How USF Calculates GPA

USF calculates its institutional GPA from USF coursework: multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by the grade’s quality-point value, add the quality points, then divide by the USF hours included in the GPA.

Quick answer: USF uses a 4.0 maximum. An A+ does not exceed 4.0, and plus/minus grades below A change the quality-point value.

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12 quality points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.99. Together, those courses produce 21.99 quality points over 6 GPA hours, or a 3.665 GPA.

Which Grades Count in the USF GPA?

Standard letter grades count according to the table above. An F contributes zero quality points but its GPA hours still matter, so it can lower the average substantially.

Several non-letter, temporary, withdrawal, and repeat-excluded marks do not enter the USF GPA calculation. Examples include S/U, W, incomplete or unresolved marks while they remain nonfinal, and an original attempt carrying the repeat-exclusion indicator after approved Grade Forgiveness.

Important: An FF is an academic-integrity failure. It counts as an F for GPA purposes and is not eligible for Grade Forgiveness.

USF GPA vs. Transfer GPA

USF distinguishes your institutional USF GPA from GPA earned at other institutions. Transfer grades can matter for admission, prerequisites, program review, and other decisions, but they are not added to the institutional USF GPA calculated here.

Use the calculator’s transfer/external course type only to document that distinction; those rows are excluded from the numerical USF GPA estimate.

How Grade Forgiveness Affects GPA

Eligible undergraduate and non-degree students may be able to repeat a USF course and have the repeated grade used in the USF GPA instead of the original grade. USF limits Grade Forgiveness, generally requires both attempts to be at USF, keeps both grades on the record, and does not allow it for an FF grade.

When you already know a repeat is eligible, the tool can estimate the GPA effect of replacing the original attempt’s quality points with the new attempt. Do not use it to assume an ordinary repeat will automatically erase the first grade.

Projecting Your USF GPA

A projection is most useful when the prior GPA and prior GPA hours come from the same USF institutional record. Mixing a transfer GPA, program GPA, or another institution’s hours into that baseline will produce the wrong result.

Does USF round GPA up?
