UChicago GPA Calculator

Use this UChicago GPA calculator for the University of Chicago College’s 4.0 quality-grade system. It estimates current or cumulative GPA, projects planned coursework, and works backward from a target GPA. It also reflects key College rules: P and W are excluded, F counts as 0.0, external transfer grades do not count, and both graded attempts of a repeated course stay in the GPA.

How to use the UChicago GPA calculator

Enter each College course using the units shown on your academic record and select the final grade. If you already have a cumulative GPA, add that GPA and the GPA-bearing units behind it, then enter only courses that are not already included in that baseline.

Use Planned Courses to estimate a future GPA. The target tool can estimate the average grade points you would need across a chosen number of future units. Results are planning estimates; your official record in myUChicago controls.

Calculator limitation: This profile is for College undergraduates. Graduate divisions and professional schools can use different grading rules. If a course follows another school’s grading system, verify how the final grade is recorded before using it here.

The College’s standard quality-grade scale does not use A+ as a regular undergraduate GPA grade. An F earns zero grade points and remains part of the GPA calculation even though it does not confer course credit.

How UChicago calculates GPA

For each GPA-bearing course, multiply the grade-point value by the course units. Add the grade-point totals and divide by the total GPA-bearing units.

Example: a 100-unit A contributes 400 grade-point units, while a 100-unit B contributes 300. Together, 700 ÷ 200 = 3.500.

P, W, unresolved I/NGR marks, and excluded external transfer work do not add grade points or GPA units in this calculator.

Pass/Fail, withdrawals, and incompletes

A P can confer course credit when the course and program allow it, but it is not calculated in the College GPA. If a student does not pass a P/F course, the F counts as 0.0 in GPA.

A W does not confer course credit and does not affect GPA, although withdrawals can matter for completion-rate and academic-standing rules. An I or NGR should not be converted into a guessed letter grade; wait for the final grade before including it numerically.

Repeated courses at UChicago

When a College student repeats a course, both grades are averaged into the GPA. The original grade is not replaced. Only one registration counts toward the total graduation credit for that course.

Because the calculator’s separate Repeat Impact feature is designed for grade replacement, it is disabled for UChicago. Enter the original attempt and the repeated attempt as separate completed rows if neither is already included in your prior-GPA baseline.

Transfer and study-abroad courses

Grades from courses taken at other institutions do not enter the official College GPA. Incoming approved transfer credit is recorded as credit rather than imported letter grades for GPA purposes.

Off-campus study-abroad or domestic-program grades generally do not enter the College GPA either, unless the course is listed on the transcript with a University of Chicago course number. For a UChicago-numbered course abroad, use the final UChicago transcript grade and units.

Academic standing and graduation GPA

These are different standards and should not be treated as one cutoff.

PurposeCurrent College rule
Good academic standingIn each Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarter, ordinarily complete 300 units on time with passing grades and earn at least a 2.0 quarter GPA.
Overall graduation GPAAt least 1.75 overall.
Declared major/minor GPAAt least 2.0 in each declared major and minor.

Academic review considers more than cumulative GPA alone, including timely course completion and the student’s quarter performance.

Dean’s List and College honors

UChicago’s Dean’s List is not based on one permanent GPA cutoff. Current College honors guidance places approximately the top 20% of eligible degree-seeking students on the list, subject to annual course and quality-grade requirements.

Likewise, summa cum laude is not a simple fixed calculator threshold. Current guidance uses the top 8% by major over a five-year comparison period and includes committee review of curricular breadth and depth.

Frequently asked questions

Does UChicago use a 4.0 GPA scale?

Yes. The College’s standard undergraduate quality grades run from A = 4.0 to F = 0.0, with plus/minus values between them.

Does UChicago have A+ grades?

The standard College undergraduate GPA scale does not list A+ as a regular quality grade. Some graduate or professional contexts can use different systems, so do not import another school’s scale into a College GPA calculation.

Does a P affect my UChicago GPA?

No. A P is excluded from GPA, although whether it satisfies a particular degree requirement depends on the course and program rules.

Does an F count in UChicago GPA?

Yes. F is worth 0.0 grade points and is included in the GPA denominator even though the course does not confer credit.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade?

No. For College students, both grades remain and both are averaged into GPA. The repeat normally counts only once toward graduation credit.

Do transfer grades count in UChicago GPA?

No. Grades from other institutions do not contribute to the official College GPA, even when transfer credit is approved.

What GPA do I need to stay in good academic standing?

The College ordinarily requires at least a 2.0 GPA for each Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarter plus 300 units completed on time with passing grades. Standing is therefore not determined by cumulative GPA alone.

What GPA do I need to graduate from UChicago?

Current College graduation guidance requires at least a 1.75 overall GPA and at least a 2.0 GPA in all declared majors and minors, along with the other degree requirements.
