University of Michigan GPA Calculator

Use this University of Michigan GPA calculator for standard Ann Arbor LSA undergraduate coursework on U-M's 4.0 scale. It calculates current or cumulative GPA, projects GPA with planned courses, and estimates the average needed for a target GPA while handling LSA's non-GPA marks and transfer rules. Repeated courses require separate review because LSA does not use simple grade replacement.

How U-M LSA Calculates GPA

LSA calculates GPA with Michigan Semester Hours (MSH) and Michigan Honor Points (MHP). Multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credits by its grade value, add the honor points, then divide by the total GPA-bearing semester hours.

Quick answer: A+ and A are both worth 4.0 at U-M LSA. An E is worth 0.0 and still affects GPA. Optional Pass/Fail grades P and F do not enter GPA.

GradeHonor points per credit
A+ / A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
D-0.7
E0.0

For example, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 honor points and a 4-credit B+ earns 13.2. Together, 25.2 honor points divided by 7 semester hours gives a 3.600 GPA.

Which Grades Count Toward GPA?

Standard letter grades A+ through E are GPA-bearing. LSA lists P, F, CR, NC, S, U, NR, I, Y, and VI among marks that do not enter GPA. This distinction matters because E, not F, is the ordinary zero-point failing grade in LSA’s letter system; F is used in Pass/Fail grading and is excluded from GPA.

An Incomplete is temporary. If an I in a graded course is not resolved by the applicable deadline, LSA says it can lapse to E, which then contributes zero honor points and affects GPA. For a Pass/Fail course, an unfinished I can lapse to F without entering GPA.

Transfer Courses and U-M Campus Courses

Grades from institutions outside the University of Michigan system do not transfer into the U-M Ann Arbor GPA, even when the credits are accepted. LSA makes an important exception for courses from UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint: those grades transfer and are included in the Ann Arbor GPA.

Important: Transfer-credit acceptance and GPA treatment are different questions. Use the external-transfer option only for coursework outside the U-M system; Dearborn and Flint courses have their own calculator option because their grades can count.

Repeated Courses Do Not Use Simple Grade Replacement

LSA keeps the earlier graded attempt in the GPA. What happens to the later attempt depends on the original grade: a repeat after A+ through C (or P/CR/S) is generally not for credit and earns no new honor points; a repeat after C- through D- can earn honor points without additional degree credit; and a repeat after E can earn honor points and credit if the later attempt is passed.

Because that policy is conditional, this calculator does not offer a one-click Repeat Impact estimate. Check the original grade and the transcript’s repeat/not-for-credit treatment before adding a repeated attempt to a GPA estimate.

Projected GPA and Target GPA

For a projected GPA, enter your current cumulative GPA and the Michigan Semester Hours already included in that GPA, then add planned courses with expected grades. The calculator combines the prior honor-point baseline with the planned GPA-bearing credits.

The target tool works backward from your current GPA. If the required future average is above 4.0, the target cannot be reached within the number of credits entered. A target estimate is planning math, not a determination of academic standing, graduation, honors, or financial-aid eligibility.

Academic Standing, Graduation, and Financial Aid

For LSA, a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 is required for good standing, and the college also requires at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA for the degree, with applicable major/minor GPA requirements. LSA’s current academic-standing system moves students below 2.0 through Academic Progress Notice stages and, after a third consecutive full term below 2.0, Academic Recess.

Financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is a separate policy. U-M currently lists a 2.0 cumulative GPA minimum for undergraduates, along with at least 67% completion of attempted credits and a maximum timeframe requirement. Do not use the GPA calculator alone to determine aid eligibility.

Fall 2027 LSA First-Semester Grade Covering

Beginning in Fall 2027, LSA says first-year students’ first-semester grades will be covered on the external transcript as P/NC and will not be reflected in GPA. Beginning with the second semester, subsequent grades will be recorded and reflected in GPA normally.

Calculator limitation: The current profile is for the standard LSA undergraduate GPA record. Fall 2027 and later first-year students should not enter covered first-semester grades as ordinary A–E GPA courses.

Graduate and Other U-M School Records

This calculator is intentionally scoped to Ann Arbor LSA undergraduates. Rackham graduate students use a separate academic context, including a 3.0 minimum cumulative Rackham GPA for satisfactory standing, and other U-M schools and professional programs can have their own grading, standing, and repeat rules.

If your home school is Engineering, Ross, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Law, Medicine, or another U-M unit, verify that unit’s rules rather than assuming every LSA exception applies to your record.

University of Michigan GPA FAQs

Is an A+ worth more than an A at the University of Michigan?

No. In LSA, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 honor points per credit. The maximum GPA on this scale is therefore 4.0.

Does a Pass/Fail F lower my U-M GPA?

No. Under LSA’s optional Pass/Fail system, both P and F are excluded from GPA. Do not confuse the Pass/Fail F with the standard letter-system E, which is worth 0.0 and does lower GPA.

Do transfer grades count in the University of Michigan GPA?

Usually not for outside institutions. LSA says external transfer grades do not affect the Ann Arbor GPA, but grades from UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint are an exception and are included.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade at U-M?

No. LSA keeps the earlier graded attempt in GPA, and the later attempt’s honor-point treatment depends on the grade earned the first time. That is why the calculator disables a simple replacement estimate.

What GPA is good standing in LSA?

A cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is good standing under LSA’s current academic-standing policy. Other requirements can apply to majors, programs, financial aid, or other U-M schools.

What GPA do I need to graduate from LSA?

LSA requires at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA, plus the applicable 2.00 major and minor GPA requirements. Completing the required credits and other degree requirements is also necessary.

What GPA is needed for LSA distinction in 2026?

For May, August, and December 2026 graduates, LSA publishes 3.993–4.000 for Highest Distinction, 3.955–3.992 for High Distinction, and 3.866–3.954 for Distinction. These ranges are based on class rank and are recalculated annually, so they should not be treated as permanent thresholds.

Will first-semester grades count for LSA first-year students in Fall 2027?

LSA says no. Beginning Fall 2027, first-year students’ first-semester grades will be covered as P/NC on the external transcript and excluded from GPA; later semesters return to normal GPA treatment.
