UC Irvine GPA Calculator

Use this UC Irvine GPA calculator to estimate your undergraduate UC GPA on UCI's 4.0 scale, including current or cumulative GPA, planned-course projections, and target GPA planning. It follows UCI's official letter-grade values, excludes P/NP and unresolved non-GPA marks, and flags repeat and transfer situations that need special treatment.

How to Use the UC Irvine GPA Calculator

Enter your previous UC GPA and GPA-bearing quarter units if you want to continue from an existing cumulative record. Then add completed UCI courses with their quarter units and final grades. Open Planned Courses to see how future grades could change your GPA, or use the target tool to estimate the average you would need over a chosen number of future units.

Important: The calculator is designed for the standard undergraduate UC GPA. UCI graduate repeat rules differ, and PharmD H/F grading is not calculated through this standard profile.

If a repeated course is involved, use your official UC GPA baseline whenever possible. The calculator’s generic Repeat Impact tool is disabled because UCI’s replacement rule depends on how many repeated units you have already used.

UC Irvine GPA Scale

UCI assigns grade points per quarter unit on a 4.0 scale. An A+ is worth the same 4.0 points per unit as an A.

GradeGrade points per unit
A+, A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
D-0.7
F0.0

P, NP, S, U, NR, IP, and an unresolved I are excluded from the GPA calculation. A W also carries no grade points and is not calculated in the UC GPA. An unresolved I or NR can later become a permanent grade under UCI’s deadlines, so update the calculator when the transcript changes.

How UCI Calculates GPA

UCI multiplies each GPA-bearing course’s grade-point value by its quarter units, adds the grade points, and divides by the total GPA-bearing units.

GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing units

For example, a 4-unit A earns 16.0 grade points and a 4-unit B+ earns 13.2. Together, that is 29.2 grade points across 8 units, for a GPA of 3.650.

The calculator displays three decimal places for planning. Your official UC record remains the controlling source for your GPA.

Pass/Not Pass and Incomplete Grades

A P or NP does not enter the GPA. A P can earn course and unit credit under UCI rules, while an NP earns no unit credit, but neither changes the grade-point average.

An I is excluded while it remains unresolved. If the work is not completed within the applicable deadline, UCI can replace the I with F, NP, or U depending on the grading option; the calculator should then be updated to match the permanent transcript grade.

Repeating a Course at UCI

UCI undergraduates may repeat a course after receiving C-, D+, D, D-, F, or NP, subject to the University’s repeat rules. For the first 16 units of repeated work, only the most recently received grade and grade points are used in the GPA. After that allowance, additional repeat grades are included rather than automatically replacing every earlier attempt.

Calculator limitation: Repeat Impact is intentionally unavailable for UCI. A safe repeat calculation needs your prior repeated-unit history and, in some cases, School approval or transcript-specific treatment.

A course originally taken for a letter grade must be repeated for a letter grade. Repeating a course more than once requires approval from the student’s School, and graduate repeat rules use a different eight-unit framework.

Transfer Courses and the UC GPA

Non-UC transfer coursework can earn transferable units without adding the outside institution’s grades to your UC GPA. UCI’s Registrar states that only transferred credit from another UC campus is computed into the UC GPA.

In the calculator, use the other-UC course type only when the grade is actually part of your UC record/GPA. Use the non-UC transfer type for accepted outside credit that does not enter the UC GPA. Transfer-admission GPA is a separate admissions calculation and should not be substituted for your enrolled UCI GPA.

UCI GPA Requirements and Academic Standing

For a UCI bachelor’s degree, students need at least a 2.0 GPA overall, at least 2.0 in courses required for the major, and at least 2.0 in upper-division courses required for the major. Some honors programs can require higher averages.

Academic standing uses related but separate rules. Undergraduates are normally placed on academic notice when either the quarter GPA or cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. A quarter GPA below 1.5, or failure to recover after consecutive notice quarters, can make a student subject to disqualification after faculty review.

Financial-aid satisfactory academic progress is another separate standard. UCI’s undergraduate SAP policy includes a cumulative 2.0 GPA requirement at the annual spring review plus a 66.6% pace requirement, so a GPA calculator alone cannot determine aid eligibility.

Dean’s Honor List and Latin Honors

UCI’s Registrar records Dean’s Honor List recognition for undergraduates who complete at least 12 graded units in a quarter with a 3.500 or better quarterly GPA.

Latin honors are different: thresholds vary by School and academic year because they are based on graduating-class percentages. Check the current Registrar table for your graduation year rather than relying on an older fixed GPA cutoff.

Graduate and PharmD Students

Graduate students should not use the undergraduate repeat logic in this calculator. UCI’s graduate repeat allowance, satisfactory scholarship rules, and program standards differ from undergraduate rules.

PharmD courses also use H/F grading with a different transcript treatment. The standard undergraduate calculator routes that context to manual review instead of inventing a numerical conversion.

UC Irvine GPA FAQs

Is an A+ worth 4.3 at UC Irvine?

No. At UCI, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points per unit. The A+ does not raise the GPA scale above 4.0.

Does an NP lower my UCI GPA?

No. NP is excluded from the UC GPA, although it does not earn unit credit. That is different from an F, which earns zero grade points while its units remain in the GPA denominator.

Does a P affect my UCI GPA?

No. P is excluded from GPA. A passing P can still earn unit credit, subject to UCI’s P/NP rules and any School or major restrictions.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade at UCI?

Sometimes, but not without limits. Eligible deficient grades can be replaced in GPA computation for the first 16 units of repeated undergraduate work; additional repetitions are treated differently, and a second repeat requires School approval.

Do community college grades count in my UCI GPA?

Generally, accepted non-UC transfer work contributes transfer units rather than outside grades to the UC GPA. The Registrar specifically states that transferred credit from another UC campus is the transfer credit computed into the UC GPA.

What GPA do I need to graduate from UC Irvine?

The general bachelor’s-degree rule requires at least a 2.0 overall GPA, a 2.0 in courses required for the major, and a 2.0 in upper-division courses required for the major. Individual programs can have additional requirements.

What GPA puts an undergraduate on academic notice at UCI?

An undergraduate is normally subject to academic notice when the quarter GPA or cumulative GPA is below 2.0. Academic standing also considers satisfactory progress toward the degree.

What GPA is needed for UCI Latin honors?

There is no single permanent cutoff. UCI publishes School-specific thresholds by academic year based on graduating-class percentages, so use the Registrar’s current table for your graduation year.
