How to use the Northwestern GPA calculator
Enter your previous cumulative GPA and the Northwestern course units behind that GPA if you want to extend an existing record. Then add completed courses with their units and final grades. You can also open Planned Courses to estimate how future grades would change your GPA or use the target tool to see the average needed over a chosen number of future units.
Important: This calculator is for the standard Evanston undergraduate record. Northwestern graduate grading treats incomplete grades differently, and school-specific major, graduation, standing, or aid rules may use additional requirements that a GPA calculator cannot decide.
Northwestern repeats do not use ordinary grade replacement. If you repeated a course and both attempts are part of your undergraduate GPA, enter both attempts as separate completed rows. The calculator’s replacement-style Repeat Impact tool is intentionally unavailable.
Northwestern GPA scale
Northwestern’s undergraduate GPA scale tops out at 4.0. There is no A+ grade point above 4.0 in the university undergraduate scale.
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
| X | 0.0 |
| Y | 0.0 |
For undergraduates, X means a missed final examination and Y means incomplete work. Both currently carry 0.0 grade points, so leaving an unresolved X or Y out of a GPA estimate can make the result look higher than the undergraduate record shown by Northwestern.
The notations P, N, K, S, U, W, and NR are ignored in the undergraduate GPA. They can still matter for credit, progress, or other academic rules, so “excluded from GPA” does not mean “has no academic effect.”
How Northwestern GPA is calculated
For the standard undergraduate record, multiply each course’s Northwestern units by the grade-point value, add the grade points, and divide by the GPA-bearing course units.
GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA-bearing Northwestern course units
A 1-unit A earns 4.0 grade points and a 1-unit B+ earns 3.3. Together, those courses produce 7.3 grade points over 2 units, for a GPA of 3.65.
Northwestern normally awards 1.0 unit for a quarter-long undergraduate course, but some courses carry other unit values. Enter the Northwestern units shown for the course rather than converting them to semester hours.
What happens when you repeat a course?
Northwestern keeps all attempts on the record and uses all of their grades in the cumulative GPA when a course designed to be taken once is repeated. Credit is ordinarily awarded only once, following the attempt with the highest grade.
Repeat example: If a 1-unit course was first completed with an F and later with an A, the GPA calculation includes both the 0.0-point F attempt and the 4.0-point A attempt. The A does not erase the F from the cumulative GPA.
Because the shared calculator’s Repeat Impact tool models grade replacement, it is disabled for Northwestern. Enter each counted attempt as a separate completed course instead.
Do transfer and study abroad grades count?
Ordinary external transfer credit does not bring the outside grade into the Northwestern GPA. Accepted external work is generally reflected with a T rather than the original grade.
Study abroad depends on the credit type. Northwestern direct-credit courses, including courses with Northwestern numbers and an -SA designation, appear with Northwestern letter grades and count in term and cumulative GPA. Transfer-credit study abroad grades do not enter the Northwestern GPA.
Courses transferred from another Northwestern career can be different: accepted courses may retain their earlier Northwestern grades and count in the Evanston undergraduate GPA. The calculator sends that case to manual review because the posted record should be confirmed first.
GPA rules that depend on your school or purpose
A GPA number can be used differently depending on what you are checking. Northwestern’s general academic-standing policy considers more than one trigger, and each undergraduate school can impose additional conditions. A cumulative record below a C average is one ordinary probation trigger for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, but it is not the only factor.
For undergraduate financial-aid satisfactory academic progress, the university publishes a 2.0 cumulative GPA requirement along with completion-rate and maximum-timeframe rules. Transfer credits can affect aid pace even though transfer grades do not affect the Northwestern GPA.
Graduation and program requirements also vary. For example, Weinberg and McCormick publish 2.0 degree-level GPA requirements, while Medill distinguishes journalism and nonjournalism GPA requirements. Use your own school’s current degree audit and advising rules rather than treating one threshold as universal across Northwestern.
Northwestern Latin honors
Northwestern does not publish one permanent GPA cutoff for summa, magna, or cum laude. School Latin honors are based on class rank within each undergraduate school: the highest 5% receive summa cum laude, the next 8% magna cum laude, and the next 12% cum laude. The GPA cutoffs therefore change with the graduating class.
Undergraduate vs. graduate GPA
The standard letter-grade point values look similar across undergraduate and graduate records, but the treatment of incompletes is materially different. In the undergraduate catalog, X and Y carry 0.0 grade points. The Graduate School lists X, Y, and PY among notations ignored in the graduate GPA and separately requires graduate students to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Do not use the undergraduate X/Y logic in this calculator for a Northwestern graduate record.
Northwestern GPA FAQs
Does Northwestern use a 4.0 GPA scale?
Yes. The standard undergraduate scale runs from A = 4.0 through F = 0.0, with plus/minus values for A- through C-. Northwestern does not assign an A+ value above 4.0 on this scale.
Does an F count in Northwestern GPA?
Yes. An undergraduate F is worth 0.0 grade points and remains part of the GPA calculation with its GPA-bearing course units.
Do X and Y grades hurt an undergraduate Northwestern GPA?
While unresolved, yes: the undergraduate catalog assigns both X and Y 0.0 grade points. They can later be changed to final grades under Northwestern’s incomplete-coursework rules.
Does a P affect Northwestern GPA?
No. P is ignored in the GPA, although the course can still matter for credit and degree requirements. P/N eligibility and how a P can be used toward requirements vary by school.
Does retaking a class replace the old grade at Northwestern?
No. For courses designed to be taken once, all attempts remain on the record and all grades are used in the cumulative GPA. Credit is normally awarded once.
Do transfer grades count in Northwestern GPA?
Ordinary external transfer grades do not. Accepted external credit is generally recorded with T and the outside grade is not used in the Northwestern GPA. Courses transferred from another Northwestern career can require separate review.
Do study abroad grades count in Northwestern GPA?
Northwestern direct-credit study abroad grades count; transfer-credit study abroad grades do not. Check whether your program awards Northwestern direct credit or transfer credit before entering the courses.
What GPA do I need to stay off academic probation?
There is not one universal automatic GPA test. Northwestern’s general policy lists several probation triggers, including a cumulative record below a C average for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and individual schools can add conditions. Review your school’s current academic-standing rules for an official decision.
What GPA is required for Northwestern financial aid SAP?
The undergraduate financial-aid policy requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, plus separate completion-rate and maximum-timeframe requirements. A GPA calculator alone cannot determine SAP eligibility.
What GPA do I need for Latin honors at Northwestern?
There is no fixed published cutoff in advance. Latin honors are percentile-based within each undergraduate school: top 5% summa, next 8% magna, and next 12% cum laude.
