Syracuse uses a 4.0 scale with plus/minus values. The standard undergraduate values used here are:

A Pass (P) does not add grade points to the GPA. Withdrawals, audits and other non-GPA administrative symbols are also excluded from the numerical calculation. An unresolved Incomplete can affect GPA as failing work until the final grade is posted, so update the calculator when the Incomplete is resolved.

How Syracuse Calculates GPA

The formula is straightforward:

GPA = total grade points ÷ GPA-bearing credits

For each graded course, multiply the course credits by the grade-point value. A 3-credit A earns 12.000 grade points, while a 3-credit B+ earns 9.999. Together, those courses produce 21.999 grade points over 6 credits, or about a 3.667 GPA.

Do Transfer Grades Count in the Syracuse GPA?

No. Accepted transfer credits can apply toward your degree, but grades earned at another institution are not calculated in the Syracuse University GPA. Transfer work can still matter for degree progress and financial-aid pace, so do not treat “excluded from GPA” as “ignored everywhere.”

Repeated Courses and Flagging

Syracuse repeat treatment is school/college-specific. Depending on your home school or college and the course, the GPA may use the higher grade, the most recent grade, or another flagging rule. Both attempts can remain visible on the transcript even when one is excluded from a GPA calculation.

Academic Standing and Financial Aid

A 2.0 cumulative GPA is part of Syracuse’s undergraduate financial-aid SAP standard, along with completing at least 67% of attempted credits and staying within the maximum timeframe. Your school or college may apply additional or different academic-standing requirements, so a calculator result by itself does not determine good standing.

For current Syracuse academic scholarships, students entering in Fall 2026 or later generally must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA along with SAP and full-time enrollment requirements. Students enrolled before Fall 2026 are covered by the prior 2.75 GPA rule.

College of Law and Graduate Students

The standard undergraduate calculator should not be used as a substitute for a Syracuse Law GPA calculation. The College of Law publishes separate grading, repeat, graduation and honors rules, including a 2.50 cumulative Law GPA requirement for the J.D. degree.

Graduate students also have separate academic rules. Graduate financial-aid SAP uses a 2.8 cumulative GPA, and individual graduate programs may impose additional standards.
