How UCF calculates GPA
UCF calculates GPA from grade points and semester credit hours. Multiply each GPA-bearing course’s credit hours by the grade-point value, add the grade points, then divide by the GPA-bearing hours.
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | A- | 3.75 |
| B+ | 3.25 | B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.75 | C+ | 2.25 |
| C | 2.00 | C- | 1.75 |
| D+ | 1.25 | D | 1.00 |
| D- | 0.75 | F | 0.00 |
Important: UCF’s plus/minus values are not the common 3.7/3.3 pattern. For example, UCF uses 3.75 for A-, 3.25 for B+, 2.75 for B-, and 2.25 for C+.
Worked example
A 3-credit A earns 12 grade points. A 3-credit B+ earns 9.75. Together, that is 21.75 grade points across 6 GPA hours, for a 3.625 GPA.
Which UCF grades affect GPA?
| Grade or mark | GPA treatment |
|---|---|
| A through D- | Counts using UCF’s grade-point table |
| F | Counts as 0.00 points; hours remain in the GPA denominator |
| WF | Treated as a failing grade for GPA purposes |
| S | Excluded from GPA; credit is earned |
| U | Excluded from GPA; no course credit is earned |
| NC | Excluded from GPA |
| W / WP | Excluded from GPA |
| I | Temporary; use the final grade when resolved |
Under UCF’s current S/U policy, a C or higher converts to S and a C- or lower converts to U when the S/U option applies. Neither S nor U changes the GPA.
Incomplete warning: An unresolved I normally changes to F after the applicable one-year/graduation deadline. Do not enter an I as a zero-point F before that change actually occurs on the record.
How UCF Grade Forgiveness changes GPA
UCF Grade Forgiveness is not the same as simply retaking a class. For an approved Grade Forgiveness request, the second grade substitutes for the eligible original grade in the GPA calculation. The original grade must be C- or lower, the student must be enrolled in the second attempt, and the request must meet UCF’s deadline and eligibility rules.
The calculator’s Repeat Impact feature is therefore only an estimate for a Grade Forgiveness case that actually qualifies. It should not be used to assume every repeated course receives replacement treatment.
The second grade can lower your GPA. UCF’s Registrar describes Grade Forgiveness as substitution of the second grade for the previous grade; it is not limited to cases where the new grade is higher.
Transfer courses and your UCF GPA
Keep transfer and other external coursework separate from this calculator’s UCF-GPA estimate. UCF evaluates transferred coursework and uses a plus/minus system when calculating transfer-related GPA information, but transfer admission, financial-aid SAP, scholarships, and the institutional UCF GPA can use different course populations and rules.
If you are a transfer student, use the UCF record shown in myUCF and the specific GPA definition required for your purpose rather than combining every prior college grade into the UCF GPA field.
UCF GPA requirements students often confuse
A 2.0 UCF GPA is an important university-wide undergraduate benchmark: UCF advising states that a UCF GPA below 2.0 places an undergraduate student on academic probation, and current UCF degree pages list a 2.0 UCF GPA as a university minimum exit requirement. Individual majors can require higher grades or program GPAs.
Financial-aid SAP is a separate calculation. UCF’s current SAP policy requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate students, along with completion-ratio and maximum-time-frame requirements. Do not use a calculator result alone to decide aid eligibility.
Graduate students also have a separate Program GPA concept; UCF Graduate Studies states that a Program GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for good standing. This undergraduate calculator should not be substituted for a graduate Program GPA audit.
How to use the UCF GPA calculator
- Enter your previous UCF GPA and the GPA-bearing UCF hours behind that GPA if you want a cumulative estimate.
- Add completed UCF courses with their semester hours and posted grades.
- Add planned courses to see a projected GPA.
- Use the target tool to estimate the average needed across a chosen number of future hours.
- Use Repeat Impact only when you are modeling an eligible, approved UCF Grade Forgiveness situation.
UCF GPA FAQs
Is an A- a 3.7 at UCF?
No. UCF assigns 3.75 grade points to an A-. UCF also uses 3.25 for B+, 2.75 for B-, 2.25 for C+, 1.75 for C-, 1.25 for D+, and 0.75 for D-.
Does an S or U affect my UCF GPA?
No. Under UCF’s current S/U policy, neither S nor U affects GPA. An S earns course credit, while a U does not.
Does an NC hurt my UCF GPA?
NC does not add grade points or GPA hours, so it does not lower the GPA directly. It can still matter for earned-credit, prerequisite, degree-progress, or financial-aid purposes.
Does a WF count in UCF GPA?
Yes. UCF’s Registrar states that a WF is calculated as a failing grade in the GPA, while a WP does not affect GPA.
Can UCF Grade Forgiveness make my GPA worse?
Yes. Because the second grade substitutes for the eligible original grade when Grade Forgiveness is approved, a lower second grade can produce a lower GPA. Confirm your actual eligibility and application status with the Registrar.
Do transfer grades count in my UCF GPA?
Do not automatically mix them into the institutional UCF GPA. UCF separately evaluates transfer coursework and can calculate transfer/overall GPA information for specific purposes. Use the GPA definition shown for the decision you are making.
What GPA puts an undergraduate on academic probation at UCF?
UCF advising states that an undergraduate is placed on academic probation when the UCF GPA falls below 2.0. While on probation, term-GPA requirements also apply.
What GPA is required for UCF financial-aid SAP?
UCF’s current SAP policy lists a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate students, plus completion-ratio and maximum-time-frame standards.
