How UT Knoxville Calculates GPA

UT Knoxville calculates GPA by dividing the quality points you earn by the credit hours attempted in courses that count toward GPA. A course’s quality points equal its credit hours multiplied by the grade-point value. UT reports semester and cumulative GPA and rounds the result to two decimal places.

Quick example: A 3-credit A earns 12 quality points, while a 3-credit B earns 9. Together, 21 quality points divided by 6 GPA hours gives a 3.50 GPA.

Which Grades Count in Your UT GPA?

Regular undergraduate letter grades from A through F count in the GPA. An F contributes zero quality points but its GPA hours still count in the denominator, so it can lower your average substantially.

Several transcript notations do not enter the GPA calculation, including S, NC, W, WP, WF, NR, P, I, and related incomplete notations. Temporary or incomplete grades should not be converted into guessed letter grades; use the final grade once it is officially posted.

Do Transfer Grades Count at UT Knoxville?

For transfer courses taken after summer 1985, the hours may apply toward your degree, but the transfer grades do not enter your official UT GPA. That means you should not add an outside institution’s A, B, or other grade to this calculator as if it were a UT grade.

The calculator includes a transfer-course type that excludes those grades from GPA math. Admissions and individual colleges may still use transfer grades for other decisions, so “not in the UT GPA” does not mean “not considered anywhere.”

Repeating a Course and Grade Replacement

UT Knoxville’s undergraduate repeat and grade-replacement policy is not a simple “last grade always replaces the first” rule. Undergraduate courses can generally be repeated twice, and eligible students can use grade replacement for a limited number of courses and hours. The policy uses the highest eligible grade for the cumulative GPA, while all course attempts remain on the academic history.

Calculator limitation: Repeat Impact is intentionally disabled. The shared tool cannot safely enforce UT’s course-count, hour, grade-eligibility, and multiple-attempt rules. If your official UT record already reflects a replacement, use the cumulative GPA and GPA hours shown there as your starting baseline.

Grade replacement for the UT institutional GPA is also different from HOPE/TELS scholarship rules. Do not assume a replacement changes every GPA used for scholarships, financial aid, admission, or a program requirement in the same way.

Projecting Your GPA

To estimate a future GPA, enter your current cumulative GPA and GPA hours, then add planned UT courses with expected grades. The calculator combines your existing quality-point baseline with the projected quality points from those courses.

For example, if you currently have a 3.20 GPA over 30 GPA hours, your baseline represents 96 quality points. Future grades are added to those points and hours to estimate the new cumulative GPA.

What GPA Do You Need Next Term?

The target-GPA tool works backward from your current GPA, current GPA hours, target GPA, and planned future hours. It shows the average grade points per credit hour you would need over those future hours.

If the required average is above 4.0, the target is mathematically impossible within the number of hours you entered. Increasing the number of future GPA-bearing hours may make a target reachable, but the calculator does not decide academic standing, graduation eligibility, or scholarship status.

Academic Standing, Dean’s List, and Financial Aid

These policies use GPA for different purposes, so they should not be treated as one universal cutoff.

Undergraduate vs. Graduate and Professional Records

This calculator is for the current undergraduate institutional GPA. Graduate students have a different grade set in some areas and a separate repeat policy in which approved D/F repeats keep both the original and repeated grades in the cumulative graduate GPA.

UT’s Winston College of Law and College of Veterinary Medicine also have distinct grading histories or notations. Historical undergraduate records can use older grade-point values. Those records should be checked against the transcript and the appropriate Registrar, Graduate School, or professional-school policy rather than forced into this undergraduate calculator.
