How the University of Utah GPA works
The University of Utah calculates GPA from grade points and GPA credit hours. Multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by the grade-point value of the final grade, add those grade points, and divide by the total GPA credit hours.

Important: EU is treated like E for GPA purposes and contributes zero grade points while its GPA credit hours remain in the calculation.
Worked example
Suppose you earn an A in a 4-credit course, a B+ in a 3-credit course, and a C in a 5-credit course. That gives you 16.0 + 9.9 + 10.0 = 35.9 grade points across 12 GPA credit hours, for an estimated GPA of 2.992.
Which grades do not count in GPA?
CR, NC, S, U, I, T, W, AU, and NR do not enter the University of Utah GPA. That does not mean they are irrelevant to degree progress, repeat attempts, or financial-aid pace; those are separate rules.
Do transfer grades count in the University of Utah GPA?
No. Your transfer record may show transferred courses and grades, but the transfer GPA is not combined with your University of Utah GPA. Accepted transfer work can still satisfy requirements and can matter for repeat-attempt rules.
Repeated courses: the rule changed in 2026
For a course repeated on or after August 1, 2026, the University uses the highest earned grade to compute GPA. For a course repeated before that date, the prior policy used the most recent earned grade. If the repeated attempt ends in NC, U, W, AU, I, or T, the previous earned grade remains the GPA grade under the current policy.

The shared repeat tool models simple grade replacement, but Utah’s current rule must compare attempts and keep the highest earned grade. Use your current U of U cumulative GPA/GPA units as the baseline after the Registrar has processed a repeat, and confirm unusual repeat situations with your advisor or the Registrar.
What GPA do you need at the University of Utah?
Different rules use GPA for different purposes. For undergraduate university-wide good standing, the U says students generally need a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above. A baccalaureate degree also requires at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA in University of Utah coursework, while a college or major can have higher approved requirements.

How to use this calculator
Enter your current University of Utah cumulative GPA and GPA units, not simply all credits earned. Then add completed or planned U of U courses with their credit hours and expected/final grades. Use the projected result for planning and the target tool to estimate the future average needed for a goal GPA.
If your existing cumulative GPA already includes a processed repeat, do not add the excluded attempt again. For a new or unresolved repeat, use the Registrar’s record rather than trying to simulate it as an ordinary additional course.
University of Utah GPA FAQs
Is the University of Utah GPA on a 4.0 scale?
Yes. The standard institutional GPA uses a 4.0 scale with plus/minus values such as A-=3.7 and B+=3.3.
Does an E count in GPA at Utah?
Yes. E is a 0.0 grade, so its GPA credit hours remain in the denominator while it adds zero grade points.
Does EU count in GPA?
Yes. EU is the unofficial-withdrawal grade and is treated as E in the GPA calculation, so it counts at 0.0.
Do CR or NC grades affect GPA?
No. CR and NC do not enter the GPA calculation, although they can matter for credit completion and other academic rules.
Do transfer grades change my U of U GPA?
No. Transfer GPA is not combined with your University of Utah GPA.
Which grade counts if I repeat a class?
For repeats on or after August 1, 2026, the highest earned grade is used for GPA. Earlier repeats were governed by the prior most-recent-grade rule, so students with older repeats should rely on the GPA shown in their official academic record.
Is a 2.0 GPA enough to graduate?
A 2.0 cumulative University of Utah GPA is the university-wide minimum for a baccalaureate degree, and the university minimum for major coursework is also 2.0. Your college or program can have approved higher standards or additional requirements.
What GPA is needed for Latin honors?
The Registrar lists 3.500–3.699 for cum laude, 3.700–3.899 for magna cum laude, and 3.900–4.000 for summa cum laude. Honors also require specified University of Utah and letter-graded credit hours, so GPA alone does not establish eligibility.
