How UNC calculates GPA
UNC-Chapel Hill calculates undergraduate GPA from quality points and semester credit hours. Multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by its grade-point value, add the quality points, and divide by the total letter-graded hours attempted.
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 quality points and a 3-credit B- earns 8.1. Together, 20.1 quality points divided by 6 graded hours gives a 3.350 GPA.
Which UNC grades count in GPA?
Regular A–F letter grades count. An F contributes zero quality points but its attempted credit hours remain in the GPA denominator. UNC’s FA and F* are also failing grades for GPA purposes.
Important: IN (Incomplete) and AB (Absent from the final examination) are temporary grades, but UNC calculates them as F grades with zero quality points until a permanent grade replaces them. When the grade changes, the GPA is recalculated.
PS and LP under the undergraduate Pass/Low Pass/Fail option do not count toward GPA. A failed course under that option is recorded as F and does count in GPA.
Repeated courses at UNC
UNC does not use ordinary grade replacement for repeated non-repeatable courses. The grades from all attempts are included in the cumulative GPA. Degree credit is generally earned only once, using the highest passing grade or the later attempt when passing grades are the same.
Because the shared Repeat Impact tool models replacement, it is disabled for this UNC profile. To estimate a repeated course correctly, enter each graded attempt as a separate completed course.
Do transfer grades count in the UNC GPA?
No. Grades and attempted hours from other institutions are not included in the UNC-Chapel Hill GPA, even when the credit transfers. Transfer hours can still matter for degree progress and completion-rate rules.
Interinstitutional and other special external enrollments can involve UNC grade conversion rules, so the calculator sends those cases to manual review rather than guessing.
UNC GPA requirements to keep separate
A 2.000 cumulative UNC-Chapel Hill GPA is one of the University’s undergraduate academic eligibility standards. UNC also requires at least a 2.000 final cumulative GPA on UNC-Chapel Hill work for an undergraduate degree. Major and minor cores generally require a 2.000 UNC GPA as well, although individual programs can set higher requirements.
These thresholds serve different purposes. A calculator result can help with planning, but it does not determine academic standing, graduation clearance, financial-aid eligibility, or admission to a specific program.
How to calculate a target UNC GPA
Start with your current cumulative GPA and the number of UNC GPA-bearing credit hours behind it. Choose a target GPA and the number of future graded credits you expect to take. The calculator estimates the average grade points per credit you would need across those future credits.
If the required average is above 4.0, the target is not mathematically reachable within the number of credits entered. Adding more future credits can change what is possible.
UNC GPA calculator FAQs
Does UNC use a 4.0 GPA scale?
Yes. Standard undergraduate letter grades use a 4.0 scale with plus/minus values from A = 4.0 through D = 1.0, and F = 0.0.
Does an A+ give more than 4.0 at UNC?
The standard undergraduate grade-point table published by UNC lists A as the top letter grade at 4.0; it does not list A+ as a separate GPA value.
Does Pass/Fail affect my UNC GPA?
PS and LP do not enter the GPA. If the course is failed, the recorded F does enter the GPA at zero grade points.
Does an incomplete hurt my UNC GPA?
Temporarily, it can. UNC states that IN and AB carry the value of F and are used in semester and cumulative GPA calculations until a permanent grade is assigned. The GPA is recalculated after a qualifying grade change.
Does retaking a class replace the old grade at UNC?
No. For a repeated non-repeatable course, all attempts remain in the cumulative GPA. The degree-credit rule is separate from the GPA rule.
Do transfer grades count toward UNC GPA?
No. Grades earned at other institutions are excluded from the UNC-Chapel Hill GPA, although accepted transfer credit can still count toward degree progress.
What GPA do I need to graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill?
The University requires at least a 2.000 final cumulative GPA on work attempted at UNC-Chapel Hill, along with the other degree requirements. Majors, professional programs, and specific courses may have additional standards.
Is the graduate-school GPA calculated the same way?
Do not use this undergraduate profile for graduate or professional-school records. Those programs can use different grading systems and academic standards.
