 catalogue year, UVM awards Latin honors within each graduating college or school by class rank: the top 5% receive summa cum laude, the next 10% magna cum laude, and the next 10% cum laude. These are percentile-based honors, not fixed GPA cutoffs that this calculator can predict.

UVM GPA FAQs

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0 at UVM?

No. UVM assigns both A+ and A a value of 4.00 quality points per credit.

Does UVM round GPA?

UVM states that GPA calculations extending beyond two decimal places are truncated. For example, a value such as 1.456 is evaluated as 1.45 rather than rounded to 1.46.

Does a failed course still count in GPA credits?

Yes. F, AF, and XF carry zero quality points but are used in GPA and academic-standing calculations, so their GPA-bearing credits remain in the denominator.

If I repeat a class, does UVM keep the higher grade?

Not under the current undergraduate standard-course repeat policy. For qualifying repeats after August 30, 2020, only the repeated grade enters the recalculated GPA, even when it is lower than the original grade.

Does repeating a W or XF replace it with R?

No. UVM states that I, W, and XF originals are not replaced with R under this repeat policy.

Do transfer grades affect my UVM GPA?

No. Eligible transfer credit can be accepted, but the external grade is not included in the UVM GPA.

What GPA do I need to graduate from UVM?

The university-wide undergraduate minimum is 2.00 cumulative GPA, but your college, school, major, or program may have additional requirements.

What GPA is good academic standing at UVM?

UVM defines good academic standing as a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above together with the minimum GPA and progression requirements of the student’s program of study.

Do graduate students use the same repeat rules?

No. Graduate students have separate repeat rules and a different grade set, including no D grades. Graduate degree candidates generally need at least a 3.00 overall GPA, subject to higher program requirements.
