How to Use the Syracuse GPA Calculator

Enter your previous Syracuse GPA and GPA-bearing credits if you want a cumulative estimate, then add completed courses with their credits and final grades. You can also add planned courses to see a projected GPA or use the target tool to estimate the average needed over future credits.

Calculator limitation: Do not use the Repeat Impact tool for Syracuse. Repeat and flagging rules vary by undergraduate school or college, and the College of Law follows separate rules.

Syracuse University GPA Scale

Syracuse uses a 4.0 scale with plus/minus values. The standard undergraduate values used here are:

A Pass (P) does not add grade points to the GPA. Withdrawals, audits and other non-GPA administrative symbols are also excluded from the numerical calculation. An unresolved Incomplete can affect GPA as failing work until the final grade is posted, so update the calculator when the Incomplete is resolved. Syracuse has no A+, so an A at 4.000 is the highest grade. Undergraduate courses also have no D+ or D-; the D- grade is used only in the College of Law. The unit of credit at Syracuse is the semester hour, and most courses carry 3 credits.

How Syracuse Calculates GPA

The formula is straightforward:

GPA = total grade points ÷ GPA-bearing credits

For each graded course, multiply the course credits by the grade-point value. A 3-credit A earns 12.000 grade points, while a 3-credit B+ earns 9.999. Together, those courses produce 21.999 grade points over 6 credits. That works out to 3.6665, and because Syracuse drops the extra digits instead of rounding, the GPA is 3.666. Syracuse calculates GPA to three decimal places without rounding. Any digits after the third are dropped, so 3.6669 stays 3.666. The calculator does the same.

Do Transfer Grades Count in the Syracuse GPA?

No. Accepted transfer credits can apply toward your degree, but grades earned at another institution are not calculated in the Syracuse University GPA. Transfer work can still matter for degree progress and financial-aid pace, so do not treat “excluded from GPA” as “ignored everywhere.”

Syracuse Repeated Courses and Flagging

Syracuse repeat treatment is school/college-specific. Depending on your home school or college and the course, the GPA may use the higher grade, the most recent grade, or another flagging rule. Both attempts can remain visible on the transcript even when one is excluded from a GPA calculation.

Important: Check your home school or college’s current flagging rule before estimating a repeated course. The calculator intentionally does not automate this step.

When you flag a retake, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School, the School of Architecture, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the iSchool and the College of Professional Studies count the higher grade. The Whitman School and the Newhouse School count the most recent grade, and a course can be flagged only once. Both attempts must be Syracuse courses with the same subject and number, and both stay on your transcript.

Syracuse Academic Standing and Financial Aid GPA

A 2.0 cumulative GPA is part of Syracuse’s undergraduate financial-aid SAP standard, along with completing at least 67% of attempted credits and staying within the maximum timeframe. Your school or college may apply additional or different academic-standing requirements, so a calculator result by itself does not determine good standing.

For current Syracuse academic scholarships, students entering in Fall 2026 or later generally must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA along with SAP and full-time enrollment requirements. Students enrolled before Fall 2026 are covered by the prior 2.75 GPA rule.

Syracuse College of Law and Graduate Students

The standard undergraduate calculator should not be used as a substitute for a Syracuse Law GPA calculation. The College of Law publishes separate grading, repeat, graduation and honors rules, including a 2.50 cumulative Law GPA requirement for the J.D. degree.

Graduate students also have separate academic rules. Graduate financial-aid SAP uses a 2.8 cumulative GPA, and individual graduate programs may impose additional standards.

It can. Syracuse academic rules treat unresolved Incomplete work as failing for GPA calculation until the final grade is posted, so projections should be updated after the grade changes.

What GPA do I need for financial aid?

For undergraduate federal/University SAP, the cumulative GPA requirement is 2.0, together with a 67% completion pace and maximum-timeframe rule. Scholarships can have separate renewal requirements.

Is the College of Law GPA calculated the same way?

No. Syracuse Law has separate academic rules, including its own repeat treatment and degree GPA requirements, so Law students should use the College of Law rules for official planning.
