How to use the URI GPA calculator

Enter your current URI GPA and GPA-applicable credits if you already
have a cumulative record, then add completed courses with their URI
credits and final grades. You can also add planned courses to see a

future credits.

Important: Repeat Impact is not automated for URI. Effective Fall
2026, URI’s current undergraduate repeat rule removes the lower of two
qualifying grades, which is not the same as always replacing the
original grade. Repeats completed before Fall 2026 can also fall under
the older Second Grade Option rules.

Grades and marks such as P, S, I, NC, NR, NW, and W do not receive
ordinary letter-grade quality points in the GPA calculation. Graduate
Pass-Fail/S-U rules differ, so this calculator is scoped to the standard
undergraduate record.

How URI calculates GPA

URI calculates quality points for each GPA-bearing course by multiplying
course credits by the grade’s quality-point value. Add those quality
points and divide by total GPA-applicable credits.

For example, a 3-credit A- earns 11.1 quality points and a 4-credit B+
earns 13.2. Together, 24.3 quality points divided by 7 credits gives a
GPA of about 3.471.

Repeating a course at URI

Effective Fall 2026, the current undergraduate repeat rules allow a
repeat after an original C- or below without the older first-30-credit
restriction for a second attempt completed in Fall 2026 or later. When
the current rule applies, the lower of the two grades is removed from
earned credits and the GPA calculation. A third attempt for a course
that is not repeatable for credit requires dean authorization.

Repeats completed before Fall 2026 remain subject to the earlier Second
Grade Option policy. Because the correct treatment depends on timing and
the two grades, use your processed URI record or contact your dean or
Enrollment Services rather than using a generic grade-replacement
estimate.

Do transfer grades count in the URI GPA?

Usually no. URI says most accepted transfer credit posts with a T grade
and is not calculated in the URI GPA. The original grade can still
matter for transfer eligibility or secondary admission requirements in
some programs, so transfer-credit acceptance and institutional GPA
treatment should be kept separate.

Academic standing, graduation, and financial aid

URI uses different GPA rules for different purposes. Undergraduate good
standing requires a 2.0 overall GPA, and undergraduate degrees require
at least a 2.00 cumulative average. Financial-aid SAP has its own rules:
after 60 credits or the fourth term, undergraduates need at least a 2.0
cumulative GPA, along with the required completion pace and maximum
timeframe.

Dean’s List uses a 3.30-3.79 GPA range and President’s List uses
3.80-4.00, together with URI’s stated GPA-applicable credit
requirements. Graduation honors use separate thresholds and
calculations, so a calculator estimate should not be treated as an
official honors determination.

Graduate students

This calculator is not a graduate-record calculator. URI’s Graduate
School requires at least a 3.00 GPA for continuation and graduation, and
graduate S/U or Pass-Fail treatment differs from the standard
undergraduate U rule. Graduate students should use their official
graduate record and Graduate School rules.

URI GPA FAQs

Is URI on a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. URI uses a 4.0 maximum quality-point scale for its current standard
letter grades.

Does an F count in my URI GPA?

Yes. An F carries 0.00 quality points, so its GPA-applicable credits
remain in the denominator and can lower your GPA.

Does a U count in the URI GPA?

Under the standard undergraduate S-U grading basis, U carries zero
quality points. Graduate Pass-Fail uses different notation and
treatment, which is one reason this calculator does not combine
undergraduate and graduate records.

Does a W affect my URI GPA?

A withdrawal does not receive letter-grade quality points and is not
part of the ordinary GPA calculation, although withdrawals can matter
for financial-aid pace.

Does transfer credit change my URI GPA?

Most accepted transfer credit does not. It generally posts as T and is
excluded from the URI GPA, even though the credits may apply toward
degree requirements.

How does the Fall 2026 repeat rule work?

For a qualifying undergraduate repeat under the current rule, URI
removes the lower of the two grades from earned credits and GPA. Older
repeats may be governed by the pre-Fall-2026 Second Grade Option, so
