How GPA Works at UConn
Whether you’re in Storrs or one of UConn’s regional campuses, GPA at the University of Connecticut is calculated using the standard 4.0 scale. Every letter grade you earn corresponds to a numeric value, and these values are weighted by the number of credits for each course.
GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of GPA credits attempted. UConn uses this GPA both for academic standing and honors consideration.

Special Notes for GPA Calculation
- Repeated Courses: If you retake a course, both the original and the repeat grade will appear on your transcript, but only the most recent grade is factored into your GPA.
- Pass/Fail Option: UConn allows students to take certain electives on a pass/fail basis, but these courses do not count toward GPA.
- Dean’s List: You must earn at least a 3.0 semester GPA with a minimum of 12 GPA credits and no grade below a C to qualify.
Program and Faculty Variations
While UConn maintains a standard grading scale across the university, some professional schools and graduate programs may have stricter GPA expectations or grading adjustments. For example:
- School of Nursing: Requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 in prerequisite courses.
- School of Business: Uses GPA cutoffs for major admission (competitive entry).
- Graduate School: Considers a GPA of 3.0 as the minimum for good academic standing.
It’s best to check with your specific college or department for nuanced grading policies.
